In Praise of Snoop Dogg

Defying convention yet again, Snoop Dogg makes the scene at Monday night's CMT Awards. (AP)
Bow wow wow yippee yo yippee yay, Snoop Dogg's in the [expletive] house.
I may take some heat here for giving props to a man who is too hot (hot = packing heat) for most airports and one entire country (Great Britain), but in the past year or so Snoop Dogg -- aka Cordozar Calvin Broadus, Jr. -- has been quietly ripping a stereotype he helped create to shreds. He's emerging like a butterfly from his Crip-enabled chrysalis to transcend his former image of a gang-banging rhyme slinger.
He may not be perfect, but hey, he's trying. Last week he risked a big time street cred reduction when he sat down with the harpies of "The View" to talk about his new album and line of clothes. And while Barbara Walters and Elisabeth Hasselbeck combine to cast a cool-chilling pall on almost anyone who steps into their web, Snoop was able to simultaneously stay true to himself while charming even the stoic Walters, who chided him for his continued pot use. Hey, it's medical, says Snoop.
In addition to the new clothing line and album, Snoop's empire has extended to a reality show -- "Snoop Dogg's Father Hood" -- based on his home life (how un-thug is that?) and his Snoop Youth Football League, an L.A. based non-profit aimed at teaching leadership and team values.
And as for that new album, well, according to Snoop "Ego Trippin'" represents a departure. Gone are the days, he says, of misogyny and glorifying gang bangers. Said Snoop of the album: "It is a reflection of my life and how I have grown as not only an artist but also a man - it is about me staying true to where I came from while having to accept where I am in my life today, it's deep."
Am I advocating Snoop Dogg life lesson manuals for teenagers? No. But nor am I prepared to hold Pete Doherty or Amy Winehouse or even Angelina Jolie up as paragons or model citizens. But, being of a certain age I can appreciate certain aspects of their game. In Snoop's case, that means blaring "Gin and Juice" (NSFW) without it influencing how I roll (if I actually "roll" -- the jury's still out). I guess I am saying that we're none of us blameless and, as Snoop said last week on "The View" (and I paraphrase): you can't undo the past; all you can do is try to make the present and future better.

Good for Snoop. You know, I remember over ten years ago, when he was becoming really popular, a guy I worked with was talking about Snoop, and I made some comment along the lines of "yeah, just another gangsta rap thug," but my friend said "no, really, you gotta listen to what he's rapping about, it's not like that at all. He's all about chilling out, not starting trouble, just being cool..." It made me see Snoop in this different light, and while I wouldn't say I turned into a fan, I did notice that his popularity skyrocketed compared to probably 95% of the rest of the rappers out there. That's not coincidence.

For shizzle my nizzle, Lizzle Homie-K.
I love Snoop, the good, the bad and the ugly. I love the fact he went to the AMC award show, can handle himself in a group of me who aren't his groupies, and has grown to be somewhat honest about his past/present.
I'm always roll'n with me homies, holmes.
(Alas, spelling is not my speciality in any language/diction.)

I've always really liked snoop, I've like his music and his reality show is funny.

Byoo, that first line is a direct pull from Snoop's contribution to one of Dr. Dre's songs -- "F With Dre Day."
Though in retrospect I do wish I'd mentioned his old MTV show -- Snoop Dizzle TeleVizzle. It rocked.

I'm having trouble connecting "I have grown as not only an artist but also a man" with a new clothing line that says "Doggystyle." What am I missing?

Thank you td

No you can't undo the past, but you can acknowledge it was wrong. You can also denounce it. The man admitted he was a pimp and he is darn proud of it. He has never said it was wrong to own other human beings. When he does that, and only then, will he be minimally acceptable to me.

What past? Multiple gun convictions and arrests in the last year and half. Even if you think it is cool for him to be toking with little kids around, and driving under the influence, is his gun-toting charming?

For someone who hasn't had a hit single in years, Snoop still manages to keep his cool.
Does anyone else think Pete Doherty looks scary? I can't stand to look at pictures of him. His face looks like it was half melted a la Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Liz,
Four words: Bluegrass "Gin and Juice."
It's The Gourds, and it's genius. Check it out if you haven't already!

I can't explain it or justify it, but I've always loved Snoop. My favorite Snoop moment: the extra on the DVD of Starsky and Hutch where he shows off his wardrobe.

You forgot the most amazing one of all...he and Martha Stewart (yes that Martha Stewart) are text buddies!

I can't help but like Snoop. And if you like ironic covers of gangsta rap, I recommend Richard Cheese - the Mayor McCheese, if you will, of the genre. His big band cover of "Gin and Juice" is priceless, as is his tango rendition of "Insane in the Brain."

td asks:
"I'm having trouble connecting "I have grown as not only an artist but also a man" with a new clothing line that says "Doggystyle." What am I missing?"
You may wish to look in Xibit's lyrics about "assume the position..." in the tune "*itch Please II" on Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP."
WARNING: Lyrics and attitude are to the extreme in this tune and everywhere else on this CD. I'm not giving you a link to any lyrics. That way, if you search and are appalled, you have only yourself to blame.

Incidentally, I just put his new song "Sensual Seduction" on my work out mix and listened to it last night for the first time. It's all about how he likes to please the ladies. Quite a far cry from "It Ain't No Fun (if the homies can't have none)." Kudos, Snoop!

That was a fantatic article!!!!!!
You managed to embody the "Snoop" in Snoop, simply a bad mofo with a past looking to the horizon and seeing things as they are......aticipating positive change and growth.
However , when it calls , I hope he still RIPPS THAT BEAT UP Gangsta style when the time comes (No limit and Dogg House keep it Crack a lackin')
Popular culture is still confused @ the "controversy" of hip hop and the meaning of their lyrics and expressions.
I don't think people can look past the negativity and theirin lies the problem,
Hip Hop is like ventilation to the person on the mic , and when your life revolves around gangs, drugs and prostitution for the first 20 years of your life, that tends to be the norm, therefore that is the reflection the person casts , however the recipients of said reflection interpret it as negativity.

I don't need to approve of Snoop to love that he's doing what he's doing. His new album is great.
And, just for fun, don't forget the classic Ben Folds-channels-Dan Fogelberg version of "B*!%hes ain't S#)t" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3C4N6p78io
(and of course, Jonathan Coulton's gentle lyric version of "Baby Got Back" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=819HCK-52_8)!

Check out the Gourds' version of Gin & Juice, could play it on WAMU if they still had any of their music shows:

"is his gun-toting charming?"
Some call it gun toting, some would call it exercising his second amendment rights. (not that I am in that camp, but since I heard a commercial on the radio this weekend for a gun show that ended with the line "come celebrate your first amendment rights!!" I know the gun nuts are out there.
Besides, as much as I like Snoop, I really, REALLY didn't like it when he showed up at the MTV awards with women on leashes. I don't know what pi**ed me off more: that he would ask a woman to do that, or that the women agreed when asked.
""I'm having trouble connecting "I have grown as not only an artist but also a man" with a new clothing line that says "Doggystyle." What am I missing?"

Doggystyle is a bit of a play on words for Snoop; his Mom nicknamed him Snoopy when he was a kid because of the way he dressed (would love to see a pic) and his love of the Peanuts cartoon. Not that he doesn't work the sexual aspect, but his nickname had nothing to do with sex.
Who woulda thunk it?

You may not be able to undo the past, but, gee, one can at least regret a thing or two. That whole porn thing Snoopy was into might be worth publicly rebuking. If not by him, maybe you, Liz.

does he still make porn in his house? gee, how cool. so it's cool to be sexist? nope
