Ad Watch: Pro-War Ads Thank GOP Senators
A group called Vets for Freedom is buying ad time in 10 states to thank GOP senators supporting the president's Iraq war policies.
The "Thank You" ads began running two weeks ago in Minnesota, singling out Sen. Norm Coleman for praise. The ads continued this week in Kentucky, Nebraska, Virginia and Connecticut. More ads are set to start airing this weekend in Maine, New Hampshire, Arkansas, Iowa and Kansas.
"It's a fairly small ad buy. We're running them in just a couple of markets in every state, and just a couple of rotations," said Adriel Domenech, communications director for Vets for Freedom.
Most of the ads run on Sundays, because, "Senators and Congressman are targets of these ads. What better time is there to catch them?" than during the Sunday morning talk shows, Domenech said. The group is organizing members to attend town hall meetings with members of Congress in their home districts, and will gather in Washington around the time the so-called surge strategy assessment is delivered to Capitol Hill next month.
There are two versions to the ads: "Please Don't Surrender" and "Thank You." Below we use the "Don't Surrender" ad for Sen. John Warner (R-Va.) and the "Thank You" for Sen. Coleman.
Warner, the ranking Republican on the Armed Services Committee, is seen as a bellwether in the congressional debate over the war, as he could lead other moderate Republicans to support a compromise with Democrats on bringing some or all U.S. troops home from Iraq. Coleman, meanwhile, faces a tough reelection fight next year.

Are these ads meant to help Senator Coleman win reelection? Seems counterintuitive to run ads of one's unpopular stands.
The Senator Warner ad reminds me of how Mr. Warner broke his word at the last minute and voted against the Webb Amendment (after he voted for it) and against the interests of our soldiers.
