I still have a crush on Michael Stipe...

Michael Stipe GAY?!?

Next you'll tell me that Ray Charles was blind.

Woops. I'd like to amend that previous post.

Michael Stipe GAY?!?

Next you'll tell me that Heather Mills is bat-guano crazy.

Some people just can't escape their image. Case in point:

Even reading the print-friendly text-only version of that Mariah Carey piece, I *still* can't stop staring at her, ah, 'shoes.'

Posted by: byoolin | March 18, 2008 8:53 AM

Hi Liz,

Not that it matters too much, but the link says that Donnie and Marie are hosting the Miss USA pageant, not Miss America.

Posted by: Anonymous | March 18, 2008 8:54 AM

She, however, did not use the word properly. I guess she thinks it is intelligent just to sprinkle long words hither and yon, with no real connection between their meaning and the sentence. But she has nice shoes.

Posted by: Anonymous | March 18, 2008 9:05 AM

Honestly, the Stipe item was a surprise to me, but mainly because I don't give a rat's patoot about Stipe to start with. IMO his best work was "Shiny Happy Monsters" on Sesame Street. And personal to Kristin Davis...even if it's not you, I'm pretending it is, you saucy minx.

Posted by: 23112 | March 18, 2008 9:15 AM

Actually, on the Donnie & Marie piece, it does matter about Miss USA vs. Miss America. Miss America is a scholarship based pageant; Miss USA is more cash prizes. One of my great friends went to college with scholarships earned through the local Miss America pageants (miss her town, miss her county).

Congrats to Soleil and family!

Didn't Michael come out of the closet a couple years back? I was as shocked then as I am now (not at all).

I didn't think Mariah knew the word "dichotomy" existed so I give her points for that.

Has Larry switched from pimping his daughter to pimping the memory of his ex and her son?

Fresh from a lucrative divorce settlement Heather Mills acquires ambulance chaser type representation before her hunt for even more gold.

Posted by: petal | March 18, 2008 9:31 AM

Looks like Mariah got herself one of those "Word A Day" Calendars.

Posted by: jake e. poo | March 18, 2008 9:33 AM

Michael Stipe: Sorry, I have a difficult time believing that someone as aware and as intelligent as Stipe didn't realize the power his coming out would have had in the GLBT community. I think he didn't come out because he figured it wasn't anyone's business but his own, and he's right. But to say he didn't know how meaningful that would be to people still in the closet is disingenuous.

Mariah Caray: dichotomy...I saw that yesterday and didn't mention it because I didn't want to be a member of the word police. Then the word police jumped on Sheryl Crow (for her apparent mis-use of 'non-plussed') and then I knew that when duty calls, the word police are there. And thank God for it.

Gary Busey: when will he put out a press release about his appalling behavior toward the 11-year-old "reporter" he spoke to (or ranted to) at the Oscars? Or hasn't he seen that tape yet. Talk about bat guano crazy...he's a menace.

Posted by: methinks | March 18, 2008 9:39 AM

At least according to his Wikipedia entry Stipe only said that he was bi when he first came out.

I guess Mr. Jane is going to get punished for that. (yes, I know, bad pun)

Posted by: EricS | March 18, 2008 9:39 AM

re: Michael Stipe... I don't care - he's still hot to me. I've been mooning over him since 1990.

Posted by: danielle | March 18, 2008 9:44 AM

Don't even need to read the item because this sentence - "Mariah Carey uses the word "dichotomy" in a sentence" - provides all the laffs I need.

And then some.

Posted by: jaybbub | March 18, 2008 9:54 AM

I just read that Anthony Minghella (director of The English Patient and The Last King of Scotland, among others) has died.

Posted by: methinks | March 18, 2008 9:54 AM

I don't think she used "dichotomy" incorrectly - as I read it, she was referring to the difference between her image as an extremely talented singer/entertainer (I assume that she is implying that this takes some amount of intelligence, organization, etc.) as opposed to her image as a dingbat...so, I think that probably qualifies as a dichotomy, no?

Posted by: sunnydaze | March 18, 2008 10:05 AM

Personally, I always thought Michael Stipe was pansexual. That he's simply homosexual is news to me ;)

Posted by: Chasmosaur | March 18, 2008 10:09 AM

Here's the link on Anthony Minghella.

Methinks, I agree. "he 'didn't always see' how coming out could help others" is simply not believable. He waited until it would no longer be a big issue, and therefore would do far less to help the community than it would have had he come out years ago. I can understand staying the closet to help your career, but claiming that you didn't think it would matter is complete bull.

Posted by: julia | March 18, 2008 10:18 AM

I think Courtney's statement that Michael Stipe made out with Kurt Cobain kinda gave it away to me that he was gay.

Posted by: Pompous Magnus | March 18, 2008 10:19 AM

"as opposed to her image as a dingbat..."
says sunnydaze re: Mariah.
I say there is no "image" of Mariah as a dingbat. She has proven she is a dingbat when she says things like, "I'm Mary Poppins," when she struts around in stilettos, micro minis, and shirts that emphasize/call attn. to her 'shoes'.
Look, she can dress any way she wants and strut her stuff like Lady Marmalade all day long, but don't try to tell me you're as pure as Poppins 'cause it just doesn't fly.
And I'm not even going to bring up all the dingbat stuff she's done in the relatively distant past when she was dealing with her "exhaustion" issues.

