Cool aptures! Not as cool as Liev's chops, but ...
Seriously: I'd much rather get the quick photo or preview than navigate into cheesy tabloid world. Thanks for the technology.

Posted by: Martha | April 15, 2008 8:35 AM

Beyonce ready to retire? Let's hope she and Jay-Zed have put some of their $860M+ net worth into a decent IRA. Wouldn't want them to end up penniless in their golden years.

Posted by: If byoolin won't worry about these things, who will? | April 15, 2008 8:44 AM

"Woman accused of embezzling $50,000 from Charlton Heston."

Would've been easier just to pry it from his cold, dead hands, no?

Posted by: byoolin | April 15, 2008 8:46 AM

Poor delusional Heather Mills:

"She believed that if the show got high ratings, it would be because of her," said our source. "She treated this like she was starring in a big-budget movie."

I'd say she lost it, but she never had it. What a freakin' nutcase.

Posted by: surlychick | April 15, 2008 8:50 AM

Yay for the Apture. Keep 'em!

Posted by: RiverCityRoller | April 15, 2008 8:52 AM

I like the apture, especially since I can now wow my friends and colleagues with a new (to me) technological word!

RE: Chris Tucker & Jackie Chan reuniting for a fourth movie...This begs just one question: Why?
To which there is but one answer: Money.

RE: Richie Sambora...He should definitely face child endangerment charges. And if he doesn't they better have a good explanation as to why he isn't. If anyone else did the same thing while his daughter was in the car, I guarantee he'd want them charged. Maybe that's the thing that will help him sober up once and for all.

RE: Marilyn goin' down...I can't help but wonder how she would have been viewed if she lived now. Is her behavior really that different from the Paris, LL, Pam Anderson's of the day? What makes her an icon? Yes, she had talent to a degree, but she did the same thing many young women do...she traded in on her sexuality to get ahead. I'm not talking specifically about the 'casting couch' but about changing her identity to fit an image that would sell, and allowing herself to be exploited. Nowadays, I doubt the illusion would be respected. Who in 40 years will hold back a sex tape so that a young actress's reputation isn't (further) sullied? They don't even wait until the sheets are dry before they post stuff on YouTube or other viral sites. Or better yet, sell to the highest bidder.
I know. I'm thinking too much.

Posted by: methinks | April 15, 2008 8:54 AM

I'm glad the producers of the new Batguano movie have left the movie intact "despite one disturbing scene that features the late Heath Ledger pretending to be dead."

If you start cutting footage out of a film because it's got people in it who later died, movies like The Maltese Falcon and Citizen Kane are going to lose a lot of their luster.

On the plus side, though, David Spade and Rob Schneider are still young, so "Joe Dirt" and "Deuce Bigalow" will be around for awhile.

Apture links are a great idea. I love not having to navigate away from this page to see pics or read blurbs.

Posted by: prozek | April 15, 2008 9:00 AM

Ithink methinks may need an aspirin. I know if my head hurts from reading that your head must be...ow.ooow...

OK...back to the boodle

Posted by: omni | April 15, 2008 9:00 AM

yes! I like the aperture link. Lots of times I just want to peek at a pic and not have to navigate away. Very cool.

Heather moving to the US? Please, don't!

Posted by: | April 15, 2008 9:01 AM

madonna's forehead scares me, but i like not having to leave celebritology land to get freaked out. i can do it all here from the comfort of byoolin's comments.

Posted by: melissamac1 | April 15, 2008 9:10 AM

Hear, hear to the Apture links! Huzzah!

Posted by: PGM | April 15, 2008 9:12 AM

Everything will be alright melissamac1: just move your mouse over the first Apture link and giggle every time the words "Swift Pickler win big" pop up.

Posted by: byoolin | April 15, 2008 9:13 AM

Love the Aptures. Please use from now on!

Posted by: Anonymous | April 15, 2008 9:14 AM

Love the aptures! Thanks

Posted by: bethesda | April 15, 2008 9:15 AM

So now Celebritology is like a cult: we're all sitting around waiting for the Apture.

See you in Hell, Kirk Cameron!

Posted by: byoolin | April 15, 2008 9:16 AM

Yes to aptures.

