Mary-Kate Olsen Raided My Memory

I know Celebritology readers aren't big fans of critical takedowns of celebs caught in a bad photo moment and I could never hope to out-Fug the Fug Girls, but when I saw this picture of Mary-Kate Olsen cross the wires, well, I knew it was incumbent upon me to say something. Because this photo contains concrete evidence of the lengths to which Mary-Kate will go to further her diabolical scheme to drive me insane.

Mary-Kate Olsen is a shape shifter, a fashion faux pas of the first order and, now, guilty of ransacking my memory banks to find new and twisted ways in which to accoutre her diminutive frame.

The evidence:

1. Mary-Kate is wearing my grandmother's mink stole, the one that spent several years stashed in an attic crawlspace with other useless, decaying items. How did Mary-Kate get it? She's just that good.

2. Mary-Kate is wearing the exact same dress worn by my brother's girlfriend to their 1977 prom at Fairfax's fine Edison High School. Although that dress was deemed "foxy" by my brother 30 years ago, it could best be repurposed as bread basket liners at a Polynesian-themed restaurant at this point.

3. The massive bracelet encircling Mary-Kate's twig-like wrist may not be the same one my grandmother spent years assembling for me, but it clearly draws its inspiration from mine. Actually, by the time my grandmother deemed me responsible enough to keep the bracelet (when I was 22), it was about 10 sizes too small for my wrist and disappeared, possibly into the same bag containing the mink stole.

4. In 1991 while visiting Houston, I ate at a Benihana steak house. Mary-Kate's actual human-sized companion is wearing a head scarf reminiscent of the toque worn by the man who chopped my veggies that night. Since it is utterly at odds with her retro gown, I can only assume that Mary-Kate forced it on her head.

I am now suspicious of everyone -- especially my mom, who may be secretly funneling Goodwill rejects to MK.

That really is an atrocious outfit. Except the purse, I'd love to have that purse.

Remember when there was a countdown to when the Olsen twins were 18 because they were so attractive in their teens? Amazing how things can change in a couple years.

You are hilarious.

Posted by: chocolatetiara | March 13, 2008 11:13 AM

It's cruel to write about someone with Fashion Sense Deficit Disorder in this heartless manner. I insist you take this post down immediately.

Posted by: h3 | March 13, 2008 11:18 AM

this is why, ladies, you DO NOT let an olsen twin dress you.

Posted by: melissamac | March 13, 2008 11:31 AM

Geez. By comparison, I *am too* capable of dressing myself.

(Not that it will stop the Lovely Mrs. byoolin's disapproving/disappointed look after I attempt to do so.)

Posted by: byoolin | March 13, 2008 11:35 AM

I used to wear this goodwill crap in high school no one called me a fashion icon. Looking at MK I realized I stupid I must have looked.

Posted by: jake e. poo | March 13, 2008 11:53 AM

Oh jake e. poo, that was HIGH SCHOOL where the students took themselves too seriously, but we all know now that no one else did.

Are you still dressing like that now? I doubt it. Big difference between you and MKO.

Posted by: con-e | March 13, 2008 12:03 PM

Proving once again that money can't buy taste. Or, apparently, a mirror to see how you really look before you leave the (pent)house.

Posted by: hangin in herndon | March 13, 2008 12:04 PM

If I were Goodwill, I would sue for defamation. It ain't their fault that MK went through the rejects bin.

With eyes that big you would think she could see how bad she looks.

Posted by: ep | March 13, 2008 12:05 PM

Actually I do still stop at thrift stores, but I have learned to put my findings together much better.

Posted by: jake e. poo | March 13, 2008 12:13 PM

Funny post Liz.

I think we are seeing MK's attempt to have someone take the heat off her by having them dress poorly as well. MK hasn't quite gotten the hang of it yet but mark my words we will see this woman again and she will manage to out trump the Olsens allowing them to continue to wear whatever they find on the street without anyone noticing. Pretty crafty.

Still puzzled - why are these Olsen things still famous?

Posted by: jaybbub | March 13, 2008 12:41 PM

Love the description of the 1977 prom dress as "foxy"! I too wore a "foxy" prom dress in 1977. The pattern on the fabric (I believe it was 100% polyester) was akin to something my grandmother would have used for curtains or a tablecloth. Oh, but I was 'foxy'. And could I dance...those were the days my friends...

Every time I see MKO, I wonder if it was something about the Full House experience that sent her careening over the edge. Perhaps the sheer number of times she was forced to say the line, "You got it, dude." Or "You're in big trouble, misters." The sheer force of repeating that crap could very well have warped her sense of reality.

Or it could be from having that much Dave Coulier exposure before her brain stem fully developed. I can't decide.

Posted by: ironmountain | March 13, 2008 1:13 PM

Is MK herself not a Goodwill reject? I've seen homeless people who look healthier and better-dressed. That girl is seriously scary-looking.

Posted by: Eeek | March 13, 2008 1:29 PM

Keep the makeup, dye the hair black, get some goth duds.

Posted by: | March 13, 2008 1:35 PM

Liz, you are hilarious and I love you. Only, that's *my* grandmother's old stole.

Posted by: Sam888 | March 13, 2008 1:52 PM

I've bought some very nice things at Goodwill. I think MKO looks more like she's been digging through the Dumpster.
Maybe she's a Dumpster Hamster.

Sorry you all, if you were going to prom in the 70s I don't know that you can claim a true ability to judge cutting edge trends. MKO isn't going for timeless classic here, she is stepping out in the now. And if it looks like the Foxy dress you wore to prom, than kudos to you! Great taste. I think this is a FANTASTIC outfit!

Having said that, I do second the Benihana headband comment. That was right on.

OT.... Cat on the keyboard advice (desktop only).

My tabby boy likes to pull the keyboard trick, too. So, I moved the keyboard to the pull-out thingy at the desk. I genderally don't use that because it is too low for me. Then I left the space in front of the monitor cleared off. The tabby occupies that space when I'm on the computer, and I can see perfectly over his fuzziness to the monitor and type mostly unhindered. Since he's right in front of me, I talk to him and give him pettins. He's happy, I'm happy. Now if only I can get him to stop chasing the mouse....

Posted by: DC Cubefarm | March 13, 2008 3:47 PM

DC Cubefarm,

Liz's kitty kat is sitting on a LAPTOP KEYBOARD. So your trick might not work.

Apparently, our Liz is so petite that there is simply not enough room on her lap for the laptop and the kitty.

The only solution for her is to eat lots of chocolate and gain some weight.

Posted by: MoCoSnarky | March 13, 2008 4:47 PM

Ashley - is that you (maybebaby)?

Posted by: m.a.t. | March 13, 2008 5:18 PM

I had a word document just for my cats, that I'd open whenever one insisted on walking across the keyboard.

The document's been deleted since they weren't coming up with anything interesting. I was hoping for one to write something Shakespearean, but maybe I needed more cats and more years.

After closer inspection I have to ask: What the hell is that stuff hanging off the tall chick's midriff? Kudzu? Mold? Spanish Moss?

Posted by: possum | March 13, 2008 5:42 PM

Are there any pix of MKO in which she doesn't look as though she's bravely holding back tears?

Posted by: Angela | March 13, 2008 10:15 PM

Mary-Kate Olsen is beautiful. Many wealthy men on billionairefriends.com want to marry a woman like her. If I were her, I would check them out.

Posted by: sunshine | March 14, 2008 8:22 AM

Looks like MKO also found that pair of binoculars Liz stashed away.

You know, the ones with the charcoal rubbed on the eyepieces?
