For Oprah, the Golden Touch

There's just something unnerving about a disembodied Oprah head floating in space and crowned with two dogs. I'm not the world's biggest Oprah fan, as has been made abundantly clear here in the past. The woman has an outsized ego and way too much sway over the minds (and spending habits) of middle America. That's why when I saw that Oprah was the latest subject of the one-note celeb-centric artist Daniel Edwards (yes, the same guy who brought us the NSFW Britney giving birth and Paris Hilton autopsy sculptures), my face immediately mimicked the look it gets when I find my own dog has unceremoniously left a present in the middle of the living room rug. (Image courtesy Leo Kesting Gallery) As if flesh-and-blood Oprah wasn't bad enough, Edwards has transformed Winfrey into a golden goddess, replete with flowing mane and supporting life-sized likenesses of her dead dogs Sophie and

Beyonce's Bootylicious Kid Ads: Over the Line?

(Image via PopGumbo.com) Yep, we know Beyonce Knowles is bootylicious, but suddenly the pop diva turned designer is at the receiving end of a torrent of criticism for marketing that image to the second-grade set. The latest from Beyonce's House of Dereon -- the fashion label she runs with mom Tina -- is "Dereon Girls." And while the clothes themselves may be innocuous enough (if trite and trendy), it is the advertisements featuring seven-year-olds in full makeup and high heels that has critics lining up to charge Beyonce with contributing to the delinquency of minors. Though the ads debuted last fall, they've been the target of a resurgent flurry of comments in the blogosphere: Asks (NSFW) blog PopGumbo: "What is the next ad going to look like? Babies wearing gold metallic bikinis while five-year old boys throw Monopoly money on them." Conservative critic Michelle Malkin, invoking JonBenet Ramsey's image

Rant: Leave 'Donnie Darko' Alone

Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone and freaky bunny in 2001's 'Donnie Darko.' (Dale Robinette/Courtesy NewMar) [Begin Rant] Today we take a break from our usual fare of celeb-circumspection to consider (again) Hollywood's annoying addiction to the sequel. Sure, I'm as hesitantly expectant as the next girl about the imminent release of "Indiana Jones's" fourth installment, but from the moment Harrison Ford cracked that whip back in 1981, "Indiana Jones" had franchise practically tattooed on his forehead. And we were okay with that. Despite its setting during World War II, the movie was a lighthearted, vicarious romp through bug-filled caves where daredevil narrow escapes were tempered by pithy dialogue (The grody "om nom shiva" scene not withstanding.) It was "Goonies" for grown-ups. But, never content to let a good thing remain untarnished by the stank of greed, Hollywood has aimed its indiscriminate money-making steamroller at "Donnie Darko," a movie that --

Comment Box: Nick Cannon Marries Up

Why exactly is Nick Cannon famous? -- An amalgam of several queries and comments sent in over the past week. Nick Cannon, like many other bold names, is famous for his talent for self-promotion. Sure, he's been performing stand-up comedy since 16 and acting since he was 18 (with roles on Nickelodeon, "Men in Black II" and that percussion-love classic "Drumline"). The 27-year-old also made a little name for himself hosting MTV comedy shows "Wild 'N Out" and "Short Circuitz." He hit this Celebritologist's radar last spring when his publicist sent out a series of frantic e-mails detailing his Times Square jumbotron proposal to Victoria's Secret model Selita Ebanks (they broke up a few months later). After deleting every single one, Cannon settled back in to his tenuous perch on celebrity's C-level. Until May 1, when news broke of Cannon's marriage chart-topping 38-year-old diva Mariah Carey. Mr. Mariah Carey:

'Lost' Dueling Analysis: Cabin Fever

In which Jen Chaney and I try -- and possibly fail -- to cover every single significant detail from last night's nutrient rich episode. Jen: Last night's episode was chock full of all kinds of "Lost"-ian goodness, so much so that it's hard to know where to begin. Do we start with that wacky, repetitive, tree-chopping Horace Goodspeed? Locke stalker Richard Alpert? (I so want to go to Mittelos Science Camp this summer! It'll be a lot like the camp in "Meatballs," right?) The return of Abaddon, who clearly seems to be working in tandem with Alpert? No, I say we start with the observation that so much of the Locke mythology that's previously been established wove its way back into this episode. Apparently he's always been a backgammon player. The phrase "Don't tell me what I can't do" -- which we heard John say, pointedly, back in season

Highbrow: The Dumbing Down of Barbara Walters

There was a time when Barbara Walters was considered a gold standard example of a female journalist -- a woman who had made her way to the top of a male-dominated field in an era when women in TV news were more likely to be weather "girls." She was the flesh-and-blood, boots to the ground version of Mary Tyler Moore's struggling, unsinkable Girl Friday makes good. She interviewed Castro, she co-anchored the evening news and she developed a reputation for scoring interviews with tough nuts to crack -- Saddam Hussein, Hillary Clinton (mid Starr Report release), Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin together. Now, not so much. She's a celebrity interviewer -- a white Oprah, a female Larry King, a Barbara Walters. Barbara Walters arrives at a New York bookstore to sign copies of her new book, 'Audition.' (Helayne Seidman for The Washington Post) Walters was already teetering close to

Comment Box: Celebrity Memoir Redux

Months ago (maybe it was last summer??) you had a blog entry about memoirs or autobiographies by celebrities that you would recommend. Do you know where I can find that link? -- Zenya, via e-mail Here you go, Zenya: Stars By the Book. Though since that post was written back in December 2006, we've been subjected treated to first person accounts from Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx, "90210" alumna and reality TV regular Tori Spelling and self-banished "View-ster" Rosie O'Donnell. And although I'm not sure I'd recommend it, "View" doyenne Barbara Walters is the latest entrant on the celebrity memoir scene with this week's release of "Auditions." Here's what The Post's Howard Kurtz had to say about Walters's revelations (including her admission that she helped Star Jones cover for weight loss surgery and her own affair with a married Senator): "What emerges from the book is a tenacious 78-year-old woman

10 Truths About Tom Cruise

Oprah gets a hug from pal TC. (AP/Harpo Productions) After two years of battling bad PR, courtesy of his own couch-jumping and weirdly devout ways, Tom Cruise's image rehab is officially underway. Monday's second hour of Oprah's Tom Cruise fest was, well, enh. Unlike Friday's visit to the Colorado Cruise compound (Tom Shales reviewed part one in yesterday's paper) -- complete with a peek inside Tom's inner sanctum and a visit from Suri -- yesterday's in-studio visit had all the charm of an infomercial: enthusiastic sales pitches, marketing posters and an audience of rabid believers. Still, it isn't every day we get to study the elusive Mr. Cruise for the better part of an hour and, never one to squander a chance to flop in front of a TV for 60 whole minutes, I watched. And, because this is how I work people, I took notes -- resulting in
