"Celine Dion skewered for shaggy legs."

Liz Kelly, you need to insert "not literally" in there somewhere or you will continue to disappoint your readers.

Posted by: byoolin | March 12, 2008 8:27 AM

If Jodie's stalker/bomber is convicted, they should have him bunk with Hinckley. It's so hard to meet someone in prison with similar interests.

("He said, 'Kid, what did you get?', and I said, 'Nothing, I had to pay ten dollars and pick up the garbage,' and he said, 'No, what are you *in* for?' and I said, 'Littering,' and they all moved away from me on the bench there until I said, '...and creating a nuisance,' and they all came back we had a grand old time, talking about mother-rapin' and father-stabbin' and all kinds of mean, nasty, ugly, horrible things...")

I always knew that Mary Anne and Gilligan were made for one another.

Posted by: byoolin | March 12, 2008 8:56 AM

I'm curious to see the next Rambo movie, if only to see how much damage he can do in the nursing home.

Posted by: byoolin | March 12, 2008 8:59 AM

Yes, there's something screwy going on with the timestamp here. Apparently the time change was actually a conspiracy designed to throw off Celebritology commenters.

We're working on it.

Posted by: Liz Kelly | March 12, 2008 9:03 AM

That's the same thing I told my pharmacist when I tried to renew my Vicodin prescription, "I'm just trying to get into character, man!"
Actually, Hugh's children sound wonderful. They're "quite sniffy" about LA? And why not? It's also funny that they'll consider moving to the US if "House continues to be a success." I think he should have moved over about two years ago.

Posted by: methinks | March 12, 2008 9:06 AM

Alicia Silverstone should be happy she had work. I haven't liked her since she snubbed Elizabeth Hasselbeck on the view. Not that I love Elizabeth, I just thought it was rude.

Apparently she is clueless and thinks she is a big star.

Posted by: Irishgirl | March 12, 2008 9:28 AM

DW, there are plenty of studies featuring veggie nonagenerians, too. I think the moral of the story is: do what you think is best because the meat lobby (or anyone else) is capable of trotting out a study to support whatever will benefit their interests.

Viva tofu!

Posted by: Liz Kelly | March 12, 2008 9:30 AM

Did anyone else notice that Celine Dion was being defended in the comments below that story by a person identifying him/herself as "angry blackman."

...but to pick on the white lady about her furry legs shall not be allowed....what would Huey Newton and Bobby Seale say about that??

Posted by: sunnydaze | March 12, 2008 9:31 AM

I love it that the bit about Rambo is in the Crime Watch section because it is a crime the Rambo remake and what he did to Rocky.

"Fergie says she was once mistaken for a homeless person" return the articles of clothing to the Olsen twins and that won't happen again.

Posted by: petal | March 12, 2008 9:55 AM

"Sylvester Stallone planning another "Rambo" sequel?" I loved that this was under "Crime Watch", because it would be a crime if there were another sequel.

Posted by: jake e. poo | March 12, 2008 9:56 AM

I just want to see if I'm in the future too. I just hope my eyes don't start bleeding...

Posted by: jes | March 12, 2008 9:57 AM

I was going to give Alicia Silverstone an attagirl for dropping out, but then I read the article. God forbid she gets overshadowed by someone else.

Posted by: surlychick | March 12, 2008 9:58 AM

In the future? Quick -- send me the lotto numbers and I'll split it!!

Posted by: ncc | March 12, 2008 9:58 AM

I'm not in the future. Can you tell me if I'll like it when I get there?

Posted by: jes | March 12, 2008 9:58 AM

Um, Liz Kelly, WTF?

Petal, surlychick and jake e. poo appear to be posting from THE FUTURE.

Posted by: byoolin | March 12, 2008 10:01 AM

This happens twice a year byoolin. not all servers are currently in sync. methinks just posted after you, but that post timed in correctly at 9:06. This will probably post at 10:11

Posted by: omni | March 12, 2008 10:11 AM

Reading the comments today is like watching a Tarantino movie.

Posted by: michael | March 12, 2008 10:12 AM

"If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat," McCartney tells Us. "That's the single most important thing you could do.

But wouldn't the world be overrun with animals then? And wouldn't all the poo create health hazards like in the Ganges in India? I'm not against vegetarianism by any means, but the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU COULD DO? I think that's a stretch

Posted by: Hyperbolic Paul | March 12, 2008 10:14 AM

Note to byoolin from the future. Do NOT use that stall in the loo.

