Friday List: The First Crush is the Deepest

No one rocks a painter's cap like Shaun Cassidy.

I must have been about six years old when I taped that Shaun Cassidy poster to the wall. Thirty years later, I can't quite remember how the poster or Cassidy's perky little album -- the unoriginal "Da Doo Ron Ron" -- came into my possession. I only remember moving my Bionic Woman poster to the inside of my closet door, so it would be the eyes of Cassidy staring down at me from the wall alongside my bed as I drifted to sleep each night. Before long, Cassidy inspired my first act of rebellion -- I defaced the wall surrounding the poster with cartoon bubbles reading "I love you, Liz" and "I love you, too, Shawn." Barbie and Ken were recast as Shaun and me and soon both sported mini satin jackets and went roller skating with Parker Stevenson, Leif Garrett, Cheryl Ladd, Olivia Newton John -- you know, the gang.

Why the wistful, tender reminiscenses? Because Shaun Cassidy -- one-time "Hardy Boy" and full-time teen heart throb -- was my first celebrity crush. Soon enough, he was supplanted by a succession of pretty boys -- Shaun's older, wilder brother David Cassidy, Peter Frampton, Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, Simon Le Bon, John Stamos, Jason Bateman, Eric Stolz, Ad Rock, etc...

But, you know what they say: you never forget your first time. And there was just something about that sandy, feathered hair, winning grin and unremarkable vanilla singing that had me begging mom for the latest issues of Tiger Beat. See for yourself.

Now that I've embarassed myself, it's your turn. Who was your first celebrity crush? How old were you? What was it about the object of your affection that got you going? C'mon, let it all out. It's freeing.

Kirk Cameron was definitely among the first. The curly hair, the playful smile, the bad-boy but good guy persona. Siiiiiigh

Posted by: sjcpeach | January 11, 2008 12:40 PM

David Bowie. I still have a crush on him. My sister's crush is funnier - she had a crush on Tommy Shaw (circa Styx). "Tommy Shaw Forever" is still written on the drywall in our parent's garage.

Posted by: RiverCityRoller | January 11, 2008 12:40 PM

Well, I did have that thing for Han Solo.... But if you're talking about a guy who motivated me to hang up posters and by Tiger Beat, that would be The New Kids on The Block. I fluctated between which one. Shameful, I know! Looking back, I can't see what I saw in them. Thankfully, I came to my senses in mid-teenage years and switched over to the tattooed bad boys of heavy metal. Better music, anyway.

Ah, the folly of youth.

Posted by: DC Cubefarm | January 11, 2008 12:46 PM

Do you mean other than the always popular Richie vs. Fonzie debate? I could never decide which one of them I wanted to date, but seemed to lean slightly towards Richie.

My first celebrity (as opposed to character) crush was on Michael J. Fox. He could generate the 1.21 gigawatts all on his own as far as I was concerned.

Posted by: akmitc | January 11, 2008 12:46 PM

John Schneider - in full on Bo Duke/Dukes of Hazzard glory. I think I was twelve. The first, last and only time I ever bought a Tiger Beat.

Posted by: Kentucky girl | January 11, 2008 12:50 PM

Heather Thomas. One day when I was 12, I saw her poster for sale at the drug store, her clad in a pink bikini with one thumb playfully pulling at the strap. The next day I had to start shaving.

Posted by: Xopher | January 11, 2008 12:51 PM

Scott Baio - he was on Happy Days (Happydaze? It's all starting to make sense!) at that time and Joanie never loved Chachi as much as I did. I must have been about 5 or 6, and I though he was the cutest cutie that ever was, even though all my older cousins made relentless fun of me. I held that crush for a long, long time too - it was still going strong when "Charles" was "in charge."

Posted by: sunnydaze | January 11, 2008 12:51 PM

OMG, Liz. I had a Shaun Cassidy jacket. Picture this, white satin sleeves, powder blue for the rest, my name stiched in cursive on the left, and Shaun Cassidy's face ironed on to the back. I was the bomb at the 5th grade mixer.

Posted by: no name | January 11, 2008 12:52 PM

Sean Cassidy and Leif Garret were my first crushes. Later, Joe Montana and Bruce Penhall (last season of CHIPS). I apparently have a thing for shaggy-haired blonds. Which if you could see who is sitting across from me at lunch, you would realize has not changed.

Posted by: ep | January 11, 2008 12:56 PM

The first celebrity crush I remember is from sixth grade...Michael Jackson. Yes, I know, sounds insane now, but it was the heyday of "Thriller," and he didn't seem weird them -- just cute.

My brother used to drive me crazy with Eddie Murphy's "Delirious" routine about Michael Jackson: "Tito, give me a tissue. Jermaine, stop teasing!" How prescient Eddie was.

Posted by: KLeewrite | January 11, 2008 1:01 PM

Rick Springfield, anyone?

Posted by: SSMD | January 11, 2008 1:01 PM

He wasn't exactly A-list, but I had a ridonkulous crush on Corey Hart, singer of such earth-shattering, paradigm-shifting hits as "I Wear My Sunglasses at Night" and "Never Surrender."

Also had a big, stupid crush on Corey Haim in the late '80s. Thank God my taste later improved by leaps and bounds. But hey, at the time, he was adorable and somewhat coherent.

Posted by: musicgeek | January 11, 2008 1:01 PM

Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys. Not only was he a hunk, and the only one in the group who actually surfed, but he wrote these creamy dreamy love songs like "Cuddle Up" and "Only With You" and "Forever." He dated Christine McVie for a while, and I hated hated HATED her for it!!

Posted by: Margo | January 11, 2008 1:01 PM

Please tell me I was not the only John Ritter girl out there. I watched "Three's Company" religiously every week.

Why?

Funny? Cute? Willing to make a fool of himself? Who knows--but I had it bad.

Posted by: debit | January 11, 2008 1:04 PM

Cheryl Tiegs. There were two posters: one of her in this pink string bikini, where she had her index finger down between the waistband and her skin... and another from SPORTS ILLUSTRATED of her in a see-through white mesh tank suit. Somehow both of them passed the censors in my house.

I remember looking at those posters and thinking "OK, she was born in 1947... I was born in 1964... that's only 17 years difference... that's not much... in ten years I'll be 23 and she'll still be only 40..."

Posted by: Max | January 11, 2008 1:06 PM

Rick Springfield TOTALLY! Although I did have a little crush on Danny Kaye when I was 6 - loved that Hans Christian Anderson.

Posted by: Alison in TN | January 11, 2008 1:06 PM

I had a couple...Michael J. Fox (and probably still!), Jason Bateman (actually wrote to him) when he was doing the Hogan Family/Valerie/Valerie's Family stuff, Ricky Shroeder (ironically a young Jason Bateman played Ricky's "bad" friend), both guys from CHiPs and Dukes of Hazard -- yes, I'm totally an 80's child. And I'll throw in Chad Allen and Neil Patrick Harris since they weren't "out" in the 80's.

If we upped it to Olympians and other sports figures -- Dan Jansen (wrote to him, too), Paul Wylie, and Derek Jeter (yes, that's a present "crush")...

Posted by: WDC 21113 | January 11, 2008 1:07 PM

I too felt that I could have loved Chachi more, and perhaps better, than Joanie.

But my more serious crushes were always on musicians...Bono, Joe Elliot (lead singer from Def Leppard) come to mind. So I really can appreciate the "Tommy Shaw Forever" situation...that's classic.

Posted by: jcm | January 11, 2008 1:08 PM

Liz,

Shaun Cassidy was my first crush as well. My other big preteen crush was Scott Baio.

My first teenage crush (well, almost teenage) was Rick Springfield. I remember hanging out with my friends during the summer, watching GH so we could see who Dr. Drake was going to kiss next!

Posted by: TEL | January 11, 2008 1:09 PM

My first crush was Mickey Dolenz from the Monkees, when I was five or six and the show was in syndication. I liked that he was the funny one.

The next big crush was Christoper Reeve, after I saw Superman. I cannot tell you how many bad movies I saw just because Christopher Reeve was in them. Sigh.

Posted by: Arlington | January 11, 2008 1:10 PM

i was one huge JTT (Jonathan Taylor Thomas for those of you over 12) fan. I never missed an episode of Home Improvement and when he came on the screen I would just swoon. My crush later progressed to Devon Sawa (er, why?) but today is keeping happy company with the likes of Orland Bloom and Hugh Jackman.