Posted by: methinks | March 18, 2008 10:28 AM

Diddy, if the story that the LA Times printed is false, why not have your lawyer(s) demand a retraction and if they refuse sue them for slander? Or is there the slight possibility it is true....hmmmm.

Posted by: no_bs_4me | March 18, 2008 10:30 AM

I should have edited before posting. My bad. I meant to say, "when she says things like, "I'm Mary Poppins," THEN struts around..etc.etc" continue rant...

Posted by: methinks | March 18, 2008 10:31 AM

What's the over/under on Madonna's divorce now that her spokeswoman has declare her 'happily married'?

Posted by: jes | March 18, 2008 10:46 AM

Clearly, P to the Puff to the Diddy Diddy Daddy needs to hire Gloria Alred. She would make sure that Mr. Diddy would be fairly represented because Mr. Diddy was a winner before he met Mr. Shakur and continues to be a winner. Ms. Alred likes winners. She also admires celebrities who do charity work.

Posted by: MoCoSnarky | March 18, 2008 10:50 AM

I have an admission to make. I like Mariah Carey. And that story kind of makes me like her more. And I've seen Glitter and it was the worst movie ever (I speak here as a person who has also seen Cool as Ice). But still - I just like her.

Posted by: h3 | March 18, 2008 10:55 AM

Michael Stipe GAY?!?

Next you'll tell me that Ray Charles was blind.

Posted by: byoolin | March 18, 2008 08:47 AM

Ray Charles was blind?!?!? Does that mean Stevie is too?

Posted by: jes | March 18, 2008 10:59 AM

Does anyone thing Soleil Moon Frye's name for her daughter, Jagger Joseph Blue Goldberg, is a bit odd? I mean, I know we're talking about Soleil Moon Frye, but Jagger Joseph Blue? Sounds much more "boy like" to me.

Posted by: wpb | March 18, 2008 11:16 AM

not be misconstrued, I am certainly not trying to make an arguement that Ms. Carey is NOT a dingbat. I just think that she used the disputed word correctly in speaking about how other people view her in two very different lights.

Posted by: sunnydaze | March 18, 2008 11:32 AM

God is love.
Love is blind.
Ray Charles is blind.
Therefore, Ray Charles is God.

I don't know how Micheal Stipe fits into this, but I once saw him kiss my roommate, and there was "no tongue", so there you are.

Posted by: possum | March 18, 2008 11:43 AM

I have all Mariah Carey's album and DVDs and had also seen Glitter and Cool as Ice
(I had a poster of Mr. Ice) so I can say that Mariah is still a dingbat.

Posted by: Lisa1 | March 18, 2008 11:45 AM

Madonna's marriage will be over next week. Jeez, don't they know it is the kiss of death to announce how happy a marriage is?

Are they selling tickets to the fight between Gloria Allred and Heather Mills to see who gets the microphone first?

Posted by: ep | March 18, 2008 11:58 AM

Here's when I learned that Madonna's marriage was going down hill. Several weeks ago, Guy Ritchie was being interviewed about his new movie (I think it was about his movie, anyway it was about him) Madonna, just jumped in and started talking about...something. The look on his face said it all. I couldn't believe that she couldn't just let him have the spotlight for 5 minutes. Sorry, I don't remember the occasion or where I saw it. Maybe someone else remembers.

Posted by: Anonymous | March 18, 2008 12:37 PM

I thought Michael Stipe came out years ago. Didn't care then, don't care now.
If he really wants to clear up a mystery he should publish the lyrics to the early REM songs. WTF was he saying, anyway?

Larry Burkhead..there are no words. We know you're slime but really, Anna Nicole and her son are dead. Leave them be. You may not read, but your daughter probably will learn one day. You'll already have to explain why you felt the need to take her to visit her mother's grave with a camera crew, do you want to have to explain why you trashed her mother and brother, too?

What does Heathen...er Heather Mills need a US attorney for? And honey, hooking up with Gloria Allred is going to do nothing to improve your image.

Staying away from all things Jim Carrey is what cures my depression. I've loathed him since 'In Living Color'.

Posted by: hangin in herndon | March 18, 2008 1:15 PM

"I simply greeted both actresses with joy and open arms, which is the way I would greet anyone I'm happy to meet," Busey said. "Everyone has experienced a handshake or hug which has turned awkward, and this was no different."

So Busey's a hugger? Oh well. To be fair, I can't argue with his second point; been there, done that.

Posted by: 23112 | March 18, 2008 1:25 PM

wpb,
I have to agree that does sound like a boy's name.

Posted by: petal | March 18, 2008 2:17 PM

Dude, you spelled Soleil Moon Frye wrong. Twice.

Posted by: cat | March 18, 2008 2:27 PM

To be fair to Larry (I know, I know) the information is coming from his testimony at an inquest in the Bahamas.

Posted by: Anonymous | March 18, 2008 3:25 PM

Heather Mills needs representation in the United States for...what exactly? *sniffle* And I'd so hoped that maybe she'd take her ill-gotten millions and vanish from our collective purview. Yeah, I know, wishful thinking...
