Comment Box: The Naked Truth About Miley Cyrus

It's no surprise that the Miley Cyrus photo scandal is the talk du jour. Everyone -- from The Post Style section to mommy blogs to Jamie Lee Curtis -- is adding voice to the question of whether semi-topless Vanity Fair pix (released on the heels of last week's leaked Miley bra shots) of the 15-year-old Disney star have gone too far.
In an utterly unscientific insta-poll conducted here yesterday, 72 percent of Celebritology readers think Miley Cyrus and her parents/management are using the Vanity Fair photo kerfuffle -- and their buyers' remorse -- as calculated plays for press. So, because we're so easily led down the path of manufactured starlet scandals, I thought we'd delve just a little deeper into the Great Miley Scandal of '08.

Left: Annie Leibovitz's portrait of Miley Cyrus. Right: The June cover. (Images courtesy Vanity Fair)
Some good, meaty commenting went on in the blog yesterday -- where you weighed the relative newsworthiness of the pictures, argued over exactly what defines "racy" photos and pointed the finger of blame at everyone from Miley to her parents to Vanity Fair. Said reader methinks:
"Vanity Fair may have 'tarted' Miley up but her parents were right there, consenting to it. VF is off the hook as far as I'm concerned. The Cyrus family has only themselves to blame for their 'embarrassment.'"
Though, in today's Post article by Teresa Wiltz, feminist scholar Camille Paglia places the blame squarely on photographer Annie Leibowitz:
"They knew perfectly well it would cause a storm. I'm so tired of Annie Leibovitz."
Meanwhile reader Sigh chalked the "misstep" up to growing pains as Cyrus outgrows her Disney-fied image:
"I think she's trying to push between her wholesome appearance and growing up into her own person."
Commenter RachelT, though, thinks Miley is knowlingly trying out different personas -- a natural part of growing up:
"Maybe this is the only statement of a tween queen: 'I'm young and I want it all, so I'll dress any way I can for who ever is out there all for maximum publicity, until I figure out who I am.'"
When asked this morning what the ultimate fallout for Cyrus will be, child and teen development expert Dr. Robyn J.A. Silverman (who wrote about Cyrus in her blog yesterday) said:
"...all in all, it will eventually blow over and be remembered as 'The Miley Misstep.' Rest assured though, while the public will swing in her direction, they have a short fuse and a long memory. They'll be waiting for her to mess up -- hoping she won't but expecting that she will. With one eye on her and another looking for her replacement, one more misstep and it's move over Miley."

One can only wonder how many of the parents of Disney's stable of up-and-coming 'tween stars are taking notes from Mileygate on how best to position their prepubescent child in today's global entertainment marketplace.
--------------
Step 12: Arrange shoot with Annie Lebowitz
Step 13: Plan PR strategy around the theme "I had no idea!" Act shocked.
-------------
I shudder at the idea of Moms and Dads of budding eight-to-12-year-old starlets planning similar career paths for their daughters.

When in doubt, ask Camille Paglia what she thinks about all this. Please. Could we be more generic?

Big whup. Wasn't Miss Trainwreck a Mousketeer? And wasn't Marilyn Chambers the symbol of purity & cleanliness on a soapbox?

The photo is beautiful and artistic and it's what you get from A.L. No idea why the kid says she's "so embarrased". No idea why folks are outraged. The world is facing a food crisis and we are in the middle of an oil crisis and this is what's occupying our brain waves?
Posted by: FashionistaMomDC | April 29, 2008 10:47 AM
Now Miley's people were claiming Mommy and Daddy were nowhere around when the topless photos were shot. Uh-huh. Right. Except everyone else involved says they were there. Also, the pics were shot with a digital camera, with approval given right then and there.
This is one of those things that sounded like a good idea at the time and blew up in their faces.

I have to say one thing on the Miley ruckus though. Okay we've been overwhelmed by "fashionista" photos extremely similar to this one; however, those young women present an unrealistic view for girls. What I think we should applaud here is that ms. hannah is exposing a normal teenage girl with a normal body that isn't overtly plasticized or even anorexic, but highly more successful than those "pimped" sticks. So its alright to expose a young girl who is extremely unrealistic to the masses by plastering them in ads, on tv or billboards, but wrong to present a realistic view of an actual young girl. Now that is a sick sick view.
So take that Barbara WaWa and her viewables!
Posted by: poetdc | April 29, 2008 10:54 AM
First of all, Annie Leibowitz is a genius photographer.
Second, the fact that the kid is a kid means it's up to her parents/guardians to make business decisions on her behalf.
Third, if the parents' business decisions were poor, it's on them: not on the kid, not on the photographer, not on the magazine.
Fourth, I think the photos of the kid with her dad are more suggestive than the one with the smudgy lipstick and her back and rib bones showing.
Fifth, can we now get over ourselves?
Posted by: Fairfax | April 29, 2008 11:09 AM
I used to work in the emergency room and when I saw the pictures of Miley, I thought she looked a battered girl than any kind of sex object; maybe Annie was making a comment about Hollywood Teens.