Posted by: melissamac1 | January 11, 2008 1:10 PM

PAUL MCARTNEY

Posted by: LAUGHING | January 11, 2008 1:11 PM

I'm pretty positive that my first celeb crush was Debbie Gibson. And it was more her voice & songs than anything...we didn't have cable (no MTV) but you heard "Only In My Dreams" on the radio all the time. I *still* remember daydreaming about meeting her, and sitting in my mom's car listening to the Electric Youth tape because my grandmother didn't have a tape player.

Posted by: 23112 | January 11, 2008 1:15 PM

Liz Kelly I too had my first crush on Shaun Cassidy. I got so much teasing from older sibs over it. I feel vindicated knowing what a wonderfully twisted mind he 'grew into'. Does anyone remember a show staring Gary Cole called 'American Gothic'? It only last about a season or so (critical darling, ratings challenged), that wonderful show was brought to us by our very own Shaun Cassidy!

Posted by: jes | January 11, 2008 1:15 PM

Hee, hee - I love this topic! Just when I was pondering whether Henry Thomas (Eliot from ET) or Ricky Schroeder was my first, I started reading the posts and was lulled into dreamy-land. Rick Springfield was up there. Michael Jackson too. John Schneider as well, with my Dukes of Hazzard sparkly iron-on decal of him on a t-shirt.

I do know the Simon Le Bon crush has lasted the longest - I still think he's smoking and would shag him in a sec!

Posted by: vjl | January 11, 2008 1:16 PM

my silliest crush however would have to involve an old cartoon show i remember watching in grade school...G-Force. Loved that lead guy...can't remember his name. I'm sure he's still fighting the bad guys somewhere.

Posted by: jcm | January 11, 2008 1:16 PM

I have chosen to remain anonymous because I'm a regular poster and I don't want anyone to know that my first celebrity crush was Donny Osmond. I feel like such a dork.

Posted by: | January 11, 2008 1:17 PM

Showing my age (and my same sex preferences) with my first crush - Bobby Sherman...One of those where are they now shows featured him as an EMT in California - still looking great.

Posted by: mitchnrva | January 11, 2008 1:18 PM

Aidan Quinn. Crushed on him from the first time I saw him in "An Early Frost." And, more than twenty years later, I crush on him still...true "love" lasts a lifetime.

Posted by: | January 11, 2008 1:19 PM

if i can admit i liked a cartoon, admitting to Donny isn't so bad. he was a pretty big deal back then. it would be admitting you had a crush on jimmy osmond that might cause problems.

Posted by: jcm | January 11, 2008 1:19 PM

Darnit, someone beat me to David Bowie, but my crush was born specifically from his role in "Labyrinth" and I've had a thing for guys with long hair and tight pants ever since...

Posted by: Kat | January 11, 2008 1:20 PM

Les McKeown of the Bay City Rollers!

Posted by: LeDroit Park | January 11, 2008 1:20 PM

Hey Laughing... you too, huh?? I wasn't old enough to catch the Beatles first time around but Paul was IT for me. I bought every 45 and wore them all out. Loved the album with the picture of him with the beard and the little baby's face peeking out from under his coat... he was all wooly. What wasn't to love???

So funny, I remember saying to a friend of mine "I love Paul but too bad he's married" and she said "Rock stars sleep around." Like we really thought we might have a CHANCE... if we could just MEET him... MAYBE he'd like us BETTER than Linda!

Posted by: Christy | January 11, 2008 1:21 PM

I think my two crushes developed at roughly the same time . . . .

Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Danny Zuko (John Travolta) were my boyfriends - I really think the crushes were on the characters cause I wasn't really into Saturday Night Fever. Had the poster of Danny (with that adorable dimple in his chin) and a framed puzzle (oh, yeah, big dork) of Luke.

Posted by: librarygal | January 11, 2008 1:21 PM

Valerie Bertinelli. She was so cute and perky.

Posted by: yellojkt | January 11, 2008 1:22 PM

Oh no--am I the only one on the chat old enough to have a first crush on Peter Noonan? The hair, the accent...yum. I was at the Rock and ROll Hall of Fame over Christmas and got all tingly again when I got to their part of the exhibit.

Posted by: DC | January 11, 2008 1:25 PM

I am almost embarrassed to admit it now, but it was Glen Campbell.

My dad took me and the girl next door to see him in concert when we were about 12-13, it was my first concert, too.

I also second Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees. I still have all my Monkee albums, with the hearts and flowers and endearments I wrote to them on the margins.

Posted by: CJB | January 11, 2008 1:25 PM

Sean Astin, circa Goonies. How embarrassing is that?

Posted by: anonymous | January 11, 2008 1:28 PM

I think Michael Hutchence was the first crush I can remember. super cute. poor michael.
Lots of 80's rock guys. Yep, I watched too much MTV in my formative years.

Posted by: kb | January 11, 2008 1:29 PM

Marsha Brady a/k/a Maureen McGovern

Those way-short skirts, tight sweaters and grown-up girl shoes really got me going!

Posted by: niceFLguy | January 11, 2008 1:30 PM

You and my daughter are about the same age, and reading what you wrote was like being in a time warp! Ah, yes, it was Shaun forever, even though her two older brothers mocked her musical tastes. THEN she discovered Duran Duran, and poor Shaun was relegated to the sidelines. Did you have a Shaun Cassidy t-shirt? I'm pretty sure she did, and I vividly remember the Duran Duran one because it was washed to the point of being nearly see-through. How about "The Outsiders"? She and her girlfriends each had t-shirts printed up with character names on the back...you know, Ponyboy, Soda, Dally, Johnny. They debuted these at my daughter's birthday party, and because she was the birthday girl, she received the "Johnny" shirt. One of her girlfriends spent much of the party in the bathroom crying because the other girls made her be the girl in the movie, Cherry!

Posted by: jvs331 | January 11, 2008 1:30 PM

Bet nobody else has Ricky Nelson (before he became Rick Nelson and started playing his guitar) as their first crush. He was such a cute 12 year-old back in 1952. I can still hear his voice and see those long eyelashes. Those were the days! (And I was 10 and it was all in black and white.)

Posted by: OB | January 11, 2008 1:32 PM

Jon Knight (Jordan's older brother) from New Kids on the Block.

Keanu Reeves wasn't far behind in posters on my wall

Posted by: mortified | January 11, 2008 1:32 PM

Oh - I am excited to see another Chad Allen fan. I loved him on Our House (and hated Shannen Doherty already!) and continued to love him on Dr. Quinn. He really did a lot of morality shows, now that I think about it. I have to admit I was somewhat devastated when he came out a few years back, having loved him since I was 9 - I guess I still had some youthful hope!

Posted by: LitMajor | January 11, 2008 1:33 PM

My first: Kristy McNichol. My god, I was smitten. And I was the only person in the world who would adequately love and adore her.

Mary Lou Retton came next. 1984 marked a new era in depths of my affection. I actually sent her a letter.

Posted by: Phil | January 11, 2008 1:37 PM

Hey FL Guy -- Maureen McCormick was Marcia Brady!

Posted by: WDC 21113 | January 11, 2008 1:37 PM

I had a few crushes - both my most memorable were Johnny Depp - still have on him - was obsessed with 21st jump street and Neil Patrick Harris - aka Doogie. I was watching harold and kumar and when I saw him, I screamed out Doogie - haven't lived that one down and don't think my friends will forgot.

Posted by: chrismcc | January 11, 2008 1:38 PM

One and only childhood crush was Cal Ripken, Jr. So I never bought Tiger Beat, just baseball and sports mags. Funny thing is, now I couldn't care less about sports at all, much less baseball or any specific players.

I had friends in 5th grade with the Shaun Cassidy crush and just didn't get it (then or now).

Posted by: formerO'sfan | January 11, 2008 1:38 PM

Aylssa Milano and Catherine Bach.

Posted by: M Street | January 11, 2008 1:38 PM

"...David Cassidy, Peter Frampton, Han Solo and Luke Skywalker, Simon Le Bon, John Stamos, Jason Bateman, Eric Stolz, Ad Rock..."

Geez, Liz... that was some menage et neuf you had going on up in your room. I hope you remembered to lock the door.

Posted by: niceFLguy | January 11, 2008 1:38 PM

When I was 5 I just KNEW I was gonna marry either Speed Racer or Donny Osmond! I was even gonna convert for Donny. David Cassidy was up there too for a while but for some reason my 5 year old brain said I can't love BOTH Donny & David so Donny won.

Yet I never plastered my room with Donny or Speed.

That particular glory was reserved for Leif Garrett. I still have all his albums & a few of the posters. Same for Donny, I've even got the 8-tracks somewhere too.

