McCain's First General Election TV Ads

Senator John McCain, the GOP presidential nominee, released his first ads aimed at a general election audience.

This 60-second spot titled 624787, discusses McCain's experience as a Navy commander and leader. The ad asks a variety of rhetorical questions about McCain's character and leadership ability, such as "What must a president believe about us? About America? That she is worth protecting?...What must we believe about that president? What does he think?..."

The ad is narrated by actor Powers Boothe and will air in New Mexico.

The second ad is a 2 minute spot called Man in the Arena. The ad makes references to two speeches: one by Winston Churchill in 1940 and one by Theodore Roosevelt from 1912. The two clips spliced are between a quotes from a speech by McCain, with the intention of showing McCain's "no surrender policy" when it comes to the war on terror.

Uh oh!

I say that John McCain's military credentials be questioned and skewered at every turn. Let's go to Vietnam and speak with the victims of "Bombs Away" McCain's sorties over Hanoi to be reminded of the human cost of war. It is shameful and disgusting that the Republicans unearthed the corpses of dead Vietnamese for their political ends. If that's the way this sabre-rattler wishes to play it, I say drag him into the gutter and let him drown in his own filth. To paraphrase Dick Cheney, so you spent time in a North Vietnamese prison. SO WHAT?!

Isn't history against the Vietnam vacation? And even 'dummy' Bush was smart enough to dodge the draft. (Yes, smartness is a desirable attribute in a president, by the way- though if you voted for Bush you will hardly think so). Even Reagan with his celluloid wartime experience you'd have to say was more 'with it'.
And how will his experience in Hanoi help? Is he going to get captured in Paris by Sarkozy -a fate worse than death for sure but a tad unlikely.
Age should be no obstacle to the presidency but since he is clearly senile -mixing up his Kurds, Sunni, Shi'a, Al Qa'eda (yes, foreign affairs is his supposed area of speciality!) . And what will happen at 3am he goes to pick up the phone trips over his chamberpot and pulls the phone out of the socket. McCain '08: Ready To Have An Accident On Day One.

Pure works of art. McCain is our next President. The Republican domination of pathetic Dems continues, and for the millionth time in my adult life, I'm really proud of my country!

YES, WE CAN (STRIKE THAT)...YES, WE WILL!!!!!

Compare these maginificent ads with the inevitable 527 ads slamming BO on Wright, not wearing the pin, not "pledging" the pledge of allegiance, his wench's bit about not being proud of this country (at least not until his boney butt started campaigning), his status as the most liberal senator...the list goes on. McCain might pull of a landslide when it's all said and done.

BO, my man (sniff, sniff)...you stink!

Wow!

Both classy ads. The first, "American president Americans have been waiting for" is a clear but subtle jab at Obama and his patriotism issues (Muslim childhood, Revko/God D*#m the US of KKKA, Michelle/"I'm finally proud of our country," no lapel pin, pledge of allegiance, etc.) While I'm for Senator Clinton, if she does not win the nomination, I'm voting for Senator McCain.

As Congressman Murtha says, "Our country has serious problems and we need someone with experience."

Why doesn't McCain splice some of George W. Bush's speeches about no surrender, no retreat, no backing down...maybe a "Bring 'em on" here or there. As long as Bush is in the forefront of people's minds, there is no way Johnny McSame can win this election, no matter how many times he references his POW time!

John McCain claims we never surendered. I guess he forgot about Vietnam where he was captured as POW. Must be the age thing!

It's interesting that one person finds these ads "pure works of art" and another looks forward to the 527 ads slamming Senator Obama?

So, on the one hand, slick advertising for a presidential candidate that plays on emotional themes and essentially ignores the issues facing our country today should be considered some kind of reason that one candidate should be favored over another?

On the other, ads that distort a candidates position's are things that we should anticipate with glee?

Has it really come to this? Is it not possible to look at what a candidate actually says and what he or she offers our country as a leader? Can't we spend at least something more than TV time researching our candidates?

Hey y'all - wait until you hear Senator Obabma's patriotism speech, before you start burying him. Obama's not going to play this game, and when the outdated smear tactics are turned against his campaign, that's when it's going to get interesting. You think these guys haven't studied the crap that has been used since 1980 to elect American presidents? You'd be wrong.

I think that McSaim's ads will appeal to people of his age who sometimes wish for the old days when life was so simple. For today's world, WE NEED A PRESIDENT WHO IS CURRENT, UP TO DATE WITH THE ISSUES AND THE NEEDS OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. AMERICA IS A COUNTRY OF DIVERSE PEOPLE. McSaim doesn't appeal to them.

Actions, my friend, speak louder than words. Sitting in the pew of a racist bigot "and never batting an eye" speaks volumes about what B.O. is really all about. Dems have committed suicide this year, and Barack Obama will go down in history as a bizarre curtain call for a party with no soul, no convictions, and no hope. A party that is fundamentally disconnected from the majority of Americans. What the Democrat party has done to itself (and to this country) in the past 40 years is shameful and sad. It's time the party cans the extreme liberal and left-wing agenda that has so dominated its positions for most of recent history. Point of fact, only two Dems have won the WH in 40 years, both under extenuating circumstances. Carter in the wake of Watergate (only to get the boot 4 years later), and Bubba with the help of a strong third party candidate (he never got a majority of the vote, 42% in 92 and 49% in 96).

Stunning ads!

Great ads...the metaphor of never surrendering to the tyranical monster that is American liberalism works well. This country is in great danger of falling into the hands of despots who are out of touch with what makes America and its people great. I'm feeling much better about McCain's chances in November.

So, McCain is not running as a Republican. Well, that brand is shot to hell now.
Not one mention of the grand old party in these ads. Too ashamed, I guess.

Not one mention that Sen John is running as a Republican. That brand is just too tainted to mention in public. Must be painful to be so ashamed of one's own party.

So?

Kerry awarded the Silver Star and look what republicans did to him.

Where was respect for a real war hero. Oh, thats right, to be a war hero you have to have a (r) after your name.

Posted by: arny | April 1, 2008 12:10 AM

Is that all he has to offer. Old war ads at a time when this country is in so much trouble. It makes me sad that the republican party seem to think that their love for this country out weights everyone else's. We are supposed to live in a democracy therefore everyone gets to choose. I served in the marines for 8 years but, that does'nt make me any more of an american than someone who gets up everyday to go to work and pay their country taxes. Nice try Mr. McCain but this time I think I will pass....( Your fear tactics won't work).

These ads send shudders down my spine. They're warmongering at its worst. Doesn't McCain get it? What Americans want is a way out of war, not Churchillian declarations of steadfastness. If he can't campaign on more than what these ads offer, then the Dems are a shoo in.

These ads send shudders down my spine. They're warmongering at its worst ~ slipped inside a satin glove.

Doesn't McCain get it? Americans want out of Iraq, not declarations of steadfastness. We want all options on the table, not just those that start with keeping us there.

McCain's an okay guy, but he's old and out of touch with the pulse this country.

Buy the loons are out in full numbers today. Let's hope they have their therapists numbers handy come November when the miserable Democrat Party loses yet another election. The follower of a racist bigot or a conniving, cold-blooded pathological liar...what a pathetic party!

McCain is our next President!

Boy the loons are out in full force today. What's the matter girly-men and sissy liberals, too much testosterone for your taste. Maybe the follower of a racist bigot or a pathological liar is more to your liking!

McCain is our next President!