This is going to be one of those days, isn't it? When the post is linked from the front page and everybody and their brother drops in. I bet at 3 we get a big influx of posts that are half abbreviations.

Here's my armchair celebritologist theory on what happened to cause this kerfuffle:
Pix taken and everyone (VF, Miley, her parents, AL) liked them and approved of them.
Disney people found out too late, did NOT like them and gave Miley & Co an earful.
Remorse and embarassment by Miley & Co. set in as they try & backtrack from the responsibility.

When I look at Annie Liebowitz's photo of Miley, I see a 19th century street urchin, exploited, but fending for herself in true Dickensian fashion. The image is artistic, but not beautiful. The portrait is revealing and deserves to be published.

I thought the official dress code of a pedophile victim was poufy, done-up hair, a unibrow, and a prairie dress, preferably in blue.
Miley looks nothing like that.

I wonder where it will all end? Where will all of this lead us? It really is stupid that Ms Cyrus can capture so many of us like this. Aren't there more important things in life than to know what celebraties are doing? Who cares for one and for 2, it really is NONE OF OUR BUSINESS!
Posted by: knew1 | April 29, 2008 11:35 AM
This morning on NPR (yeah I know) it was suggested that this is a calculated move by Cyrus and her people, since she is outgrowing her fan base of 10 y/o girls. Does anyone remember the tarty Rolling Stone cover Brit Brit did when she was about 16 or 17? 10 - 12 year olds are fickle, as soon as the next Disney wunderkind comes along they'll flock to him/her. The Cyrus family knows this.

Miley Is 15 years Old and she is nearly Illegal and she didnt show anything like her Breasts so its not that bad it was only her Back and that was it but i did hear about her showing her bra and people Can Edit them so she gets into trouble

For the record (and because I know readers like knew1 care so deeply) I don't personally think VF tarted MC up in that photo.
I actually believe the photo is the most interesting and beautiful picture I've seen of MC and, trust me, I've never thought of her as beautiful.
I wish Annie Liebowitz would take a portrait of me! It would be my honor to have her take my picture.
Posted by: methinks | April 29, 2008 11:41 AM
Then she'll be grossed out because men are looking at her "like that."
Posted by: Stick | April 29, 2008 11:42 AM
In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with these pictures because it is showing nothing of the nude parts of her body. And what's wrong with a picture like that? Nothing!! I think that the adults are the only people who truely have a problem with these pictures, because they are thinking that their kids look up to her as a role model. Well, sorry but she is a young adult just like the rest of us teenagers. So maybe the little kids need to choose somebody else as their role model!!!! =]

People Need To Wise Up
Im 14 Shes My Idol
I Look Up To Her
So What She Did A Photoshoot Nude
She Was Covered Like
Seriously
Its Not Like She Did It For A Playboy Magazine
It Would Me Different Then
And Parents Need to wise up To
At Least She Has Sense Not Taken Drugs And Getting Preganat
Parent Are Saying To Her Your Nat A Good Role Modal For Doing That But I Say Differently She Is The Only Senseable Young Celeb Whos Is Not Doing A Brittany Spears Or A Paris Hilton
What Would Want Her To Do
A Photoshoot With No Cloths But Covered Up
Or Taken Drugs And Drinked And Getting Pregant You Deciced???
Its Not Like Shes Gone To Tak Her Clothes Off Anywhere Or Everywhere Or On Set Or On A Live Tour. So You Choose Her Or Brittany Spears For Your Daugther Role Model

I think that the picture of MC was very well done and I can understand her and her parents liking it. But.....
Would I want that picture of my daughter on the cover of a national magazine? No way. It's one thing having a picture such as that taken for your personal use but another to have it shown around the world.
Actually, the one with her dad and her was worse. When I saw that picture, my first gut reaction to it was Ick. That's the one they should be embarassed about.
Posted by: One-mom | April 29, 2008 11:51 AM
jake,
You make my mind reel remembering all the photo spreads Brit did in her jailbait days. A coworker and I once deconstructed all the subliminal sexuality on her first album cover. That hem was not turned up by accident.
Her handlers spent a lot of effort treading that little girl/Lolita fine line. And then when she turned eighteen she just dove off the deep end.
Miley's implied nudity is a little creepy no matter how artistic it is. It's always sexier not showing instead of showing and everyone on that shoot knew it.
Posted by: yellojkt | April 29, 2008 11:52 AM
FYI..That's Bobby Kennedy on the cover, not Miley Cyrus
Posted by: | April 29, 2008 11:55 AM
What worries me is not that Miley's fan base is being led astray, but that it seems to be totally illiterate.
Posted by: Curmudgeon | April 29, 2008 11:56 AM
Miley's biggest fan is in school. School computers don't block WAPO. It's a news site.
All the ones who say she looks exploited have hit the nail on the head. Once again Annie Leibowitz gets right to the soul of her subject. How perfect, everyone thought these would be provocative photos that would raise eyebrows. Annie L. then does her magic to show what is truly happening to this poor child.
Posted by: ep | April 29, 2008 11:57 AM
Maybe I'm becoming jaded, but I don't really find that photo to be shocking or scandalous at all. And I consider myself to be pretty sensitive to the oversexualization of young girls, which I think is a problem. I hate that we live in such a prurient society that nudity is automatically associated with sex, rather than appreciation of the human form. In this case, it's not even nudity!! She's not posed suggestively, she's not showing any body parts that would get her arrested. A media storm is raised that forces a 15 year old girl to say she is embarassed for being secure enough in her own skin to pose matter-of-factly and artistically and then we wonder why girls have self-esteem and body image issues?!? Good grief, aren't there real scandals to talk about?