Posted by: KG | April 15, 2008 9:17 AM

Love the Aptures! They are a keeper

Posted by: Dcet | April 15, 2008 9:18 AM

Ahhhh, Keanu in the morning, goofy facial expression and all. Its going to be a good day.

Yippeee for the apture links. Thanks Liz.

I hope the Joker death scene remains in the movie. From the description of the scene removing it make no sense. Heck the reason for its removal makes no sense.

Oh joy, the possibility of another Chris and Jackie movie.

Posted by: petal | April 15, 2008 9:21 AM

apture is great! but almost no other links from wapo are functional. including all stories from the front page. maybe this is this an IE bug?

Posted by: osull1va | April 15, 2008 9:24 AM

Love the new links Liz!! Keep em coming!

Posted by: KS | April 15, 2008 9:27 AM

Of course methinks *thinks*. It's not like she calls herself doofus or brainless or paris or something!

Jackie Chan is one of my secret pleasures!
I even watched his cartoon not so many years ago.

Definately like the aptures - hooray technology!

Posted by: sunnydaze | April 15, 2008 9:30 AM

Hey osull1va, I think it might just be you. I have been on wapo all morning, oops I mean I have been working very hard all morning, and I have had no problems with any of the links...quick, phone a nerd!

Posted by: sunnydaze | April 15, 2008 9:32 AM

Apture links are very cool, Liz Kelly, very cool.

Posted by: jake e. poo | April 15, 2008 9:33 AM

I like the aptures, but it will be interesting to see what happens when one comes into conflict with the "Viewing est verboten!" software my company runs. :)

Posted by: CentrevilleMom | April 15, 2008 9:34 AM

Love the apture links - especially to the photos. I typically can't click on the links while at work, so this at least helps me get an idea of what you're talking about.

Posted by: | April 15, 2008 9:35 AM

In the words of Adrian Monk, I am LOLing out loud. Thanks, sunnydaze!

Posted by: methinks | April 15, 2008 9:37 AM

In the words of Adrian Mole, a swan can break a man's arm, you know.

Posted by: byoolin | April 15, 2008 9:43 AM

If it's a reference to another article, I say offer the little icon. If it's background -- a bio, definition or passive information link -- for the love of Pete, avoid it.

The Post has started linking like a fiend to background. I want pertinent, active, relative links, please.

Posted by: Chris | April 15, 2008 9:49 AM

What's NOT to like about the aptures?

Posted by: mehitabel | April 15, 2008 9:50 AM

Like the aptures. Best thing about them is that the pic of Madonna was nice and small. That's really the only way I can handle her anymore.

Since the pope's coming, I'll make a confession: I love Jackie and Chris and I'll be spending my money to see their new movie. God, I love being a loser!!!!

Posted by: jaybbub | April 15, 2008 10:09 AM

Love the Apture links. And I second Chris's comments about passive, information links. That's really starting to bother me in WaPo articles.

I don't think I've ever seen Keanu look so animated!

Posted by: Sappho | April 15, 2008 10:13 AM

Byoolin -- I'm a huge Adrian Mole fan. Thanks for invoking his name!

Posted by: Liz Kelly | April 15, 2008 10:14 AM

HELLO BATMAN MOVIE SPOILERS?! Well at least now I won't have to go to the theater to figure out what happens. GAH that always drives me bonkers.

Posted by: DJ | April 15, 2008 10:14 AM

apture rules!

Posted by: flynnchick | April 15, 2008 10:31 AM

Love the new link thingies. Like everybody else. So, basically, this comment adds nothing to the conversation. Noo nee noo nee noo. How's everybody doing today?

Posted by: h3 | April 15, 2008 10:36 AM

I have just been informed that "phone a nerd" is not acceptable nomenclature. please disregard the above and replace with the culturally acceptable, "text a geek!"

Posted by: sunnydaze | April 15, 2008 10:36 AM

Love the aptures Please Please Please keep them!

Posted by: Greenbelt | April 15, 2008 10:43 AM

I like the aptures. I'd even like more of them!

Posted by: HOE | April 15, 2008 10:45 AM

Apture good. Heather Mills bad. Me Tarzan.