Posted by: 23112 | March 12, 2008 10:15 AM

the day isn't going any faster for either future or present petal. Bummer.

Posted by: petal | March 12, 2008 10:16 AM

(sing song voice) I'm in the future, I'm in the future...
It's fun! But it looks a lot like now.

Posted by: methinks | March 12, 2008 10:18 AM

I can always count on the usual posters to brighten my day. You guys crack me up.

Posted by: no_bs4me | March 12, 2008 10:18 AM

This is for Liz with a tie in to McCartney.
Did you see the big study on long life on the news Monday? They studied thousands of individuals that lived past 90 to see what they had in common. One of the only things they had in common was that NONE were vegetarians.
So the moral of the story, eat meat, be healthy, and live a long live.
viva meat!

Posted by: DW | March 12, 2008 10:24 AM

I wanted to go to Yale because Jodie Foster was there. Then that Hinkley b@stard had to go and ruin it for all us respectful polite stalkers.

I'm still upset she never asked me to father any of her children:

http://livebythefoma.blogspot.com/2006/01/celebrity-babby-daddy-wannabe.html

Jessica Alba snubbed me too.

Posted by: yellojkt | March 12, 2008 10:27 AM

Why is the Laurie/Vicodin story big news now? I saw that reported in EW at least a year ago. (As I recall, he said it was rather pleasant and a little floaty.)

Posted by: 51 | March 12, 2008 10:27 AM

Ohhh, so that's why they really stayed on the island.

Nice photo of Miss Ferrera, even if it does catch a weird angle on her legs. She rocks that dress.

Posted by: EricS | March 12, 2008 10:31 AM

And the fact that the comments are posting in some kind of time warp is really bothering me! Augh!!! I'm stuck in the present time. Why can't I be in the future, like Methinks?

Posted by: Liz Kelly | March 12, 2008 10:31 AM

Alicia Silverstone for Brit is the worst deal since the Falcons traded Brett Favre for a draft pick.

Posted by: Paul | March 12, 2008 10:35 AM

Didn't the Falcons use that pick to take Brit, too? Girl hasn't thrown an NFL pass yet.

Posted by: byoolin | March 12, 2008 10:44 AM

Now we're all in the future. That's an hour of my life I won't get back.

Posted by: byoolin | March 12, 2008 10:48 AM

Liz,
I made ratatouille and brown rice for dinner last night honoring my husband's request for a couple (or more) meatless meals each week. It was (if I may say so) off the chain. However I'm a celiac and already had to give up "real" bread, pasta, beer, baked goods of every stripe. Raised as a Catholic and now a celiac, I think I've given up enough in life. Meat is staying on the shopping list, but I do love the tofu reuben at The Grit (an awesome vegetarian restaurant in Athens, GA--home of R.E.M...sorry, it's a law. We have to say that.)

Posted by: methinks | March 12, 2008 10:57 AM

In the future? Quick -- send me the lotto numbers and I'll split it!!

Posted by: ncc | March 12, 2008 10:59 AM

methinks my friend has that disease and he was sick for a long time before they even knew what was wrong with him.

Really, you have to eat meat if you have the celiac!

Posted by: Irishgirl | March 12, 2008 11:00 AM

In the future, no one shaves their legs! Celine Dion is huge here.

Posted by: methinks | March 12, 2008 11:01 AM

Apparently, there is a new way to rate your celebrity quotient -- how long does it take for your mug shot to show up in the news:

While the arrest is occuring -- WHOA, HUGE celebrity

Within 24 hours of arrest -- Big Celebrity

Within a Week of Arrest -- We still remember who you are

Several Months after the arrest, you have plead guilty, and served your sentence --- Who again?????

Posted by: ep | March 12, 2008 11:03 AM

Bold prediction: methinks will win Comment Of The Week when she posts her 11:01.

Posted by: byoolin | March 12, 2008 11:09 AM

methinks, isn't Athens also the home of the B-52s? I always think of them and R.E.M. together in that respect.

Alicia Silverstone will love the future. She's not really one for personal hygiene, from what I've heard.

Posted by: surlychick | March 12, 2008 11:13 AM

Being in a different time zone is really throwing things off temporally. I'm in the future and also the past at the same time.

Posted by: michael | March 12, 2008 11:15 AM

"replaced by older, horsey faced actress Hillary Swank..."

Ouch!

Posted by: Lohan story | March 12, 2008 11:24 AM

"Greetings, my friend. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future." -- Criswell.