Posted by: Carly | April 29, 2008 12:10 PM
This is a made up issue. She is showing less skin then most 15 year olds on the beach. However, the gossip culture needs food and young girls are the tasty ones. Since Paris and Lindsey and Brit and Jamie and Vanessa and Nicole etc. are keeping faily low profiles and since Miley is bigger than any of them it is time to play Gotcha with Ms. Cyrus. I don't blame, Annie L or VF or The Cyrus family, I blame us, the people of these United States not for the pics but for the absurd over reaction to them.
Posted by: Random | April 29, 2008 12:10 PM
I wish everyone would LEAVE MILEY ALONE. She is growing up and such a young girl. Everyone makes mistakes and I blame the photographer for this one. Miley is a good role model for all young girls.
Posted by: Megan | April 29, 2008 12:12 PM
First can i ask when did dads, moms, brothers, sister...stop acting as role models, are we that lazy as a society that we rely on Artists to foster our children's Morales and beliefs? Shouldn't your role model be someone who is close to you, someone REAL, not someone who is putting on a show or acting? And then the first time she does something that isn't in front of the TV or millions of screaming fans,( something real) not scripted she is now considered a bad influence. I never once saw parents screaming in anger when Marky mark, or Usher or LL cool J dropped there pants or tore off there shirts, never once did i hear "OH my god, what example is he setting for me son"?? OR "What message is he trying to send to my daughter"! I have seen girls wear alot less on red carpet events. I do blame alot of the media for this, because honestly if it hadn't be played on the news over and over and over, how many 4-10 year old's do you know that are out buying Vanity Fair? So how many would really even know about it? And if for some reason the did see it, Is it really that big of a deal that we might have to spend alittle time with our children answering some questions??

Posted by: unconcerned nonparent | April 29, 2008 12:14 PM
why is her hair all messed up and her make-up all smudged looking. looks to me like she just 'sexed her brains out.' this has a soft-core child-porn aspect to it, no doubt. and the idea that these girls don't know what they're doing is a lie. ask any high school teacher, i think they can tell you that a 15 year old girl knows exactly what she's doing when she poses for a camera like that. and her parents know, too, which makes it much, much sicker. all these 5 and 6 year old girls running wild in schools across the nation, wearing their hannah montana clothes and booksacks will imitate her. jamie lynn spears was 16, this one's 15. what kind of role models are they? is the usa a pedo-nation now? bottom line is this, disney needs to terminate this girl's job. it's later than we think, america.

I can't disagree strongly enough with the message above that the photo isn't suggestive. A young teen appearing naked , wrapped in a sheet with bed tousled hair and smudged lipstick - it's the definition of suggestive. I am sick and tired of young girls being displayed in sexual ways. I firmly believe this was a calculated move by the Cyrus family/handlers to start the process of transitioning her from a "Disney" star to a mainstream one. Just like Britney, Lindsey Lohan, etc. The sad fact is someone decided that we need to sexualize these young girls so they can be perceived as "adult" stars. Why are we then so surprised that they are so screwed up in their late teens early twenties. We have objectified them - I don't care if you can see this in Vogue - we shouldn't. And the idea that this is no big deal because most teens are doing drugs, sexually promiscuous etc. is ridiculous. We continue to accept that it's okay, it could be worse and it's the GIRLS who suffer!
Posted by: Debbie | April 29, 2008 12:16 PM
I think they should sue the photographer for false info. When I was younger, I had a friend who was artsy take some pictures of me and before I knew it, she was trying to make me take my clothes off saying it was ARTISTIC! I was young as well and did enjoy being told how beautiful I looked, which Annie probably told her over and over. I do not think the photos are that damaging to her image, however b/c she is not naked. You just see her back. She also, in my opinion, looks terrible. Her skin tone and makeup job is just awful!
Posted by: syacrnaihm | April 29, 2008 12:17 PM
I can see both sides of this
20 years ago, I was a 15-year-old girl with lousy judgment. I can absolutely understand how Miley Cyrus could see the photos in the camera or in proof form and think they were fine, and then later, upon reflection, realize they were sexier than she intended. Also, they may have been cropped and 'shopped a little.
In yesterday's post, we saw what they looked like in a more raw format. We could see a backdrop, her pants, her parents, and the fact that she wasn't in bed. But as they ran in the magazine, she looks like she's in bed. That may have given her pause -- *after* approval.
Or it could be that she's realized, a little late that she needs to stir the pot to save her reputation. Who knows.
Posted by: other liz | April 29, 2008 12:17 PM
I don't like this photo, not because I think Miley was taken advantage of, but because it's just not a flattering picture. She looks like she just woke up from a bad heroine-induced dream.
Other than that, I don't think this picture would have caused any sort of scandal if she hadn't come out and declared being ashamed of the picture first. Also, can she really say she's ashamed of a parentally supervised studio photo after exposing her bra and breasts on the internet? Hyprocrite!