And yes, I admit to owning one of those satin jackets too. It was baby blue with rainbow cuffs, collar & the bottom trim. But sadly it got stolen out of my locker in 7th grade. They tore down all my Leif Garret pictures too.

Years later I found out that this scummy girl named Shelby that rode my bus stole it cause I saw her wearing it. Yes, 15 years later she was still wearing my stolen baby blue satin jacket. I wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not. Yes she could still fit into it but it was soooo outta style & filthy. Yet, I still recognized my favourite, old jacket.

Then I bought "Women & Children First" & saw that poster of David Lee Roth chained to a fence & that was all she wrote for my "teenybopper" phase.

My voice dropped an octave, I got boobs & went through puberty all during one listen of "Women & Children First."

Leif was replaced by Roth & Co. & also Freddie Mercury & Queen, then Steve Perry & Journey showed up next to him with Jim Morrison gracing the back of my door.

That was the beginning of my love for all things metal & hair metal. I'd still have a room devoted to Jon Bon Jovi if I had my way & no husband.

Wouldn't that be lovely though? A room of wall-to-wall Jon Bon Jovi, it would be my very happy placed!!

Posted by: Bored @ home | January 11, 2008 1:40 PM

Love Bon Jovi too - he is more like my obsession than crush!

Posted by: chrismcc | January 11, 2008 1:44 PM

Can't believe I'm the first to post.....
John Travolta from Kotter days

Posted by: SS MD | January 11, 2008 1:44 PM

I was 10 and saw the BBC miniseries Jane Eyre with Timothy Dalton as Rochester. He was so dreamy... I know, pretty dorky but it's a great miniseries and I am a closet dork!

Posted by: Alina | January 11, 2008 1:46 PM

"I'd still have a room devoted to Jon Bon Jovi if I had my way & no husband."

Oddly, so would Jon.

Posted by: | January 11, 2008 1:47 PM

I secretly crushed on Shaun Cassidy but Best Friend called dibs first so I was relagated to Parker Stevenson. I did follow Shaun to a short-lived gothic series he produced called American Gothic. I thought it eerie that Joey Hardy had such a dark side.

I also crushed on Bruce Boxleitner, Randy Mantooth, and Bobby Goldsboro over Robby Benson. Sigh. I'm old.

Posted by: Delurker | January 11, 2008 1:47 PM

Hmmm, I can't remember early, early crushes, but I can remember when I was 16 or 17 that I had this picture taped to my mirror, and it went with me to college as well until too many tapings/untapings destroyed it:

http://static.userland.com/images/anand/EricHeiden.jpg

As the blogger who posted this picture put it:

"Well, Dr. Heiden, I had this AmEx ad inside my medicine cabinet for years. Whatever this is promoting, I'll take it. If it's possible, I'd like it delivered by bicycle (in your 7-Eleven jersey)."

Posted by: Chasmosaur | January 11, 2008 1:47 PM

Barry Manilow. He was elbowed out by Sting sometime in the 80's. Sting was elbowed out by Rob Morrow in the 90's (and by a guy who sorta kinda looked like him if the light was just right...)

Posted by: slvrspring | January 11, 2008 1:49 PM

Sad as it is, I was a late bloomer in becoming interested in the opposite sex so my first crush was actually Britney Spears when I was in 8th grade. Man does that fact make me feel like an idiot now. She was just too damn attractive in her music videos back then. Now just a picture of her can make me lose my lunch.

Posted by: | January 11, 2008 1:49 PM

My first crush was Mark Hamill, circa 1980, via "The Empire Strikes Back." I was ten years old. He was on the cover of People Magazine at one point--I was so excited to get it. He was just plain cute.

Posted by: 80s teen | January 11, 2008 1:50 PM

Shaun Cassidy! I was so excited to see your post, b/c I'm the only person I know who crushed on him. I was 5 or 6. Wrote him a little love letter and everything (which my Mom recently dug up - hilarious)...

Posted by: logan | January 11, 2008 1:51 PM

Wow, this takes me back. It's hard to remember exactly who was the very first crush, but I remember distinctly having a poster of the 6 million dollar man on my wall, and just thinking he was the coolest and wasn't the Bionic woman so lucky? I also loved John Schneider of the Duke Boys, and Donny Osmond, and Andy Gibb--remember Solid Gold? But then came Christopher Reeve. When Superman came out, I went to see it at the theater 5 times!! And after that, I saw everything he was in, even somewhere in time with Jane Seymour and Death Trap with Michael Caine. After him, there was Andrew McCarthy. He was dreamy.
They don't make teen idols like they used to.

Then there were all the guys in the Outsiders, but my favorite of the group had to be C. Thomas Howell, a fave on the cover of Tiger Beat. Saw everything he was ever in at the movie theater as well. Then I graduated to

Posted by: Stephanie | January 11, 2008 1:54 PM

Yup, Luke Skywalker, until I was old enough for Rick Springfield on General Hospital :)

Posted by: kvs | January 11, 2008 1:56 PM

Thanks Delurker!

I completely forgot about Randolph Mantooth. I had a crush on him way before Shaun Cassidy. My cousin and I used to tell our parents how we HAD to watch "Emergency 911" because we "learned things" (hey, we knew that BP meant blood pressure. We didn't know what blood pressure was, but that didn't matter). We were more excited seeing the paramedic van at the Universal studios tour than anything else.

Laughing!

Christian Bale- with his Newsies premiere

Posted by: Liz D | January 11, 2008 2:02 PM

Raquel Welch a la 'One Million Years B.C.'

Posted by: omni | January 11, 2008 2:03 PM

Ricky Schroeder was definitely my first-I was in kindergarten. Later on, I had posters of Michael J. Fox, Ethan Hawke (before he was a jerk), and Balthazar Getty when "Lord of the Flies" came out.

Posted by: jillster85 | January 11, 2008 2:15 PM

I can't believe I nearly made it through the entire blog before seeing any mention of Andy Gibb! TOTALLY in love . . . pictures everywhere, first live concert (and I cried).

Fast forward 10 years. My dad actually called me at college to tell me the "bad news" that Andy had died. I obviously had almost completely forgotten about AG at that point, but thought it was hysterical that my dad felt so moved to call and give me the news.

Posted by: LOL | January 11, 2008 2:16 PM

My worst-ever crush involved a 22-year-old Korean babe named Soon-Yi. Man, she was all I could think about. Which isn't so bad, apart from the fact that I was a 57-year-old Jewish comedian and filmmaker at the time.

Did I mention that my then-girlfriend had adopted Soon-Yi when she was eight years old? And that we had been living under the same roof together, since Soon-Yi was 10? Sometimes I forget to mention that part.

But I'm happy to say it all turned out fine. I dumped my uptight girlfriend in 1992, moved in with my little lotus flower and we were married five years later. We've since adopted two kids of our own. What's a 35-year age difference, when you're in love?

Posted by: Woody | January 11, 2008 2:17 PM

Yay! I'm so excited two other people said Scott Baio...I would never have admitted it otherwise, especially since he is super pervy and gross on his VH1 show. I liked him during the Charles and Charge years. Then came the 90210 years and I replaced him for Luke Perry and Jason Priestly.

Posted by: Marie | January 11, 2008 2:24 PM

D.B. Sweeney -- you know, the guy from The Cutting Edge. Loved him! :)

Posted by: Alexandria | January 11, 2008 2:25 PM

Looks like we have similar taste. My first celeb crush was DAVID Cassidy!

Posted by: Gaithersburg Girl | January 11, 2008 2:28 PM

Rick Springfield, Tom Selleck, and Christopher Reeve. My BF and I were just chatting online about this and we remembered that we also had the cast of "Silver Spoons" covered between Rick Schroeder (me) and Alfonso Ribiero (pre-Fresh Prince).

Posted by: Amy in LoCo | January 11, 2008 2:31 PM

Olivia Newton-John. I even went to see Xanadu.

Though I do recall those Cheryl Tiegs posters as well...

Posted by: SonofCarl | January 11, 2008 2:31 PM

OMG -- Randolph Mantooth!! I had completely forgotten about that dreamy paramedic. Thanks, Delurker. Yes, he was my first.

LOL: I am also surprised Andy Gibb hasn't been mentioned yet. I would have to include him as well as Detroit Tigers pitcher - Mark "The Bird" Fidrych.

Boy, talk about embarassing....

Posted by: another Liz | January 11, 2008 2:34 PM

Where to start? David Bowie/Ziggy Stardust was one of the first, but that was more of a fascination (no pun intended). True love didn't come my way until Andy Gibb. I fell hard and was sure that were destined to be together. So sad. Then came Rick Springfield, John Stamos, Matt Dillon (Outsiders-era), and Jon Bon Jovi. I'm happy to report that I'd still hit any one of them. Well, except Andy. :(

Posted by: Juicy | January 11, 2008 2:35 PM

This dates me considerably, but Jordan Knight was the first person I ever had confusing, exciting feelings over. Sigh...

