Democrats Target McConnell -- Again

Now that Kentucky's scandal-plagued Gov. Ernie Fletcher (R) has lost reelection to Steve Beshear (D), Democrats have wasted no time once again targeting their next Republican target in the Bluegrass State: Sen. Mitch McConnell.

As The Fix has reported, "There are too many balls in the air in the state to draw firm conclusions about what Fletcher's loss means to McConnell's future." But the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is out with a new ad tying McConnell to Fletcher:

"Finer Man" replays a video clip of Sen. McConnell saying "I have never met a finer man, than our governor Ernie Fletcher."

"Kentucky is tired of the corruption. Sen. McConnell just doesn't get it," an announcer says.

The ad is playing only online right now, but it may appear on Kentucky TV stations soon, according to DSCC spokeswoman Hannah August.

This is not the first time McConnell has faced the wrath of such ads. We've highlighed several attempts to mess with the Senate minority leader's 2008 reelection efforts. Anti-war groups ran ads targeting Kentucky college students, and folks in the Lexington and Louisville TV markets over the summer. The DSCC also ran an ad over the summer tying McConnell to President Bush's Iraq war strategy.

The Ad wars haven't been all bad for Sen. McConnell. He's earned thank you ads from pro-war groups for his support of the president's war strategy. Separately, he starts a 7-day ad campaign in the Lexington and Lousiville markets tomorrow, at a combined cost of $117,000.