Oh h3, I had faint hopes that you would be wrong. IN retrospect, it seems your prediction for a 3:00 p.m. wave of incoherent posts from tweeners was optimistic. It appears that the tweeners are looking at the web during study hall or lunch hour.
Having seen a couple of Annie Lebowitz's exhibitions (not exhibitionists), I agree with Methinks. Lebowitz is in the first rank of professional photographers working today. The most disturbing Lebowitz photos I have seen are those of her long-time partner, Susan Sontag, laid out in the casket after losing a battle to cancer. I nearly cried. It took guts to take those shots.
The Miley Cyrus "controversey" is little more than a chicken-sheet flap [pun intended] from the Disney publicity office, who fear that this is an impending repeat of Disney's It Girl of the last decade, Miss Train Wreck Spears.

I've got two residents in my house who love Hannah Montana. To them, Miley crossed the line when she wore that designer gown on the Oscar red carpet. They were both shocked to see her dressed like a grown-up. Viewership of HM has dropped off at our house.
Perhaps I need to show them pix of the Jonas Brothers in suits as this weekend's Correspondents Dinner. Could Annie Leibowitz take on Zach and Cody next? Please?

My friend told me this happened. I half didn't believe him and I half did. I knew the rule, Every Disney star goes corrupt. I didn't believe him because he said "Miley Cyrus posed naked for explicit photos with her dad." and I knew Miley Cyrus was not yet 18. I watch Hannah Montana with my sister sometimes, and when I heard about this wanted to know if she did. So I searched it to decide if it was a big deal.
It's not. Vanessa Hudgens was a big deal. Sure Miley probably shouldn't of done it, But it least it's not some sort of Hardcore XXX Porno with animals, And maybe some girl on girl action. People get too hyped up over something like this. Even if it was connected to sex, Sex is a natural thing. It's how we live, how we survive. Without sex we would fall out of existence. Without sex, You and me and him or her or Miley Cyrus would never be born to even do some nude photo shoot that people would get all excited about. The government is corrupt. Sex is natural people. Get over it.

It's a shame that the WP would even take up type space for this Jerry Springer mentality nonsense.
Young girls show more skin than that at the beach. There's nothing obscene or even remotely wrong with this photo shoot. The people that have a problem with this are probably closet pedos.
I'm so sick of these sanctimonious "parents" complaining about it that I'm close to hurling on my keyboard. If they only knew what their precious little teenage daughters are doing when they're out having dinner with friends....
Every young woman wants to feel beautiful. That's a woman's right. And beautiful she is.
F*ing puritan hypocrites.
Unbelievable.

I am so aggrevated that all of society puts this on a 15 year old girl and her decisions! Where are the adults in this and why wouldn't they be expected to be held accountable for their actions? Kudos to anonymous 11:55, who notes that it's Booby Kennedy on the VF cover, not Miley Cyrus.
It is also interesting to note that early in the online article descriving the VF shoot, Miley Cyrus exclaims that her favorite television show is Sex in the City....you know, the show that freely discusses genitalia size, sex toys and the like.
Seems like more than a small credibility gap here, doesn't it?

You knew exactly what you were doing. So, take responsibilty. It's really obvious in your performances how you enjoy dancing sensually and love the attention you get. You are not an example for the teens. Just like other pop queen idols, you are an embarrasment to society.

I think it's fine that she might be going through a stage of just trying to find herself, she should have kept in mind though that she is still at this point someone little girls 8 and 12 are still looking up to. Plus we all know that there are many other ways to take a classy, artistic photo, I really don't think that pic. was either one. And quite honestly even though she's not exposing any graphic body parts, to me she actually looks a little raunchy with the wet hair look, that bright lipstick, and bare back pose. They could of even done a softer look to the picture in itself.

There is nothing wrong with this photograph. It is artistically done, obeys the law, and promotes her further. We can only hope Vanity Fair will continue to produce these so called "controversial" images.
What is everybody complaining about?
Another user commented "If it were my daughter... no way." Well if it were my daughter, I'd go the same route as her parents and publish the picture. Good job. Any parent that is upset over this needs to take a serious look back into reality. Need I remind you; your daughter, of any age, is fully capable of producing far more controversial images, and publishing them, by herself.
Use your time for something better than concerning yourself with celebrities, fix the gas prices or the economy. Do something. Get over it. Its done.

the problem is that she is only 15 years old. the photo is not a tasteful, 19th century style work of 'art.' as a previous poster pointed out, the girl's hair is all messed up and her make up is smudged - that's very 'suggestive' to say the least - plus she appears naked in bed. if she was 18, this might be acceptable enough, given what age of consent laws in the usa. i remember something about some provacative internet photos that just came out last week featuring her as well - so this is a pattern. this is not good role-modeling for young girls (and boys) and so of course disney should let her go. there are plenty of other girls who can sing and dance who would agree to at least act good in front of the camera in exchange for $1 billion dollars - which is what this 15 year old tart is worth.
Posted by: art | April 29, 2008 12:36 PM
A. She's a teen, not a tween.
B. You've got a dirty mind if you find that picture sexual. It's beautiful.

