Highbrow: Lindsay Lohan's Bombshell Bid

(Reuters)
Lindsay Lohan roared back onto the pop culture landscape earlier this week when (NSFW) pics of the 21-year-old rehab grad aping Marilyn Monroe's iconic "last sitting" photo shoot appeared in the latest issue of New York magazine. When we said back in January that Lohan was ripe for career reinvention, mimicry of a drug-addled icon was hardly what we had in mind.
Which is probably why the spread is so effective. It is at once profane and provocative, sad and seductive. But is the 21-year-old "Mean Girls" star merely basking in the reflected mystique of the long dead Monroe or conjuring some mythology of her own?
Mom Dinah described the pictures as "tasteful" and "artistic." Though taste is subjective. One woman's tasteful artistry is another's gimmicky, naked play for relevance.
L.A. Times blogger Monica Corcoran asks why it is that starlets insist on "channeling" Marilyn to prove they've got unseen depths. Citing similar stunts by Drew Barrymore and Scarlett Johannson, Corcoran says it's "rather sad that so many young actresses crib Monroe instead of inventing their own unique images."
One commenter there responds:
"...what people fail to see is that Marilyn Monroe was just the Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears of the '50s & '60s."
Though comparisons between Monroe and the new millennial bad girls hardly seem fair. At the time Monroe took it all off for Stern she was 36 and had a handful of homerun movie roles ("The Misfits," "Some Like It Hot," "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes") to her credit. Lohan is 21 and can credit 2004's "Mean Girls" as her career high point. While both Monroe and Lohan struggled with addiction, Lohan is hardly the tragic figure the unraveling Monroe was in 1962. In point of fact, Heath Ledger -- who died from a fatal overdose of prescription drugs in January -- had more in common with Monroe. He was another promising actor who -- it would seem -- was his own worst enemy
Rather than serving as Lohan's Drew Barrymore career-saving "Poison Ivy" moment, the New York magazine spread may end up as Lohan's Icarus moment. Like the Greek mortal who dared to fly too close to the sun in emulation of the Gods, Lohan has dared to compare herself with a triple-A rated icon. One can hardly hope to out-Marilyn Marilyn.
Where Monroe was tragic and flailing, Lohan is pitiful and desperate. A public already saturated with images of Lohan in far more compromising positions will hardly be inspired to view her in a new light. Radar Online's quick survey of PR experts would seem to agree:
"She needs to get back to acting," said one. "I'd rather see her do a student film at USC than take her clothes off in a look-at-me-moment. These shots run the real risk of overshadowing her acting career."
And a quick scan of the Interwebs finds reaction largely concentrating on the nudie angle. Not once did this blogger find a sentence resembling anything like "Gee, these nude pix of Lindsay Lohan posing as Marilyn really have turned around my previous dismissal of her talents. Clearly she's on her way to an Oscar."
Wrote Dana Goodyear over at the New Yorker Web site:
I think that I now understand something about the Internet that had previously eluded me--that is, what it feels like to click on the word 'nude,' and feel a little thrill at gaining access to a cache of photos.
In fact, the biggest beneficiary from Lohan's spread (she wasn't payed paid for the shoot) may be New York Magazine's Web site, which had so much traffic on Monday that it temporarily went down. Problem fixed, the site went on to score an estimated $500,000 in ad impressions, according to Forbes.com.

This is obviously just an attempt to make headlines and get people to pay attention to her again. Hey, maybe Hillary should give it a try.

Off-topic, but have you seen How Lost is Like the War in Iraq?

Why does LiLo insist on going blonde? The girl is gorgeous as a redhead with those adorable freckles and it all goes out of whack with the blonde angle (not to mention the fake-n-bake tan). Even Nichole Kidman's gone totally blonde from being a cute strawberry as well. Please bring back the red LiLo. Your fellow freckled redheads need you! As far as the pics go, LiLo doesn't look as relaxed in front of the camera as Ms. Monroe so for me that's the big dissapointment in comparison.
Ok. rant over.

"She wasn't payed (sic) for the shoot."
It's "paid," not "payed."

Based on the scathing comments made by almost everyone who saw the photos, I think the reaction might send LiLo into a tailspin. The wig, makeup, and fake eyelashes made her look 45 not 21. The black and white photos made her skin look bad. And considering the rather amble size of her chest, the standing shots made them look too saggy. The photographer should have posed her with her arms supporting her chest or in a reclined position. Lilos best asset is her natural red hair. She lookes too washed out as a blond.

Possum - i think your Hillary comment is terrible. Why is it that blatent sexism toward her is acceptible in a way that racism would never be toward Barack?
I feel a lot for Clinton as she puts her self out there in the public eye and ends up being compared to young starlets with drug and alcohol problems that is taking their clothes off. She doesn't even get the respect shown to older women stars like Helen Mirren or Meryl Streep.
Just thought since this is the Highbrow day I'm allowed to venture into this discussion of public figures and sexism. Sorry if too serious.

The only word that comes to mind is "pendulous".

