'Dancing With the Stars': Was Cheetah Girl Cheated?

Clearly we are not equipped with the magic divining gene with which to ascertain who gets to keep dancing with the sorta famous folks week after week. Which is to say, whaaat?? Jane Seymour, felled by "food poisoning" gets to stay? Sabrina Bryan, clearly among the top of the heap, gets the boot? What's up with that?

Meh, what can you expect? It's a popularity contest. The Disney Channel aficionados/Cheetah girl freaks (like my 6-year-old niece, an avowed Sabrina fan) weren't the ones hitting the text messages, voting. (Past their bedtimes, maybe?) And clearly, the "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" fans were.

Sabrina was no match for "Medicine Woman."

Your thoughts? If Sabrina shouldn't have been sent packing, then who should've gone in her place? Or was justice served? Do you think Jane repeating over and over again, "I'm 56" earned her the sympathy-she's-good-for-her-age vote? (I've always hated the "she looks good for her age" bit. You either look good or you don't, no matter the date on your license.)

But notwithstanding the surprise ending, this was a show short on suspense and long on filler: Backstage confessionals. Yawn. The dancers got to put the judges on the spot. (Marie wanted to know why Len didn't think she could do the show. Len told her that basically, he thought she was "past her sell-by date." Ouch.)

And we had a little cross-promotion going on, with Carrie Ann and Bruno previewing their new show, "Dance War," and their singing dancing wunderkinds showing the audience what real, trained dancers -- as opposed to C-listers looking for a career boost -- can do. Freeze-dried Barry Manilow showed up to peddle some songs, and host Tom Bergeron had the good grace to observe cynically, "by an amazing coincidence his CD is in stores now." Now that's truth in advertising.

On what planet can anyone think that Marie Osmond deserves to stay and Sabrina is off? And how many times will Jane Seymour and Marie make reference to the fact that they are older than the other competitors? It is not like they are the only people over 40 or even 50 to be on this show. I mean Wayne Newton is like what, 100?

I can't complain too much since I didn't vote and never have for any of the competition shows but this does dissapoint me quite a bit. This pair was the most dynamic of all with amazing chemistry on the dance floor.
Jane was bore-tastic & Marie should retire just to save her health.
My question is: Who exactly voted for those two?
Recount!

I know this is a popularity contest, not a dance contest, so I'm not surprised or outraged. But I do think think this eliminates a lot of my incentive to watch the program. I mean, I still get to hope to see someone trip, faint, or otherwise make an idiot of themselves, but if the better dancers like Helio and Mel B start getting voted off now just because they lack the fan base--yikes. On further consideration, maybe a final with Jane and Marie would be hilarious.

Let me know when this has any national relevence. A dance show? Sadly I am sure there are more people paying attention to this than those engaged in essential civic discourse. Perhaps the voting is rigged so the national outcry boost ratings. Just turn off the TV if you value your personal self respect.

In defense of Jane, I think she is one of the best dancers in the competition, regardless of age. This past week was not her best (I wonder if she was already feeling ill?) and given that, I would have understood if she'd been voted off. But look at all of her other dances! She shows so much more grace and elegence than the Cheetah girl. I didn't mind Sabrina but she just doesn't have the long, elegent lines of a dancer. Jane does. End of story. I don't think it is just older people who are voting for Jane in empathy either. I'm 25 and she is my favorite in the competition. I'm also a Dr. Quinn fan, grew up watching it, and she will always be Dr. Mike to me. But even if i wasn't a fan already, I would still enjoy her performances. And yes, I will continue to vote for her.

Barry Manilow and his plastic surgery sang more than a few sour notes. My preteen son, without looking up from the computer in another part of the room, said (a la Randy Jackson) "He's pitchy!"

I was surprised and shocked!

Sabrina should have never been put on the show to begin with. She is not an amateur and the voters are keeping the show honest.
ABC is not living up to what they said the show was supposed to be when it began. The people who dance with the stars are supposed to be amateurs. Having said this I don't think she was liked very much and was to cocky in thinking she had it wrapped up. Voters don't like to be told who is going to win.

Posted by: RLN | October 31, 2007 2:06 PM

For the person who said that the stars have to be amateurs, I never saw that in the rules. It merely states that they have to be "somewhat" celebrities who are not professional dancers...doesn't mean they can't have experience or dancing abilities that are far superior than another star. Sabrina was the best and this show is ridiculous...Seriously enough with the stupid backstage fillers, no one cares!