"Kudos to anonymous 11:55, who notes that it's Booby Kennedy on the VF cover, not Miley Cyrus."
You said booby. Teeheehee

This is the most disturbing image I have seen in 56 years. I do not understand the new urge for a 15 year old lady to pose with out any clothes on. My grandchildren enjoy her show, but this may change everything
Posted by: ewww1 | April 29, 2008 12:27 PM
***************
The Miley picture is "the most disturbing image" you've seen in 56 years?
So, by my calculations, you went blind in '52 and regained your sight - uh, carry the one, uh - this morning?
Posted by: byoolin | April 29, 2008 12:38 PM
She has a bra on, that's semi-topless ? I've seen bikinis more revealing on young kids. What's the big deal ?
Posted by: BigDeal? | April 29, 2008 12:38 PM
I really don't understand what the big deal is with the photos. It isn't like she was topless, skipping around the set.
We clearly see in the photos of behind the scenes that she was covered.
I don't think she should feel like she has to apologize for anything. When you are at a shoot for hours, looking at each photo taken, and your parents are there, you should be able to gauge how you will feel ahead of time.
And besides, if she went to an awards show in a backless dress, or went to a beach in a bathing suit/bikini, wouldn't that be just as bad?
Posted by: Ohyouknow | April 29, 2008 12:39 PM
I agree with curmudgeon, the scariest thing about today's youth in not the way they dress and sex themselves up. (Miley's pictures are not only tame compared to what you see on the beach, they are tame to what you see 12-18 year olds wearing at the mall) No, the scariest thing is how poor their writing is.
White collar employers are going to be in serious trouble in a few years trying to find literate workers.
Posted by: dw | April 29, 2008 12:40 PM
Booby Kennedy! lol. I didn't even notice that the first time. Maybe that could be Miley's new nickname. Or, wait: Halle Berry's.
Posted by: h3 | April 29, 2008 12:40 PM
Honestly, they are artistic photos; however we have to take into consideration the fact that she is 15!! For crying out loud, she and her parents need to understand what kind of an age group she is in, and what kind of an age group is paying attention to her. With her other pictures, she is basically promoting the fact that it's okay for kids under 18 to be promiscuous. Celebrities may have their private lives, but they knew what they were getting into in the first place, so they have to be even more careful than normal people. So since she wanted to be a starlet, then she has to get her head on straight and realize that the publicized life is what she chose, so stick to the rules.
Posted by: de2 | April 29, 2008 12:40 PM
You people play into all the hype and it's just what the Billy R Cyrus family and VF wanted.
If the press would just make a comment and then drop the issue, there wouldn't be any of this crap going on. But this is what you people thrive on.
It's just another Britney story.

So dont be trying to judge her she is fine her dad oh ok he let her maybe you didnt think that miley/hannah didnt feel comfortable about it and just went along so she could make him happy (photographer). so thats it deal with IT.

This supposedly "racy" photo showed much less than the average girl shows at the beach in a bikini. In fact, I thought they were quite tastefully done as are most of what Ms. Liebowitz does.
Just another example of reporters creating a storm in a teacup to avoid doing real journalism. Where is the 5 page special report on the economy and possible solutions? Comon people, let's do some real work.

Why does anyone care what Camille Paglia thinks?
As for the photograph, I've seen more skin at Wal-Mart. She's 15; it doesn't surprise me that she'd start trying to break out of the HM mold. It's much ado about nothing.
The real scandal is Miley Cyrus's seven-figure deal to write her memoirs.

You know, whether you think it's appropriate or not, you have to admit that the picture is compelling. And isn't that what art is supposed to be? Art should generate dialogue and feelings and clearly it has in this scenario. So, my hat is off to Annie Leibovitz. Once again, you've made people talk.

My fortune cookie just gave me this message: "You are admired for your impeccable tastes."
The Miley Cyrus photos aroused in me neither ire nor desire. It is a technically competent photograph but otherwise unremarkable. (Admit it, guys - who else had to resort to the Bobby Kennedy picture to achieve, er, "satisfaction" this morning? Thought so.)
Also, lucky lottery numbers are 1, 9, 24, 44, 46 and 49.

If she were any other kid, it wouldn't matter at all. The photos were "artistic." They weren't at all shocking. But the fact is that what this kid does influences other children's behavior. That's why parents have a right to be outraged by anything suggestive she is doing for profit.

why can Texas take the FLDS kids away from their parents, yet it's okay to promote a 15 year old as a sex object without anyone protesting the legality of it? Perhaps we should give the FLDS kids back, or else, we should take Miley and Jamie Spears away from their parents. I'm no prude, but there seems to be a double standard here somewhere.