Good luck reorienting yourselves temporally and be sure to send yourselves a postcard. :)

Posted by: CentrevilleMom | March 12, 2008 11:24 AM

MASSIVE props for the Plan 9 quote! COTD material.

Posted by: 23112 | March 12, 2008 11:36 AM

"But wouldn't the world be overrun with animals then?"

Um...what? You do know that animals are bred and raised for meat, right? If people stopped eating them, they'd stop breeding them. I really hope you were joking.

And there are several recent studies showing that switching to a veg diet reduces your carbon footprint more than switching to a hybrid car. Way more resources are used to raise animals than plants, so it can have a huge impact.

Posted by: julia | March 12, 2008 11:44 AM

OK, so now we know whatever happened to Mary Anne. But what about The Professor? Didn't they have a thing going on? Is he now in rehab?

Posted by: possum | March 12, 2008 11:45 AM

I've heard that giving up meat even one day a week can make a difference. I really like vegetarian food anyway!

Posted by: Sigh | March 12, 2008 11:53 AM

Boo to Alicia Silverstone. I don't like Brit or Elizabeth Hasselbeck, but she sounds extremely egotistical. As if her appearance on HIMYM was going to be a huge news event in the absence of Brit's appearance. What was the last thing that she starred in since Clueless and an Aerosmith video?

Posted by: meg | March 12, 2008 12:01 PM

Celine didn't shave her legs cuz she wasn't going to have "ze sexy time" with Rene that night - OBVS!!!

Posted by: Ciao Bambina | March 12, 2008 12:02 PM

hey surly chick, i wasn't ignoring your comment. in fact i answered it twice but my comment wasn't posted. big props to athens reader for taking care of that for me. are we still in the time warp?

Posted by: methinks | March 12, 2008 12:09 PM

Um,let's see meg. Just off the top of my head:

Silence Becomes You
Beauty Shop
Love's Labour's Lost
Blast from the Past
Batman & Robin
The Babysitter

A quick check on IMDB reveals a few more movies and several appearences on scripted TV shows.

Posted by: omni | March 12, 2008 12:45 PM

methinks, isn't Athens also the home of the B-52s? I always think of them and R.E.M. together in that respect.

Surly chick -- yes, B-52s, R.E.M., Widespread Panic, Dead Confederates, and about 1,522 other bands, some of which you'll hear of, I think. And of course, The Grit, which is awesome, as Methinks pointed out. :)

Posted by: Athens reader | March 12, 2008 12:54 PM

So I'm wondering if the Mary Ann character on Gilligan's Island was originally named Mary Jane. Or was The Professor character previously known as Dr. Feelgood? And what about the rumor that Thurston Howell III was named MC Funkmeister Fred in the pilot show?

Posted by: MisterBear | March 12, 2008 1:02 PM

No problem, methinks. The time warp is throwing me off as well.

I'd love to get to Athens some day to check out the music scene- sounds awesome.

Posted by: surlychick | March 12, 2008 1:03 PM

It looks like America has lost a good bit of weight. This makes me happy (good for her!) and sad (yet another average sized woman has to drop weight to survive in show biz).

Posted by: still | March 12, 2008 1:20 PM

"yet another average sized woman has to drop weight to survive in show biz"

Yeah. Couldn't possibly have to do with wanting to be healthier.

Posted by: 23112 | March 12, 2008 1:41 PM

So, Nicole Ritchie and Brittany Murphy lost the weight to be healthier?

Posted by: still | March 12, 2008 3:15 PM

Re: Athens bands -- don't forget the Woggles.

Wow, I hope she has room on her shelf for her oscar! Sorry but someone had to say it.

Posted by: Irishgirl | March 12, 2008 3:44 PM

Never heard of the Woggles, but their MySpace page says they're from Atlanta. But if they had been from Athens, i wouldn't be surprised -- so many bands here!

Posted by: Athens reader | March 12, 2008 4:15 PM

Good call on The Woggles, Liz Kelly.
Athens has a great, rich music history.

Posted by: methinks | March 12, 2008 4:23 PM

You know, if you just glance quickly at the headline at the top of this entry, it looks like it says that LiLo lost a Yodeling contract, which would have been a really interesting story.

Posted by: byoolin | March 12, 2008 4:54 PM

Hillary Swank "horsey faced"? What are they, nuts? As usual, one of the most elegant and beautiful women on the red carpet this year, and a physique maintained by hard core martial arts. Next to lohan's sallow decrepitude, Swank is a goddess.
