'Dancing' Leaves Las Vegas
And, in Week 3, Wayne Newton was finally laid to rest.
After two weeks of being the clear-cut worst performer in the group, it was beginning to look like Mr. Las Vegas had enough fan support to ride out, well, who knows what? (Truthfully, one had to begin to wonder if the viewers were actually voting for his partner, the fabulous Ms. Cheryl, who has become a celebrity in her own right after winning this show twice. After all, she was leading, she was doing all the real dancing, who could blame people if their eyes were fixated on her and missed Wayne altogether?)
Bottom two: Wayne and Floyd Mayweather. A reasonable bottom two, absolutely. But it raises the same question that bubbled up in Week 2. What's up with Mark Cuban? I'd like to know the demographics on his fan base. Are there a whole lot of bored NBA fans tuning in every week? I'd say it's the "sports factor" -- jocks seem to do well on this show, regardless of their talent (Clyde Drexler, anyone?) -- but this is a team owner escaping the bottom two in favor of a boxing champion. Hmmmmmm. Very curious to see if this continues in Week 4.
Oh, and tween alert: (avert your eyes, all those who are horrified by the likes of High School Musical et. al):
If you DVR'd the show so that your Disneyfied children could catch the much promoted (on Monday's show) appearance of "Hannah Montana" -- as in, Miley Cyrus, she of the hottest concert ticket in the land -- go ahead and delete. This performance belonged to daddy Billy Ray (who got way too far in Season 4 thanks to his fan base. Or maybe his daughter's fan base). The song performed was his (Ready Set Don't Go). And "Hannah Montana" was just daddy's little girl, crooning along.

When judging Cuban's dancing, let's not forget that the man had a hip replaced 8 or 9 weeks ago. How many of us would be ready to be out on a dance floor, much less one on national tv, at that point?

Mark Cuban's doing a good job and improving. Anyone check on whether this technie has automatic dialing / voting machines like annoying telemarketers use? Just a thought. Poor Wayne tried. Floyd's energy is great!

Wayne was painful to watch, but you could tell he was trying and not just phoning it in (like some of the stars from previous seasons). I think he was genuinely crushed that he didn't do better. But he behaved with such class and dignity--I was really impressed by the guy. I'm sorry Cheryl didn't have a partner she could win with, but she's also a class act and I'm glad Wayne had her. Maybe next time.

Cuban should be doing well; he is a former dance instructor. If he is recovering from a recent hip replacement, that would be why he isn't in the lead. As he gets more comfortable with his new hip that should change.

Cuban is doing well because he has a blog that is quite popular in the IT and sports world, and is encouraging his tech-savvy readers to vote en masse.