Oh!My Question is Why? I have a 5 year old who really likes you, we watch your show everyday. She loves it. I watch the news that Morning and seen your Picture. My head went down. I had to explane to my Daughter why you did what you did. I wouldn't want my daughter to do that. It not a good role model for her. As a Parent, I had to stand my believes. I don't agree what you did. I just think as you being on the Disney you channel. Alots of kids age 5 on up ,whatch you. I am going to Pray that you make better decision in your life. when you do always ask yourself. WWJD!!! what Would Jesus Do? As example would he want you to take those pictures? This article has sure brought the child pimps and others out from under their rocks (or out of hiding in Eldorado, Texas). These photos were completely inappropriate. I don't think that enough blame has been laid at the feet of Annie Leibowitz, but apparently this type of work appeals to a lot of undesirables in our society. This confirms that parents aren't being protective enough.

I'm amused by Disney's comment that Vanity Fair was exploiting Miley for the purpose of selling more magazines. Isn't that what Disney's all about? Miley and Raven and the Jonas' and etc. etc. etc. are making the Big "D" gazillons of dollars with tours and albums and other junk. It's all about teen sex albeit on a very PG level. You want wholesome? Turn on "Leave it to Beaver".

What's wrong with this photo is a prime example of what's wrong with the way people raise their children. Parent's are preaching "Don't have sex" then let them dress in a manner that does nothing but encourage the oppisite sex in that direction. I think the photos are suggestive, and not just the one everyone is questioning. Those of her and her father were quite stomach turning to me. The point is that it's not okay for anyone, much less a child, to dress or pose for photos in such a provocative matter with so much exposed. My oldest daughter(14)caught a glimpse of the photo shoot on television last night and was disgusted. However, I don't hold Miley soley responsible. She is still a CHILD, so her parents are going to be holding the bag on this one. And if this is just a publicity thing for them done purposely, SHAME ON YOU BILLY RAY AND TRISH!!!Parents should have control over what their child watches, listens to, and what kind of photos they pose for and any flack that follows should be directed at that child's parents.

If you want my professional conspiratorial opinion...
Disney even wanted these pictures.
Disney is sadistic
Miley even gives her own cute version of the Illuminati/ devil hand sign in one of those photos...
Liebowitz was the last photographer to photo John Lennon before he was executed by a Manchurian Candidate.
She also shot the Queen of England and potentially played part in "Queengate".
Liebowitz father was an officer in the Air Force, probably in intelligence.
The picture of a topless 15 year old was not even the most disturbing photo for me, it was the ones with her father with both trying to look sexy.
Im on to you Disney.
You all can pass the buck so no one is at fault in the end, but I am on to your Jesuit Operation.
It all goes back to 1950 when Walt Disney joined that Jesuit Fraternity. Next thing you know he was having Nazi scientists on that escaped prosecution via ratlines set up by the CIA and the Vatican in Operation Paperclip.
Now the casual reader is going to read this all and have quite a laugh. That is until they look into it all and the information ALL checks out.
Gunpowder Plot anyone? Jesuit
Lincolns assassination? Jesuit
Civil War? Jesuit again
Kennedys assassination? Jesuit
French Revolution? Jesuit under the Illuminati in which they created to take control of Masonry and get themselves unsuppressed by the Pope after they had Napoleon take him hostage in France.
We have a serious Jesuit problem here.
Jesuit Generals George Casey and Jesuit General David Petraeus are not fighting these wars for Americas sake, but for the Vatican.
Read the Washington Posts 4/11/0 article titled "A Catholic Wind in the White House: Is Bush a Secret Catholic", and trust me, there is much, much more to the story to tell.
Jesuits have been on the Board of Directors at Disney and have been behind the scenes since the days of Walt Disney himself.

I agree with Rog. Disney isn't wholesome-hasn't been in a long time. You can't put garbage in a kid's head and expect nothing less to come out. THAT is why this thing with Miley is so disturbing to me. Most parents think this girl is sweet and innocent and have no problem letting their young daughters watch her. I think we've all seen otherwise from her and her people.

Maybe they all need to turn off the Disney channel and study. Great Googly Moogly people - "aldways has bin aldways will do" WHAT?? Get thee to the library!
That said, "Booby Kennedy Days" - hilarious!
Posted by: sunnydaze | April 29, 2008 1:24 PM
I am utterly APPALLED at the comments about how kids show more at the mall/beach than Miley is showing, so it is no big deal. Who is allowing these children to show that much skin? How about dressing age appropriately which means NOT letting everything hang out from the time you are 5?
Also, how does one reconcile the fact that Miley's publicist says Mommy and Daddy were not there for the topless shots, but were clearly shown in the background of the uncut photos?
Finally, all you little kids, grown ups spell words out and use complete sentences. When you can do that, then you can come play in the big people's blog.

What you have is a classic shot by a great photographer that gives you a capsulized view of what it is to be a pretty 15-year-old girl. The sensuality is a part of it, but if you look, you see she's covering herself, not exposing herself. The look on her face is enigmatic, showing doubt, desire and innocence. That's what early adolescence is all about.
Neither photographer nor subject has anything to be sorry for here.