Posted by: DJ | January 11, 2008 2:37 PM

Bobby Sherman! My mom had the BIGGEST crush on him! She still has the record with the fold out cover of Bobby in a lovely denimn ensamble laying down in the grass. In fact, my little sister and I were going through some of her albums at Christmas and my mom nearly had a heart attack when she saw that. Then she put it on and we got to listen to "Hey little woman please make up your mind" all night long. No Bing Cosby for us, it was Bobby Sherman all the time.

Posted by: melissamac1 | January 11, 2008 2:39 PM

Randy Mantooth- Paramedic John Gage on 'Emergency!'. I was six and I just loved those brown eyes and the confindent air of man in uniform saving lives. At the same time I had a crash on Carl Sagan presenter for 'Comos' and Spock. I was a weird kid! Actually I am still weird because I still can see what I found so crush worthy about them, even now.

Another vote for Bobby Sherman ... I was 8 or 9, and "Here Come the Brides" was my favorite show.

Posted by: PhillyGirl | January 11, 2008 2:49 PM

First ever was Brett Hudson of the Hudson Brothers, followed by Randolph Mantooth, and then Luke Skywalker.

Got a little older and went to David Bowie and Jim Morrison.

I need a new crush for the new millenium. Who are 44 year olds supposed to like?

Posted by: NW DC | January 11, 2008 2:50 PM

Definitely Kirk Cameron! I had stickers with his picture on them that I think came from a cereal box. I put them on the frame of my mirror. That mirror is still in my old bedroom at my mom's house today!

Posted by: Sweetie | January 11, 2008 2:50 PM

Lion-O, the hot cat from the Thundercats. God that says lots about me - maybe explains why I'm single.

Posted by: Not Bluto | January 11, 2008 2:52 PM

I am yet another one of the Ricky Schroeder groupies. I had a thing for blondes as a preteen. As a nice Jewish girl, it was a little rebellious and exotic to crush on WASPs!

I haven't seen my two big high school crushes listed:

Twin Peaks era Kyle MacLachlan - the only reason I sat through the entire nightmare of a movie that was The Doors. I had a great People Mag. photo of him in a FBI tank top that I even brought along with me to college.

Harry Connick, Jr - I thought I was so sophisticated to like swing/jazz and he was so dreamy with that New Orleans accent.

And just because this group loves a good Pride & Prejudice discussion, I have to say that Colin Firth's Mr. Darcy is definitely the most enduring character crush of all!

Posted by: lizzy bennet | January 11, 2008 2:54 PM

Wow, I totally forgot about Charles in Charge...And Andrew McCarthy...And I'll add one more -- before the whole "it was a dream/shower scene" Patrick Duffy during his Dallas years (yes, I was probably way too young to be watching Dallas!)...

What a great Friday list!

Posted by: WDC 21113 | January 11, 2008 2:55 PM

Oh no... this list inspired me to look up my first crush-- Jonathan Frakes, who played Commander Riker on Star Trek The Next Generation (probably responsible for my lifetime preference for furry men)-- and I see that he has an upcoming movie role billed only as "Grandfather". Oooh, no.

Posted by: WDC | January 11, 2008 3:01 PM

I was totally smitten with Macaulay Culkin. I used to pause "Home Alone" and kiss the tv, believing that where ever he was, he could feel it. I was 8, he was 10 - an older man!

I held a flame for him all through elementary and part of middle school and used to buy his biographies, claiming they were for my brothers who were big fans. I'm glad no one knew my wrath towards Anna Chlumsky when she got to kiss him in "My Girl".

Le sigh.

Posted by: FJK1983 | January 11, 2008 3:05 PM

my 16 year old daughter's biggest crush to date has been on johnny depp...so he might go down as the most timeless crush.

Posted by: jcm | January 11, 2008 3:06 PM

Bjorn Borg, I was about 12 (he must have been 16 or 17, just starting out on the pro tour). He was the reason I started paying tennis (still do). Those tanned legs, flowing blond locks, and short shorts (ahhh). I cried when he got married!

Posted by: cb | January 11, 2008 3:12 PM

Davey Jones from the Monkees when I was 5 or 6. I named my stuffed monkey after him.

First post-puberty crush: Nick Rhodes from Duran Duran. I recently met him at an autograph signing and he still made my heart flutter.

Now: Daniel Day Lewis and Jude Law (despite his recent bad movies)

Guess I always have a thing for Brits.

Posted by: Chicago | January 11, 2008 3:13 PM

It was the summer of 1964. I was 8 and my sister was almost 7. Paul was my man and John was hers. We set up our Beatle home on the side yard of our house. It was so nice and shady and cool. We pretended to be the Missus and played our hearts out all day. It was the one of the funnest things I remember doing with my sister. We did this all summer long, with each of us declaring "our Beatle" was the best husband and bandmate. She became the Beatle fanatic once grownup and has a room in her home devoted to all things Beatles, but more John stuff than any other.

Posted by: NanFan56 | January 11, 2008 3:15 PM

Ricky (er, Rick) Schroder from Silver Spoons. He was so dreamy.

Posted by: lettermangirl | January 11, 2008 3:16 PM

Paul McCartney--those eyes, the singing voice, the speaking voice, the beautiful hair. I melted during that first close-up in Help! And when he winked at Ahme, more weak knees.

I never understood how it could be that I was too young for him in 1964 and too old for him in 2002. Life is so unfair.

Paul, I'm still waiting for you. Call me.

Posted by: Just Me | January 11, 2008 3:16 PM

This is beyond mortifying because when I look back on this character now, he looks like the biggest pansy. But I (and my sister) had a huge crush on Atreyu from The Never Ending Story.

Posted by: So Embarrassing | January 11, 2008 3:29 PM

Wil (yes he only spells it with one L) Wheaton was my favorite. I have watched Stand By Me too many times to count and can still quote almost every line. I love seeing him now on all the VH1 specials!

Posted by: Gordie LaChance | January 11, 2008 3:34 PM

I too LOVED Shaun Cassidy first. After him, it was (in no particular order):

Simon Le Bon
Richard Grieco
Jake Ryan in Sixteen Candles (what is his real name??)
Matt Dillon in Little Darlings
John Schneider
George Clooney on The Facts of Life

Posted by: still | January 11, 2008 3:35 PM

Hey, Phil (01:37 PM) -- Kristy McNichol was my first crush too. Those eyes, that smile.

I suffered through way too many "Family" episodes hoping that Sada Thompson or Meredith Baxter would get off the screen so I could get a glimpse of little Buddy. When she starting dating Willie Aames on the show (T.J.) I was beside myself. She was MINE!

I even liked her in that bad movie about the disabled flautist who wore a cast on her leg so she could snag Michael Ontkean at the ski resort.

And that movie she did with Marsha Mason? I smelled Academy Award.

What a babe.

Posted by: td | January 11, 2008 3:36 PM

Shaun Cassidy and Andy Gibb, for sure, but also Paul Stanley from KISS! I know, I was a weird kid. An 8-year-old girl KISS fan.

Posted by: polly | January 11, 2008 3:37 PM

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Carrie Fisher yet!

Seeing Princess Leia on Jabba's sand barge in "Return of the Jedi," I learned what my special purpose is.

Posted by: Pompous Magnus | January 11, 2008 3:45 PM

You'll never believe this one... Noel Harrison, with Davey Jones a close second. In fact I had crushes on every single one of the Monkees. My siblings and I would even pretend we were the Monkees.

Posted by: mj | January 11, 2008 3:47 PM

OMG, I'm only a little older than you - i think I was in second grade when i got that exact album and hung that poster on my wall! I wasn't huge into crushes, but I did purchase every album of Shaun's.

I also liked Dirk Benedict - same light brown feathered hair thing, I think. Starbuck on the original Battlestar Galatica and Face on the A Team. Yummy. I wonder what's ever happened to him?

Shaun's performance on youtube sounds uncomfortably like a Wiggles song, doesn't it?!

Posted by: Susan | January 11, 2008 3:55 PM

Kirk Cameron! The back of my bedroom door sported a poster of Kirk in white pants, suspenders, and a peach t-shirt. How dreamy!

Also, little Joey Joe from NKOTB.