I clicked through the LL pics yesterday, and they really screamed "trying too hard to imitate Marilyn Monroe!!!" And what was up with that wig? I looked just plopped on her head, not sensually tossled.
So the overall impression I got was 'Hey look, there's Lindsey Lohan pretending she's MM! And she's naked!"
Posted by: e | February 21, 2008 11:27 AM
Bert Stern, the photographer of Marilyn, seems to have asked LL to pose and it was not initiated by her.
As for the shoot itself the pics are fine. They could have been photoshopped to perfection but they left the flaws in. I prefer women with flaws. The flawless ones are a lot harder to find.
At age 21 MM had no hits and was still a bad actress (the Copacabana School of Dramatic Art was yet to come) so 1-0 to LL. If LL is alive at 37 that will be 2-0 and game.

Lohan has surely provided enough spectacle in the last couple of years. All she's doing here is volunteering to erase her privacy even more. And I agree that it's kind of disturbing that young actresses can't find anyone else to identify with other than Marilyn Monroe. It's like embracing someone else's tragedy instead of taking the time to grow into their own image and identity. One intelligent, self-aware, and fully-clothed Natalie Portman is worth a dozen naked and dead-eyed Lindsay Lohans.

"One woman's tasteful artistry is another's gimmicky, naked play for relevance."
I couldn't agree more. I'm in the gimmicky camp. It strikes me as a sad state of affairs that she stoops to nudie photos (which is all this amounts to mind my opinion)to get her name out there and I guess she's trying to get her career back on track. Rather than going nude she should put some clothes on, focus on what she learned in rehab and take small gigs (take a couple acting classes). I'm confused as to how these photos are going to make her movies at all interesting. It's just sad.

Now I'm a bit torn here. I actually did enjoy LiLo's performances in "Mean Girls" and the Garrison Keilor movie; if she would concentrate, she could be a good actress. The problem is she seems a bit too wrapped in the image of being Lindsay Lohan and has forgotten the acting side. The photos were all right as photos go, I suppose. The thing LiLo is missing is vulnerability, which Marilyn had in spades. LiLo's pictures were hard and calculating. If she were going to go the Marilyn route, she should have done Marilyn's first nude shoot -- the iconic red velvet shot. That one she could have pulled off and I don't think anyone would have given her as much grief. Personally, I now think she shouldn't be looking at full roles to re-establish herself, but a series of quirky cameos in solid films.

Sorry, but you have it backwards. At 21, Marilyn had her best work ahead of her; LL has already peaked. (1-0) Marilyn starred in "Some Like it Hot", recognized as perhaps the greatest comedy film of all time; LL starred in one pretty good teen flick (2-0). Marilyn invented herself; LL IS a Disney remake (3-0). Marilyn battled personal demons and died tragically; LL is a pretty young rich girl who LIVES tragically (4-0). Watch the recent PBS special about photographing Marilyn (was it an American Masters series?), and then look at the lifeless, cold fish Lohan pics (5-0) Game over.

In point of fact, Heath Ledger -- who died from a fatal overdose of prescription drugs in January -- had more in common with Monroe. He was another promising actor who -- it would seem -- was his own worst enemy
Did I miss something?
The last I heard Heath Ledger died of an ACCIDENTAL overdose resulting from the combination of two or more Rx drugs taken in the correct doses - this does not make him "his own wrost enemy," but rather a tragic accident. I could understand this comparison if there was any indication that he was *abusing* drugs, but that does not appear to be the case.
As I said yesterday, I think the Marilyn redux photos are in bad taste. I also agree that the photos are just not engaging in the way the originals were - Marilyn appeared to be enjoying herself and to connect with the photog in an emotional way that the camara caught. Lilo appears to be imitating Marilyn and either bored or too tense to show emotion. And, again, I think the photog inviting this girl who clearly has judgment issues to imiate this deceased actress who also had judgment issues is just creepy.

Kudos to JanetK!
I'm also far more interested in the lives of intelligent, self-possessed, and talented young women like Natalie Portman, Claire Danes, Julia Stiles, and Amanda Peet, than I am curious about the latest drunken exploits of vapid, low-class, and behavior-challenged clowns such as Lindsay, Britney, and Paris.

The LL photos are a great anti-tanning message. The sun damage on her skin is scary!

This is leftover from the Celebritology Chat, and along the lines of HelenaHandbasket... Kate Winslet c/would do a decent depiction of MM in a photo shoot (note: I'm not saying "copying MM's last photo shoot). Ms. Winslet is real, real, real and has class to spare.

LiLo at 21 looks older and harder than the 36-year-old Marilyn. There's no playfulness, vulnerability, or joy in the LiLo pictures----just some big boobs. It's all very sad.
Posted by: chantooz | February 22, 2008 9:54 AM
Agree w chantooz, it is very sad...
& helenhandbasket too, let's chalk up the
3 (Lindsay, Paris & Britney) as the downside of American culture, & concentrate
on the good - there are many wonderful female artists that deserve far more press & accolades than this trio continues to get!! That's the REALLY sad part!! But wait - i forgot - they have talent, so they don't need to throw themselves out there continually!