Miley is a sweet innocent starlet who was wowwed by the Hollywood pressure of having Annie L. photograph her in an artsy way. It is artsy, but you just have to be a Los Angeles resident to not think much of it. I actually think Miley Cyrus looks terrible, and it is Annie L's worst work ever.
Posted by: Lily Johnson | April 29, 2008 1:36 PM
This isn't meant to be a typical protrait, it's meant to be art. Miley herself said she signed up for it because she thought it would artistic- she got what she signed up for.
To me the portrait shows an innocence of girlhood, it's an artistic expression. Leibovitz said the same thing.
Whatever happened to art? Since when is posing even partially nude immediately labeled as inappropriate? Frankly, I've seen 15-year-old girls walking down the street showing more skin, cleavage and buttocks than the mere back of this picture. Would anyone care if this was an obscure teen model instead of a famous teen?
Shouldn't the question at hand be why American minds immediately jump to sex so quickly? Do you honestly think that if this picture were of a European star and released in a European county that anyone would care?
Sure Miley has the good girl image to protect- to be role models to thousands of little girls. But Miley isn't a little girl anymore. She is growing up and it was her decision to pose for art- In an adult magazine, where, if the media hadn't made a frenzy over it, most little girls probably wouldn't have seen or known about it. Vanity Fair is famous for their beautiful and out of the ordinary covers, so why would you expect anything different for Miley?
To be honest, It's very refreshing to see a tasteful, artistic portrait of Miley Cyrus versus the photos we see every day of scantily clad young actresses.

Posted by: Dept of Redundancy Dept. | April 29, 2008 1:40 PM
Your "experts" are so clueless it's laughable. This is a straight career move and nothing else. Miley's advisors, whoever they are, understand that she will need to shed her little-girl image while she's still in the spotlight, and this is a finely calibrated attempt to do so. She didn't make any mistake here -- this is a masterpiece of careful product positioning...

this is sick. that's all. it's plain sick. and people are reveling in it, which is even sicker. it seems i remember vanity fair published some pictures of the Amish in PA after the tragic school shooting took place there. Something is sick with Vanity Fair magazine, no doubt. But something is far sicker in Billy Ray Cyrus' mind. What's up with all these white trash millionaires prostituting their daughter to the media? If Disney continues to empower this young girl, Disney is sick, too, just as Nickelodeon is sick for keeping Jamie Lynn Spears under contract. These are supposed to be role models for young girls, and they are role modeling harlotry. and all of you people saying 'what's wrong with sex?' and etc. are sick too - because this girl is only 15. promoting pornography to kids should be illegal, even is it is 'artistic.' this is really, really sick - all of these adults behaving like children, turning their own children into prostitutes. these things are sick. these children are being cheated of their youth. and they (the cyrus family) calls themselves christians. this is sick. this whole thing is sick beyond belief.
Posted by: cynamon | April 29, 2008 1:42 PM
As I read through some comments I am outraged at the ignorance of some comments. The photo IS NOT beautiful art--it is borderline child pornography. Let's not forget this is a "15" yr old child, not an 18 yr old. If you found this exact picture in the drawer of an old man--tell me--would you not cringe and consider it child porn or would you shrug it off as just art?! In my opinion, 15 yr old girls should not be photographed wrapped in bedsheets with smudged red lipstick, hair tousled, looking like they just crawled out of a roll in the hay!
What were her parents thinking! And SHAME ON THEM for exposing and exhibiting their own daughter in this light! Anything to make a buck, I guess--including prostituting your own daughters pictures to the public.

PEOPLE. just leave her alone. she is the sweetest girl. just because she made a mistake (even though i dont see anything wrong wiuth the pictures) just think about, if she would have had a bra on or something she would have a little strap around her back. not too much of a difference huh?.. think about it.

Call it what you will: Exploitation, Miley's missteps or her first amendment unveiling, but the notion that Billy Ray knew nothing of the suggestive session resulting between Leibovitz and his beloved daughter, is implausable, not to mention naive. Eveyone knows (or most everyone) of Annie Leibovitz's "artistry," peeling back the layers of the onion, revealing the person underneath. It just so happens she was inspired to do so with a teen empress. But let's talk about suggestive and concentual shall we: The image of Billy Ray and Miley I think speaks of a cozier connection then I've seen between most fathers and daughters (celeb's or regular folks). Raw sensuality and a suggestive tone oozes from the photograph, something both father and daughter found unobjectionable during the photo shoot, yes?! Let's face it - teen idols of Miley's status and others (whom we've witnessed their rise and fall) are brands and packaged the same as any product.
While I think Leibovitz may have extended the boundaries with the young star, I do believe that she and Vanity Fair were doing exactly what they are paid and delight in doing: capturing images in the light and life they decide best suits their vision and those of their buying public. I daresay, the magazine was licking its chops before the images were developed knowing the buzz and controversy that would result.
So the discussions will continue as will the backlash. Parents, loyal fans and Disney will have to reconcile whether this escapade was an act of deliberate exploitation or just another day in the life of a teen icon.