Posted by: darcie | January 11, 2008 3:58 PM

Hey, so embarassing, you realize that Atreyo was Boxie on the original Battlestar Galactica? Yeah, he grew up nicely didn't he? And Dirk Benedict has aged well too (I told you men with long blond hair were my weakness).

Posted by: ep | January 11, 2008 3:59 PM

Good God, Ad Rock? I would think MCA would be more your type...

Posted by: decadeinDC | January 11, 2008 4:01 PM

My first crush was JFK at 3. Then, Michael Landon from Bonanza and Davey Jones from The Monkees. I also had a big crush on Max Baer from the Beverly Hillbillies. Precocious and prolific crusher I was.

Posted by: Ole Miss | January 11, 2008 4:02 PM

Elton John. He played the piano and so did I! He was so cute with those glasses; I wore glasses too! I wrote him a crush of a fan letter but didn't mail it; I stashed it in one of the drawers of the cocktail table. One of my sisters found it and read it OUT LOUD to the whole family at the dinner table. I was humiliated as only a 15 year old can be. I followed him faithfully through his albums: "Empty Sky", "Elton John", "Tumbleweed Connection", "Madman Across the Water", "Honky Chateau", "Don't Shoot the Piano Player", "Good Bye, Yellow Brick Road". Then "Caribou" came out and I realized something was wrong with the whole picture and Elton would never ever be interested in a 19 year old arty weirdo chick from California...

Posted by: Zuvielekatzen | January 11, 2008 4:03 PM

I'll second Kirk Cameron and "Doogie Howser" in the 80's, followed by Chris O'Donnell circa "Fried Green Tomatoes" (I was never so devastated by a train) and Ethan Embry circa "A Far Off Place" (I hated Reese Witherspoon for getting to kiss him!)

Posted by: uberdork | January 11, 2008 4:04 PM

My first celebrity crush that I can remember was JTT (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) also, but I think I just picked him because everyone else loved him too. By the time I was old enough to have legit crushes on celebrities, I was absolutely into Balthazar Getty in Lord of the Flies (which our freshman English teacher showed us in class...bad move because we were just fawning over BG instead of paying attention). Later when I started having different taste in music and movies my friend and I were obsessed with Brendan Sexton III circa Empire Records. Weird taste huh?

Posted by: cm | January 11, 2008 4:09 PM

Both Bobby Sherman and Bobby Goldsboro when I was 6. I wonder whatever happened to my Bobby Sherman poster?

Posted by: CallMeSkeptical | January 11, 2008 4:09 PM

The Beatles for sure (my friend and I played house and pretended we were married to a Beatle. We argued over who got to be married to Paul.)

Didn't anyone else have a crush on Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) from Dark Shadows? Or am I just that old?

Posted by: m.a. | January 11, 2008 4:10 PM

...Mark "The Bird" Fidrych...
Yowza! I'm from Detroit, so I know who he is. I remember enjoying watching his antics, but I never heard of anyone crushing on him!

Once I got a bit older, I totally crushed on Mikhail Baryshnikov. I still have a gorgeous poster of him tucked away somewhere. And, when I lived in the D.C. area for a few years, I luckily got to see him dance in person a few times.

Posted by: CJB | January 11, 2008 4:14 PM

I think my earliest was definitely NKOB when I heard "Please Don't Go Girl"...when they fell apart in 6th grade, I promptly moved on to 90210 - Jason Priestley and Luke Perry (I even had posters of them in my locker!). There were a string of the Teen Beat and Bop boys after that - Jonathon Taylor Thomas, Devon Sawa (Casper days), Jonathon Brandis, Elijah Wood (North and the Good Son)...Oh good times!
In 8th grade, I was enthralled with Rider Strong from Boy Meets World - he had my heart...sigh...we even drove by his house in LA when we were out there in 95...ridiculous... :-)

Nowadays, I think Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom top out my list...

Posted by: Ohyouknow | January 11, 2008 4:15 PM

Well...Bobby Sherman, David Cassidy, Parker Stevenson, Michael J. Fox, definitely Jake Ryan, Danny Gare (a hockey player on the Buffalo Sabres a billion years ago), and the guy who played Dr. Wiley on ER. Wouldn't say no to George Clooney or Anthony Edwards, Cal Ripken, or former NY Met David Cone.

Posted by: Mookie | January 11, 2008 4:16 PM

David Cassidy from the Partridge Family. When you said "first celebrity crush" earlier today, his face immediately came to mind but I could not remember his name to save my life. I had to google image all the cheesy 70s TV shows to find him. And all along, we could have been sisters-in-law, lizkelly.

Posted by: 33483 | January 11, 2008 4:17 PM

Jonathan Knight - NKOTB. I was 8 or 9? At the time he was the HOTTEST MAN ON EARTH! Ahh, young, innocent times. (Come to think of it, he was the basis of my current "type" - older man, dark hair, sweet/shy...)

Posted by: DJ | January 11, 2008 4:17 PM

OK, I am embarrassed to the teeth about this now and will never admit it to anyone un-anonymously, but Tom Cruise in the Top Gun era, anyone? Which also brings to mind Val Kilmer (back in the day).

Posted by: 80s girl | January 11, 2008 4:19 PM

my first was a cartoon too -- Marine Boy, when I was all of like 5. My friends and I would act out episodes and fight over who would get to be Neptina, who we all imagined to be his girlfriend on the side. I'm still a sucker for guys with big brown eyes and the ability to breathe underwater.

My sister was the Shaun Cassidy fan, but I was all about the rougher and much manlier Andy Gibb. I remember getting a copy of his album "Flowing Rivers" for my 8th birthday -- the one with him lying down in the thin, wet shirt, open to show his hairy chest -- and my grandmother was scandalized. But I was swooning!

Oh, I thought I'd get to be the first person to mention Wil Wheaton. I SO loved him back in the day, and he has this fabulous blog and writes wonderful books, so I feel like my fluttering heart made a good choice (check out www.wilwheaton.typepad.com).

As a kid, I also had a big thing for Ike Eisenmann, the boy from Escape to Witch Mountain. I realize now I just had a thing for skinny boys with brown hair...

A couple of my more embarrassing other crushes:

Anson Williams (aka "Potsie" from Happy Days)
Jeff Conaway (always Kenickie in my heart)
George Michael (had a poster from "Faith" era)

Posted by: WDC 21113 (yes, again) | January 11, 2008 4:30 PM

"...the guy who played Dr. Wiley on ER". Come on, if you're gonna have a crush on someone, at least know who it is. Noah Wyle played Dr. John Carter on ER, until he moved to France to be with his black wife, which endured him to me, cuz I loved that little white boy.

Yeah, I'm old - the only celeb that was hung on my wall was David McCallum - Illya Kuryakin on The Man From U.N.C.L.E. So broody, so blond, so Russian . . . sure beat Naploeon Solo.

Luke Skywalker/Mark Hammill was a boy. Han Solo/Harrison Ford is a man. I knew the difference between the two at 8 and have seen every single film Harrison Ford has done since The Empire Strikes Back.

Hey fellow Chad Allen fans! my goodness. I had a Tiger Beat poster of him in my locker. I absolutely loved "Our House"! I would read all those silly articles about him- did you know his last name was actually Lazarri? why I still remember I have no idea. he looks a bit creepy now.

Bowie will always be my biggest crush..

Posted by: iikamo | January 11, 2008 4:38 PM

Michael Landon during his Bonanza days... hmm so cute and he road a horse!

Posted by: Pippin | January 11, 2008 4:39 PM

I loved Lee Majors (6 Million Dollar Man), too! I was about 5 and watched religiously-- at the time I lived in South America and the show was dubbed into Spanish so I don't remember him speaking in English. My dad teases me about that crush to this day.... After that it was Rick Springfield for years...

Posted by: JJBooknut | January 11, 2008 4:39 PM

"So broody, so blond, so Russian . . ."

That's right, lafred - how could I have forgotten Ilya Kuryakin. I thought Napoleon Solo was rather dashing as well, but soooo boring compared to Ilya.

Posted by: m.a. | January 11, 2008 4:40 PM

Bret Michaels, which is kind of weird because theoretically I could be like Katie Holmes and live out my dream of marrying my school girl crush by attempting to become the winner of Rock of Love (I missed I and II, but I'm sure there will be more). I think I'll pass, though. I was 13 when I fell for him.

Posted by: melanie | January 11, 2008 4:41 PM

First came Rob Lowe, then River Phoenix.

In college, Greg Kinear and Ralph Fiennes.

TLC carpenters followed.

Now I love "ugly" guys, the pugilist type: McNulty, Joey Castillo from QotSA, Forest Griffin, Dave Eggers.