Re: Heather Mills -- the NYPost needs to raise the maturity level to at least knee-high. The "one-legged" comment really should be banned from now on. (The "gold-digging former nudie model" comment can stay.)

Keanu Reeves just slays me.

byoolin: Adrian Mole?! I saw an AM play in London years ago. Haven't thought of that name in a long time. What a scream.

Posted by: td | April 15, 2008 10:51 AM

Wah! Madonna's head popping out at me like that is not a good way to start the day! The Apture warning would have been good at the top of the column!

Seriously, though, the Daily Mail is notorious for Photoshopping in unflattering details with abandon; I've tried to post comments on their site calling them on it, but oddly enough they never get posted!

And if we all pitch in, maybe sign up for a monthly subscription, can we hire a group of professional booers to follow Heather M. around so that maybe she'll get the idea that we don't like her any better here? Except when little Beatrice is around, of course.

Posted by: pixie radiance | April 15, 2008 10:54 AM

New links are pretty cool.

Posted by: Alex | April 15, 2008 11:03 AM

I'm probably giving this too much thought, but Richie Sambora should face child endangerment charges - that's what he did. I know he's contrite and that he's dealing with a very serious illness, but that shouldn't negate the fact that he endangered his child.

On a lighter note - season finale of Real Housewives of NYC is on tonight. I know where I'll be at 10!

Posted by: Stuck@Work | April 15, 2008 11:14 AM

Love the aptures.
Hate the misuse of of "beg the question." I'm talking to you, methinks.
Here's a friendly copy-editing dinosaur to explain it to you, my fellow celebrity junkie: http://qwantz.com/archive/000693.html

Posted by: other liz | April 15, 2008 11:39 AM

Pixie, I would totally go for hiring professional booers. However, I don't think that will break through Heather's delusions. Since she KNOWS Brits hate her, she is convinced that because we found them over 200 years ago, we must love her.

Posted by: ep | April 15, 2008 11:45 AM

I wouldn't be surprised if the Marilyn Monrow sex film is a hoax. An unidentified person sold the film to another unidentified person. The film allegedly depicts Monroe performing a BJ on an unidentified person. Does this broker have any proof to back any of this up?

Posted by: Woodbridge | April 15, 2008 11:47 AM

I'm surprised Jackie Chan signed on for Rush Hour 4. He was doing a TV interview to promote RH3 (I think in Europe or Asia) but he couldn't lie and admitted he was embarrassed by it.

I like photos of Keanu Reeves better than movies starring Keanu Reeves.

Posted by: Lisa1 | April 15, 2008 11:59 AM

apture=awesome

Posted by: los angeles | April 15, 2008 12:01 PM

AH BATMAN SPOILER!

Not actually as bad as you think, read the link...

Posted by: wally | April 15, 2008 12:07 PM

Yes to apture links. Threw me a bit at first, but I like them.

On the other hand, I do not care for Heather Mills, but isn't booing her at the Miss USA Pageant just rude and boorish? Honestly, people, just keep quiet and don't clap if you don't like someone.

This is getting to be par for the Miss USA Pageant, though. It's really turning into some kind of circus. If it's not the contestants, it's the judges. The Donald really knows how to class up a joint, doesn't he?

Posted by: alex | April 15, 2008 1:20 PM

The Next Big Thing should be a combination of Aptures and mpegs so that clicking on a link pops up an mpeg within an apture box. That way, when we click on the Pete Wentz link, an apture can pop up with Maury Povich declaring "You are NOT the father."

Posted by: Sasquatch | April 15, 2008 1:28 PM

Thank you, other liz. I love learning stuff. Especially from dinosaurs.

Posted by: methinks | April 15, 2008 2:13 PM

Am I the only one who isn't seeing or getting aptures? I use Firefox.

Posted by: hermespal | April 15, 2008 2:22 PM

I use Firefox, too, hermespal, and I'm seeing/getting the aptures.

Posted by: methinks | April 15, 2008 2:42 PM

Doesn't poor deluded Heather know she can't move Beatrice without Paul's okay? That will be her excuse for jettisoning the kid who has now served her purpose. Surely all the funds for Beatrice aren't going through Heather's greedy little hands first...