The shot shown there is kind of nice and artistic - doesn't seem to have the same sexual imagery as the one with the sheet. It lets her look young and vulnerable. And, I still haven't seen an episode of Hahhan Montana; still unsure as to why I have an opinion!

i have been modelling since i was 12, i am 24 years old now, n i have MANY pix in my portfolio that may be labelled as racy. but thats apart of the entertainment industry. miss cyrus' photo shoot with a world famous photog is a dream come true for any girl/boy in the biz, everyone should be more worried about the 11 year olds on myspace n nexopia who lie about their age n put gross skanky webcam pix up of themselves. n another thing i may add, is that the ppl who are claimin that her pix are too racy are obviosly the perverts who are turned on by the pix, n that is the extent of their creative judgement. what ever happened to the art aspect of the entertainment biz???

Anther Disney star messes up. Come on you knew it was going to happen .And you know what it's a start. She is way to young to shoot topless. Or anything close to topless. She is only 15. If she doing this at 15 what is she going to do at 18. She could of said no. Disney he terminate her career with them. Because we all know she going to do something else like this again. But it is going to be worse. I hope she got what she wanted , NOT being seen as a young artist anymore.
And don't say its none of our business our children look up to this. Like the Olsen twins, and Brittney . Spears. Do you want future America to turn out like them. And the worst thing her father was there. He approved.
Yes sex is natural. But do you want your child having sex at fifteen. Don't give me she is a Christian and she plans on being pure until marriage. Brittney said the same thing. The girl is trying to grow up way to fast.

I am so happy that Jamie Lee came out with her thoughts on this disgusting exploitation of this young child's body. I am so disappointed in the photographer. What was she thinking? I once honored her as a great artist of our time. She has cheapened herself and the elite of her profession.
The weak and young in our society are exploited for the sake of greed.

Ya gotta love it. When the rest of the world is consumed with wars, food shortages, etc, and our economy is tanking, we become obsessed with whether Miley is showing too much skin. Will someone please reorder our priorities? As for who is responsible, duh! The Cyrus family was there, did it, saw it, approved it. Oh, so it must be the fault of Vanity Fair.

Ok, I'm feeling the need to organize (I'm a lawyer, sorry). But first can we all decry the state of teenage grammar? Geesh. If Miley really wanted to be a good role model, she'd guest on Schoolhouse Rock.
It seems to me like people are disagreeing on (1) who's to blame, (1.5) should there be blame (2) is it sexual or not? (3) pointing out that she's 15, (3.5) pointing out that lots of 15-year-olds explore sexuality through dress, (4) wondering if it will have an impact on her fans, (5) should she be a role model, (6) mistake, publicity play, or buyer's regret.
Lots of interesting topics that go beyond Miley I think, which is why I'm interested, I finally decided. It's definitely started a good discussion...for the most part. I mean, honestly, LEARN TO WRITE COMPETENTLY OR PLAN TO NEVER GET A JOB.

Do you know what is hilarious? All of these 50+ women talking about how horrible this is. My sisters are all in their 50's and you should see their year books from 1970 to 1977. Extremely short skirts. I bet there are panties showing in almost every group picture. Provocative clothing on teenage girls has been going on since at least 1960. I am not saying it is right or wrong, just that to be all sanctimonious about it is very hypocritical.

miley who?
Posted by: eric | April 29, 2008 2:13 PM
Miley is just living every teen's dream -- to be older. Because freedom comes with age, right? Responsibility should also come with age, but many Americans haven't realized that fact. Reports say that her parents had already left the site, but they're not new to Hollywood -- there should have been a contract that spelled out clearly what pictures could/could not be taken. And Annie L. needs to realize her responsibility as an adult to protect children rather than exploit them for her own personal gain. I'm so sick of the "deer caught in the headlights" look that people get when they're caught doing something in poor taste! Grow up! Realize the choices that you're about to make! If you really want to do something ... do it ... but don't claim ignorance after the fact.

She is a beautiful young girl and her dad is hot. If he was some old man and she was some plain Jane in that EXACT same pose, I doubt anyone would be offended.
They are attractive and sensual and people read into the photo their own attraction to Miley, Billy or both! I see a Dad with his daughter snuggled up next to him , a bit vulnerable....Dad looking proudly yet protectively into the distance.
Also, for most photo shoots, the stars request final approval of the pictures. It was the reaction of viewers that altered what I am sure deep down is Miley's belief, and rightfully so. The pictures are beautiful.

What kind of a descent person would wait until a child's parents had left a photo shoot to then take the opportunity to convince the child that it was time for "artistic" shots. A predator that's who. Annie Liebowitz should be ashamed of herself. To talk a young girl out of her clothes AFTER her parents have left would be considered a felony if she were a man. She gives lesbians a bad name.

The photograph is provocative as well as the message. Too often, the pressure is on young teen on the verge of adulthood to sexualize themselves, a disaster waiting to happen. Remember Britney Spears? The parents showed poor judgement and should have guided their daughter away from these shots even if she wanted to do them. Once again a tween is exploited. What's the deal with her father getting into a shot? Is he trying to revitalize his career through his daughter? Shame on both parents. The good Christians made a wrong turn.