Posted by: atb | January 11, 2008 4:41 PM

My first crush probably isn't the typical teen heart throb. It was Michael Crawford, the original Phantom of the Opera. I must have listened to that recording a bijillion times when I first got it, which fueled endless adolescent fantasies of a mysterious man in a mask seducing me with his gorgeous voice in his velvety underground lair.

Posted by: irishgirl96 | January 11, 2008 4:41 PM

When I was in first grade, one of my classmates was in love with George Burns. I always thought that was really strange, given that it was 1979 and he was already well into his 80s.

Posted by: CAH | January 11, 2008 4:44 PM

I was wondering how I missed the news that Chad Allen was gay since I am a regular follower of celebrity gossip, so I had to wikipedia him out of curiosity and see that this has been public knowledge since 1996!! I guess that's why I missed the news, since there was no such thing as a celebrity gossip blog back in those days. How did we ever manage!?!

Posted by: off topic | January 11, 2008 4:44 PM

I am glad someone finally mentioned Paul McCartney; he along with Bobby Kennedy were my early teen crushes. Now I am crushing big time on Hugh Laurie and Barack Obama so maybe there is some continuity there!

Posted by: dee | January 11, 2008 4:44 PM

Don't even know the name of the actor, but Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez from "The Sandlot". The year was 1993. My age: 9. I know many of friends share this crush on Benjamin Franklin Rodriguez.

And this first crush is quite predictive of those that have come since. Tall, dark and handsome gets me every time.

Posted by: ASinMoCo | January 11, 2008 4:45 PM

When I was 10 I fell head over heels for Joey Tempest, lead singer of the Swedish hair metal band Europe, "The Final Countdown" was their biggest hit. I was furious at my mother because she wouldn't indulge me in my newfound obsession with all things Swedish by taking me to IKEA. That poster of Joey had to have it's lips wiped off every couple of months, somebody kept leaving lip prints in Bonne Bell strawberry gloss.;)
Though an even earlier crush was on Richard Dawson of The Family Feud. When I was two I'd run to the TV and kiss it while squealing, "Richie kissy kissy!" when I heard the theme song. I was so jealous when he kissed the contestants I wouldn't watch the rest of the show.

Posted by: TallulahBankrupt | January 11, 2008 4:45 PM

The age range on here is amusing :)

Showing my utter dorkiness (that I will never grow out of) - Sean Patrick Flanery. Yes, I did scream in the middle of Borders before Christmas when I saw the first volume of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles was finally out on DVD (even though vol. 1 is Cory Carrier episodes, and yes, I do remember his name from when I was ten). I never bothered to pay attention to actors names until his hotness came onscreen. I love Last Crusade, but can't really abide the intro portion because I'm sorry, River Phoenix just doesn't do it for me after seeing so much of Sean. River doesn't have the cheekiness that's so incredibly attractive.

But unfortunately, more recent crushes have led to spending lots of money going up to NY to see too many shows, so I can't afford the DVDs at the moment (plus want to wait and see what volume three is).

I also had a crush on Ernie Hemingway and TE Lawrence (can't remember the actor who played Ernie; Ned was Douglas Henshall, who is Scottish and brilliant and I still fancy him like mad, especially now that I've seen more of his work).

First person anyone has ever heard of: Tom Cruise. In my defence, it was Far and Away. And that one didn't really last to other films, so I think it was a crush on Joseph rather than actually on Tom Cruise.

don't worry, I am so with you on Sean Patrick Flanery. I was too old for him, but still....those eyes and those dimples. Henri Defense forever!

Posted by: young indie | January 11, 2008 4:52 PM

Just seeing the Shaun Cassidy picture made me weepy -- I adored his rabbit-like teeth and his "rebel" attitude.
However
My very first crush was Tom Jones. I must've been 3 or 4, I remember goggling at the television set while he gyrated and knowing that I needed to be closer to him. And yet, at that age, I actually thought he could see me from inside the box -- so I spent a lot of his show either hidden behind the couch or with a pillow in front of my face. I didn't want him to see me staring at him!
Scott Baio, Leif Garrett, Andy Gibb -- the 70s were good times. Duran Duran (John Taylor still), Sting, and Kiefer Sutherland got me through the 80s.
ALSO Randy Mantooth! First, Man + Tooth, how can you resist that? Then he was hella hot and a "doctor," cuz I didn't know from medicine at that age. I saw him in a coffee shop in LA about 5 years ago -- still smoking hot, but wearing makeup on a Saturday morning (not the hottest look for any man...unless he's also wearing a dress, I mean).

I don't remember my very first crush, for my age it probably should have been Michael Jackson, but don't think it was. I do remember having a crush on James DeBarge in high school (Janet Jackson's first husband). My best friend had a crush on El DeBarge. When she was a pregnant teenager, I remember visiting and she had written "DEBARGE" on all the baby stuff...weird. I also had a crush on Sam Bowie (played basketball for Univ. of KY) I even went to U of K because of it, although he had already gradutated, but I did end up dating a basketball player. Over the years there's been Dr. Carter on ER and for some unknown reason Tony Banks from Genesis and long before there was "The Daily Show", I loved me some Jon Stewart, he is probably my longest running crush.

Posted by: | January 11, 2008 4:58 PM

I had a major crush on D. B. Sweeney from the Cutting Edge when I was in middle school. My best friend and I would trade days when we were allowed to claim him as our biggest crushes. We also swapped days for Christian Laettner.

Posted by: musicgeek | January 11, 2008 5:05 PM

Patrick Swayze. When "Dirty Dancing" came out, I was 8, and during the scene where he was dancing with his shirt off and his back to the camera... yowza. His back and shoulder muscles sliding over his oiled torso - I had never seen anything like it. Looking back, I skipped right past the "tender confused crush" stage right on into wild fantasy, etc. I had no idea what it was all about, but I'd wait till my family were asleep at night and then practice seductive poses in my bedroom mirror, in case I ever met him.

And later, Johnathan Knight and Chris O'Donnell too.

As a young teenager, it was Harry Connick, Jr. for me too. I literally pined. Of course, I still feel that way about Clive Owen. How can life go on, if he doesn't love me back? Hubby says if I ever got the chance to have him, he'd turn a blind eye, as long as I'd do the same for him regarding Laetitia Casta. He's had a Laetitia thing for years.

Posted by: Karen | January 11, 2008 5:07 PM

melissamac1- I have to agree with your choices. And while this is embarrassing to admit, I even went so far as to write a letter to JTT inviting him to my Bat Mitzvah. All I got in return was a signed picture. I'm not sure what I actually expected, but that wasn't it.

Posted by: musicgeek | January 11, 2008 5:15 PM

This is an easy one-second grade, David Cassidy. I would literally swoon when I heard "I Think I Love You."

Soon thereafter it was Randolph Mantooth of Emergency. My cousin and I actually got into a fist fight over him! Being the older one, she tried to boss me and tell me that I had to take Roy DeSoto, Johnny Gage's less handsome and married partner!

Posted by: cherylinseattle | January 11, 2008 5:17 PM

I think my very first crush was Ricky Shroeder on Silver Spoons - third grade. Quickly replaced by my ultimate crush, Kirk Cameron, in 4th grade. Huge poster of him in a leather jacket, pinkish background, by my bed. In middle school, I had a thing for Richard Greico - not "21 Jump Street," though - I was a "Booker" fan.

But the longest lasting crush started with Han Solo in "Empire Strikes Back." The whole exchange right before he's put into suspended animation just *got* me, and it was all over.

for the next few years I added to a collage of all of the pictures that I could find of him from various magazines. It hung on the back of my door so I could gaze at it as I fell asleep, and it stayed there for years until I took it down the night before I got married.

(sigh)

I can't believe someone else liked G-Force. I was particularly fond of Jason, the one who dressed like a falcon. He was more dangerous and had ambiguous morals.

Then Davy Jones. Followed by Ricky Schroeder, then Alex P. Keaton. When I discovered music, I loved Mike Mills from REM, Alan Wilder from Depeche Mode, and Morrissey.

Magic Johnson - early 80s

Todd Bridges "Willis" - Different Strokes

Posted by: Marie | January 11, 2008 6:20 PM

James Spader... maybe it was his semi bad boy image he had in all his 80s movies, he brought that back with Boston Legal.... mmmm...

Posted by: VAtoLA | January 11, 2008 6:37 PM

Oh, when I was 5 or 6, I caught a showing of "Escape From Witch Mountain" and then its sequel, and that little blond alien boy with magic powers just seized my heart and my tearducts. I gushed about that stupid movie for YEARS!

