Man in the Arena

The Post's Michael D. Shear reports today that John McCain's aides are "determined to start crafting McCain's public image. They released a two-minute, online ad Friday called 'Man in the Arena,' which compares McCain to former British prime minister Winston Churchill and former president Theodore Roosevelt, focusing on McCain's military service and his support for the Iraq war."

McCain's Web videos mix dramatic music, great stock video of Washington, D.C., and a rich collection of archival video and photos of the senator, including several pictures of McCain with Ronald Reagan. Here's another Web-only video from late December:

There is not a historian alive who will put McCain in the same league as Winston Churchill!

Churchill was an extraordinary statesman, a savvy politician, a marvelous strategists, a brilliant orator, and a prolific writer. Churchill's military career spanned from war correspondent to Secretary of War. Militarily, Churchill was as courageous as he was reckless. Churchill possessed an incredible mixture of guts, glory, and power; he held tradition in reverence, but feared not the future.

Comparing McCain to Churchill is like comparing an ant to an eagle.

Whatever you feel about McCain, this is an extremely powerful ad to be playing over the top of negativity inwardly focused inside the Democratic party. McCain may be set to rise above the Clinton/Obama dirt fight and present as the elder statesman ready to claim high office.

One of the most moving political ads I have ever seen. Those predicting a Democratic cake walk in November underestimate the power of McCain's pesonal narrative and the broad appeal of his character. This ad shows his campaign's potential.