Posted by: expat51 | April 15, 2008 3:18 PM

"...isn't booing [Heather Mills] at the Miss USA Pageant just rude and boorish?"

Well, yes, it is. But no more so than what we do here with such gusto.

And then there's that thing about whole ogling girls in bikinis and high heels and pretending like it's something better than gargling $10 beers at The Brass Rail.

"We are all of us in the gutter. Some of us are looking at the stars."

To hermespal:
If you have NoScript on Firefox you'll need to allow apture.com.

Posted by: TallulahBankrupt | April 15, 2008 4:00 PM

Thanks methinks and Tallulah. I have NO idea if I have NoScript on Firefox nor how to allow apture.com. Advice welcomed.

Posted by: hermespal | April 15, 2008 4:48 PM

Yes to apture. Yes to Keanu. But no discussion of HIS unfortunate facial hair?

Posted by: ddbz | April 15, 2008 4:59 PM

hermespal,
I am one of those completely stoopid computer owner/operators. I use words like "thingy" and "doodad" etc. However, my husband uses Firefox on our desktop computer and is not able to see pictures posted on my livejournal or whatnot because of the spam protection thingy he uses. Maybe your firewall (that's the word I was looking for) won't allow the use of aptures? I don't know but it's a thought. Hope you're able to figure it out.

Posted by: methinks | April 15, 2008 5:00 PM

The Oscar Wilde quote has put me in mind of one of my favorites--as he laying dying in bed "Either that wallpaper goes or I do."

Or, if one takes the wiki version: Just a month before his death he is quoted as saying, "My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One or other of us has got to go."

Posted by: hermespal | April 15, 2008 5:00 PM

I'm going to assume you have a PC. If you have NoScript you should see a small blue S with a little red slashed circle in front of it. It will be in the bottom right corner, just above the time. If you see this symbol, right-click on it then choose "Allow apture.com". This will refresh your page and you will be able to use apture.
If you don't find the NoScript symbol I don't know how to help you, unfortunately.
For anyone who's wondering, NoScript blocks a lot of Java script unless you specifically allow it. It's kept a great deal of unwanted ads and pop ups off my PC.

Posted by: TallulahBankrupt | April 15, 2008 5:03 PM

P.S. Huzzah to Oscar Wilde quotes!

Posted by: TallulahBankrupt | April 15, 2008 5:05 PM

"Yes to Keanu. But no discussion of HIS unfortunate facial hair?"

Well, ddbz, that's another reason I like Keanu. Like me, he can't grow a decent beard either. (Unlike me, he still tries.)

I'll have to remember that Oscar Wilde quote about the wallpaper. Excellent!

Posted by: td | April 15, 2008 5:10 PM

Hi,

This is Tristan from Apture. We're really glad that all of you are liking the Apture links so much!

We do already allow linking to videos and many other types of media inside our windows, you can see some great examples at the 'The Fix', another Washington Post blog: http://blog.washingtonpost.com/thefix/

If you are having trouble seeing the links and have JavaScript enabled send us an email at contact@apture.com and we'll try to help you out.

Best,
Tristan

Posted by: Tristan | April 15, 2008 5:28 PM

Thanks for all of the advice--I do have a small blue square with a red X in it in the bottom right corner. It has to do with pop up blocking. Is it a matter of allowing pop-ups on this site or is that going to get me ad storms?

I'm so pathetic at this. Youtube just forced me to upgrade my Flash player, which I did, but it only works on Explorer--I'm still getting the "you must upgrade" notice when I access it using firefox. I detest explorer.

Posted by: hermespal | April 15, 2008 5:47 PM

Nice way that The Apture lets me see stuff while I'm still reading the blog. Did you notice you can make the pics n stuff much bigger, very cool. But, Madonna LARGE, ugh!!!

Posted by: bongobutt | April 15, 2008 6:53 PM

I like the Apture links, but if i did want to get the full story from the tabloids, how would i do that?

Posted by: Fort Wash | April 15, 2008 11:14 PM

The apture links are cool, but they need to fade a moment after you mouse away. It's just one click to close the pop-up, but sometimes that's one click too many.