Then I graduated to "The NeverEnding Story" and Barrett Oliver (he played "Bastian" - no "Atreyu" for me!). I had one black and white picture of him in my locker in high school - possibly from "Tiger Beat". It was my treasured possession for all four years, and I still have it carefully laid away. He was just soooooo pretty when he was 16.

I've had a thing for soulful dark-eyed guys ever since.

Posted by: off topic | January 11, 2008 04:44 PM

Don't worry, I caught it a couple of years ago on one of those child star update shows on E! or VH-1...And then NPH came out and I was like, good lord who's next?

Doesn't he have a twin sister, too?

Back on topic...Thought of two more on the commute that I haven't see -- Malcolm Jamel Warner from his Cosby days and Will Estes (I think that's his name) -- JJ from American Dreams (I have the soundtrack on my iPod).

Thank you, Would-Be Woody Allen, for the one great post in an otherwise dreary list. Do I sense the humor of Byoolin behind the scenes?

As for me, the screen goddess who first gave me the hots was Allison Hayes.

"Who she?" you ask?

I grew up with the original Mickey Mouse Club, and I was still too young to see what Annette had that the other girl Mouseketeers lacked, so my first crush was on the littlest of the Mouseketeers, Karen. At the end of each program, as they sang the Mickey Mouse Club theme song ("Come along and sing our song and join our family, M-I-C, K-E-Y, M-O-U-S-E"), the camera would zoom in on Karen and Cubby. I thought she had the cutest face and beautiful blonde hair.

The only other crushes I remember came much later, in my teen years. The two actresses that really did it for me were Ali McGraw, especially in "Good-by Columbus," and Katherine Ross in "The Graduate" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid."

Posted by: Tom | January 11, 2008 7:05 PM

Pete Duel from Alias Smith and Jones. Oh those dimples. I was crushed when he died. I couldn't watch the show after they replaced him with the narrator Roger Davis.

Ten bucks says some 22 year old neocon is going to say Ron Paul.

Posted by: DFC | January 11, 2008 7:34 PM

DFC - I always think of "RuPaul" when I hear that name... and I'm sure that someone out there had/has a crush on "her."

Posted by: ron Who? | January 11, 2008 7:48 PM

Then - Ralph Macchio (sp?) from the Karate Kid. Surprised it hasn't been mentioned? I was really young and didn't care that he was super scrawny.

Now - most of the male leads in a JJ Abrams production (Michael Vartan, Matthew Fox, Josh Holloway etc. etc.)

Posted by: me too | January 11, 2008 7:56 PM

Too funny...Reading this has reminded me how many different crushes I had...now all of the walks of shame back in the day are starting to make sense! :-)

started with Donny Osmand (had to have purple socks...) Woody from the Bay City Rollers...then onto Michael Nouri in Cliff Hangers - Curse of the Dark Shadow... Sean Cassidy - Hardy Boys...Vinny Barbarino...Randolph Mantooth (Emergency)...Patrick Duffy (Bobby) on Dallas...Andy from WKRP...then I discovered music and first there was Billy Squier...then the biggest crush of all; Roger Daltrey of The Who - owned every album by age 14.

Posted by: LIGirl missing her big hair | January 11, 2008 7:57 PM

First crush: Luke Skywalker while he's looking out at the two-sun sunset in Star Wars: A New Hope. I swooned.

High school crush - Jake Ryan, hands down. My friends and I wore out our video of "Sixteen Candles" rewinding over and over the part post-wedding where Samantha comes out of the church with her sister's veil and all of the other cars are driving away, the music starts and there's Jake leaning against his porschewaiting for her. Classic!

I loved the Partridge family, but I am filled with shame to admit my crush was on Danny Bonaduce, not David Cassidy. A few years later I had a major crush on Leif Garret.

Posted by: BLH | January 11, 2008 8:05 PM

My first celebrity crush was Michael Hutchence from INXS. I was at an INXS concert and I never seen a man so beautiful as him. I loved everything about him: his hair, Australian accent, the sweat, his smile. I was too sure where Australia was but if they had guys like him there I wanted to move.

Posted by: Lisa1 | January 11, 2008 8:23 PM

Shaun Cassidy here, too, at age 9. But I can do one better- I had a life-sized poster (or at least something close to life sized) on the back of my bedroom door. The odd part was that my *parents* bought the poster for me without me asking. I guess they thought it was cute that I had a crush, but wow, that's kind of weird in retrospect...

Posted by: Ms. Cassidy to you | January 11, 2008 8:46 PM

My first crush at age 9 or so was David Cassidy. Among the crushes of my teen years was Mikhail Baryshnikov, who remains one to this day.

Posted by: Michele | January 11, 2008 8:54 PM

I must be strange because I only crushed on real people in my life. I never was one to put posters of celebrities up in my room and imagine our being together if only they weren't married. I do recall liking Enzo Cerusico from a very short-lived series, My Friend Tony. I also loved Mark Lester from Oliver: sweet face and sweet voice singing in that movie. I will also admit to having disagreements with my best friend in high school about who was cuter, David Soul or Paul Michael Glaser. Thanks, Liz for something new to talk to my therapist about.

Posted by: On the Waterfront | January 11, 2008 9:11 PM

I've held onto my first crush since second grade.

Robert Vaughn from "The Man From U.N.C.L.E."

I just love his voice. Heck, I'll even watch the cheesy lawyer commericals that he's in.

Posted by: Postie | January 11, 2008 9:54 PM

My room was covered with posters of Jonathan Brandis when I was younger. He was the reason SeaQuest was my favorite show!!

Posted by: sj | January 11, 2008 10:41 PM

David Cassidy after I saw his armpits and the top of his pubes in Rolling Stone. AND Scott Baio who was forever parading his bulge and practically naked body in speedos, in all the teen msgs and Battle of the Network Stars.

Definitely Shaun Cassidy. Followed by Leif Garrett and the Dukes of Hazzard Boys. Erik Estrada, anyone? I loved CHiPS. I was also into Sting and Bono for a while - still am, really. Both have aged well.

However, my biggest crush had to be on Jack Wagner - Frisco on GH. I had the lyrics to "All I Need" written on the cover of my Geometry book. And, while Felicia was beautiful, I definitely had some hate for her.

Posted by: a | January 12, 2008 9:14 AM

OK, I've already fessed up to Kristy McNichol, but after reading all these posts about "Escape from Witch Mountain" I have to add another lesser crush:

Kim Richards

Ever since she was Prudence on "Nanny and the Professor" I thought she was so cute. Then the Witch Mountain movies -- "why are you using your powers against me?!" Sigh.

(And she even appeared on an episode of "Family" with you-know-who.)

Imagine my surprise to learn that Kim Richards is now Paris Hilton's AUNT!

Liz, remembering these long-ago crushes has been so cathartic!

Belinda Carlisle - that "Heaven Is A Place On Earth" video just drove me crazy.

Posted by: ljackson12 | January 12, 2008 6:54 PM

Okay. I know this makes me officially old, but my first major crush was David MaCallum as Illya Kuryakin on the Man From UNCLE. Was he ever gorgeous! I carry on my love affair today with NCIS. He's still gorgeous!

Also, Davy Jones was a big heartthrob.

Posted by: Judi | January 13, 2008 11:19 AM

I pined for Devon Sawa circa "Little Giants" - I totally wanted to be Becky/Icebox! And I'm hereby outing my little brother, too - he had a crush on Teri Hatcher circa "The Adventures of Lois & Clark" because of her 'smoooooooooth hair' (he was maybe 6 at the time?!).

Leonardo DiCaprio when he played "Luke Bauer" on Growing Pains. I was smitten. I knew he would make it big someday!

Marsha, Marsha, Marsha - Maureen you were the best.
Valerie Bertinelli - One day - anytime! She still looks good today
Heather Thomas- The bikini poster and the Fall Guy. I would jump out of a building for her anytime.

Posted by: D W | January 14, 2008 9:44 AM

Yes, Andy Gibb was my very young first crush, mainly b/c he was my older sister's (I must have been about 7?). I *still* have the original LP (yep) of Shadow Dancing complete w/ t-shirt transfer.

Once I was older, I quickly moved to Sting. First concert I attended was for the last Police tour (Synchronicity) and I was all of 12 1/2. Hey, I still have a crush on him 24 years later!

Posted by: bloomsday_37 | January 14, 2008 10:14 AM

Back when I thought I was straight, I had "crushes" on the Tiger Beat crowd just to fit in with my friends. But my first real crush was Katie Holmes when I was 15. I now realize what a huge mistake that was.

Posted by: julia | January 14, 2008 10:36 AM

C. Thomas Howell (stay gold!). Faithful to him until John Taylor took hold in 8th grade. Still carrying that crush!

Also, my cousins made fun of me when we saw "Nightmare on Elm Street" and I said Jonny Depp was cute. Who's laughing now? :D

Posted by: HH | January 14, 2008 11:04 AM

OMG, Liz! I haven't stopped by in a few days. It was like I was reading my own entry with this one. I still have that album because it was the very first record I ever got. I remember wanting to solve mysteries with the Hardy Boys. Oh, and Leif Garret and Andy Gibb - must have been the hair. Then I moved on the the Duke cousins (Bo and Luke), Scott Baio, Rick Springfield and John Stamos (General Hospital afternoons). Ahh, sweet innocent memories.

Posted by: Dlyn | January 14, 2008 12:23 PM

I remember like it was yesterday - imagine a tubby, frizzy-haired 4th grader wearing(pretty much every day) a hot pink t-shirt emblazoned with the handsome face of ANDY GIBB! I loved him and I loved making up dance moves to his song "Shadow Dancing." Even then I went for older men, not the teenage heartthrobs the other girls liked.

Posted by: Lisa | January 14, 2008 12:35 PM

oh my god, he looks just like the crazy magician guy from Arrested Development (GOB/JOB??).

Posted by: | January 14, 2008 12:35 PM

Liz, I think I'm about 3 years older than you...Shaun Cassidy, definitley-- my parents actually took me to the Richmond Coliseum to see him in concert when I was 9. It was absolute satin heaven.

But BEFORE Shaun..at age 6, I was in love with Tony Orlando! Now, I haven't seen his name come up yet, HA HA!

Fast forward to 1984, 10th grade-- completely obsessed with Duran Duran. My girlfrinds and I were paired up with each guy (except Andy, since he was ugly and married). My guy was Nick. So dreamy....

We actually wrote soap-opera-esq novels about out future lives with them. I still have mine, 350 loose-leaf notebook pages, hand written front & back.

Now that's devotion.

This could partly be the influence of my older sister who would commandeer the television, but my first full-blown crush was on Adrian Paul from the Highlander TV series. The scene in the opening credits where he's working out without his shirt on to this day makes me weak in the knees.

I also will admit a healthy crush on Richard Dean Anderson of MacGyver fame. Though this morphed in recent years to a very adult fantasy crush of Gen. Jack O'Neill from the Stargate franchise. Now, if I could only figure out how to get R.D.A and Michael Shanks to both fall madly in love with me, I would be SUCH a happy woman.

In order of my crush obsession:

1. Parker Stevenson from Hardy Boys
2. Mike from The Monkees (in syndication by my youth) He was the quiet type--I loved it.
2. Joey Joe McIntyre from NKOTB
3. Christian Bale from the Newsies

Christian Bale is the ongoing one. Just saw 3:10 to Yuma. My love is eternal.

Posted by: | January 14, 2008 1:39 PM

Pierce Brosnan in Remington Steele with a Bruce Willis in Moonlighting chaser. Could have easily been avoided with a decent intro to film noir class in 8th or 9th grade.

Posted by: erm | January 14, 2008 2:07 PM

I know this will date me horribly, so I won't sign my usual name - but my first crush was James Garner. I thought Maverick was the best show ever and Brett was the bravest handsomest man in the world. "Who's the tall dark stranger there, Maverick is the name, wild as the wind in Oregon, blowing up a canyon is easier to tame..." Sigh.

Shaun Cassidy. I was 7 yrs old and trying desperately to convince my family that a move from Western NY to CA was the way to go. My plan was to be a surfer/beach bunny and marry Shaun. Alas, we stayed in NY.

I absolutely loved Bobby Sherman (esp in his "Here Come the Brides" role); Pernell Roberts as Adam Cartwright in "Bonanza"; Lee Majors as Heath Barkley in the "Big Valley." There's something about a man on a horse......

REALLY showing my age with this one. And I have three, which I realize is more that what was requested:

1. Mighty Mouse - geez, I even had dreams about him :)
2. Sajid Khan, who played Raji on the TV show "Maya" (with Jay North --- who had played Dennis the Menace)
3. BOBBY SHERMAN

I just thought of another one from high school - Cameron (Alan Ruck) from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off". I'd fast-forward through the movie just for his best lines. I adored his dorky sound effects and his angst. [sigh!]

Oh yes ladies: I'm there with David McCallum as Ilya Kuryakin, followed closely by navigator Pavel Chekov on the good ship Enterprise. What was it about that accent?! Davy Jones, yeah babay, though I'd get him confused with Bobby Sherman, also cute as a button. Then there was sumpthin about Mac Davis on his variety show. hmm

Thought of a weird one when I saw Might Mouse mentioned above but I was totally for Speed Racer. Can't wait for the live action movie.

Posted by: Dlyn | January 15, 2008 1:01 PM

Let's see: Paul McCartney in the late 70s and I was like 8 or 9. I was just so devastated when I found out he was married! Then it was on to David Cassidy. It was 1978, I was reading an "official" biography of him--probably from Tiger Beat. Anyway, I was reading it and then my mom walked in my room and I was just so embarassed, I hid the damn book underneath my pillow. After that, Harrison Ford. No,not in Han Solo mode. But in "Blade Runner". I was too young to see the movie in the theatres at the time, so I read the Phillip K. Dick book AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN, just imagining Harrison in the book. I know he's now 65 and he dumped his first wife for Calista, but...Glad to see him as Indy again. Oh, yeah, and the main G-Force guy in 'Battle of the Planets'. Mark--was that his name? Thank goodness for You Tube. And thanks to Liz for this wonderful post.

Posted by: Alexandria | January 15, 2008 3:20 PM

Bay City Rollers: I went back and forth between Les McKeown and Eric Faulkner. I can't even count the hours I spent staring at the album cover and trying to decide which one I was going to marry. I was about 9 yrs old. I was also crushing on Brett Hudson of the Hudson Brothers.

Nick is in his 40s and he looks older than the both of them!!

Well right now I have a really big crush on Sara Paxton, the one who played "Aquamarine" and "Darcy". She's this really gorgeous blonde actress who resembles Reese Witherspoon, and is almost like a more talented and sexier version of Hilary Duff. Well, I always had a thing for Reese also, but Sara is alot more beautiful. When I went to see "Sydney White", I was seriously checking out Miss Paxton while everyone else was eyeing Amanda Bynes. I hope Sara becomes a big star, even though I would not want her to become a paparazzi target. But she is alot more beautiful than all the other so-called "starlets" out there.

Posted by: Christopher | January 19, 2008 8:54 AM

I was a Duran Duran freak! I still love those guys. While nowadays I love all of them, Nick Rhodes was the man of my dreams. Just those pouty lips and those enormous green eyes made me melt. He's still such a beautiful man. They all are, including Andy Taylor. I also had crushes on Corey Feldman, Peter Tork of The Monkees, Johnny Depp (I'm still mad for him), Harrison Ford, Will Smith, Fred Savage, Mathew Lawrence, all of The Backstreet Boys and Ewan McGregor.

Posted by: Michelle | January 19, 2008 8:59 AM

There was a time when Britney Spears was my biggest celebrity crush and she was also my first celebrity crush, even though I vaguely recall loving Drew Barrymore, but that was just a little tiny crush. But after seeing Britney in that catholic school uniform I was forever a changed man. I had the longest crush on her for several years after that and she just kept getting sexier and more beautiful everytime I saw her. Then I quickly got over her after I saw her coming out of a bathroom sans shoes, because I thought that was the most disgusting thing I'd ever seen anyone do in my life. The more disgusting and unflattering photos I saw of Britney (having her baby sit in her lap while driving, those infamous pictures of her in NYC nearly dropping her baby, the horrendous "Dateline" interview, the infamous nachos photos, the flashing, the shaven head and of course all the pictures of her now-especially newer ones that are really gross and I won't go too far into that only to say there was some blood in a certain area) the less I fantasize about her. I do feel for her and want her to get help for whatever problems she has, but all the fantasies I once had about her are now all gone. Luckily, Angelina Jolie and Scarlett Johansson are filling that void very nicely.

Posted by: Pete | January 20, 2008 12:43 PM

I'm noticing alot of fellow Duranies on here. I remember being completely obsessed with John Taylor and Simon LeBon thinking they were the two most beautiful men God has ever put on this earth. Not since I was debating over Han Solo or Luke Skywalker have I ever been so obsessed with two men before in my entire life. Nowadays, in my 40s, I'm finding myself drooling over younger tykes such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Hayden Christensen.