My attention is on Cameron and Helio now, if they go, I'm so done with this show.

Posted by: Jessica | October 31, 2007 2:13 PM

Well I really WAS shocked last night! I did vote, but I voted for Mel and Maksim because I thought they were the best performance, period. However, I figured Sabrina would get enough to stay, she truly has been the most consistent! Marie got a sympathy "pass" for her fainting last week, but Jane's past her sympathy week for her mother passing, especially when she decided to continue on with the show. I'm looking for Jane's departure next week.

Mario Lopez was vilified for having taken dancing lessons as a child (he was a child actor, duh) and he and his partner were so much better than Emmitt Smith that it was laughable.

Now, it's the same thing. Sabrina is in a touring group and people are bellyaching because she got the shaft? She should not have been on the show.

Given that she was heads and shoulders above anyone else, and she was allowed to participate, her departure is absurd. But then, so is the voting process.

Why should you be allowed to vote so many times for one pair? If you have seven pairs, there should be six votes, and only being allowed to vote for one pair once, and so forth.

Emmitt Smith was a joy to watch! So smooth and that smile .Not so for Mario. He has lloked the same for years.

I finally get to say my peace about Sabrina. The truth is, she is a lovely girl and a wonderful sport, but a horrible ballroom dancer.

Does anyone look at their feet? Obviously, the judges do not. Her foot work was non-existant. Anyone can look good by focusing on one part of their body (in Sabrina's case, her upper body), that does not make you a dancer. I'm sorry, but in all honesty, she "clodded" around. It wasn't pretty to watch and painful if you understand the figures.

The straight forward issue is... Jane actually has technique. The judges show a tremendous amount of bias against her, because she is slower. She is slower because she is actually trying to dance correctly. Thank you, Tony, for that! Melanie B has technique... Max does a good job! Jennie could be better if she works harder and focuses; but Derek is fantastic and easy on the eyes, so who cares!

Helio is a naturally good dancer, needs to work less on flash, more on foot work and he will go all the way. Julianne is a superior dancer and choreographer, so she is hard to beat... let's face it.

Edyta and Jon... you are great dancers and instructors and well... good luck.

I was disappointed that Sabrina got the boot - and I was surprised. She was a good dancer, and it made for a good show so I watched it - one of two shows I watch. Not so sure if I will tune in as faithfully. And I agree with the article - goes to show you who the audience is - I can't imagine any other reason that Jane or Marie would still be on the show.

Posted by: KR | October 31, 2007 3:39 PM

Sabrina should not have qualified to be on the show in the first place. If she is not a professional dancer she's close to it. The show is for inexperienced non-professional dancers. The only professional is the instructor, or should be.

I think the show is getting old and people are far too critical, as are the judges.

I watch the show every week because its entertaining. I like seeing the star's put themselves out there. It's very brave of them to stand up for all of the criticism they receive. I think we should applaud them and thank them for entertaining us.

My hat goes off to them

has anyone noticed how marie & johnathon are always holding hands, or standing with his arm around her?

Posted by: geannib | October 31, 2007 7:05 PM

Very Bad! Sabrina among the best. Marie should have gone. Jane, in case anyone failed to recognize her during the group dance, was athletic, and awesome.

Posted by: Marshall Smith | October 31, 2007 7:10 PM

Sorry, Hon ,that it bothers you to hear that someone looks good for their age. Especially for women, the bottom line is age plays a factor. Look at the majority of 20 year olds, and most are good looking. Look at the majority of 56 year olds, then not so much? Why? Because age tends to draw attention to all that other stuff that people were ignoring before in favor of their pretty thick hair and glowing skin and eyes. Sucks, I know, I'm there myself.
Sabrina IS a professional dancer. Some of the stuff the Cheetah girls do are dance routines, and she gets paid for it. Marie might have gotten paid for that 30 years ago, but not recently. She should never have been on the show. As for viewer participation, I think that's BS. We have judges for a reason.

Posted by: Diana | October 31, 2007 9:12 PM

I want Sabrina back!!!! Don't know if I can watch anymore. Hate Mel, Jennie is eh, I'm going to have to root for Helio... So sad.

Posted by: JJE | October 31, 2007 10:33 PM

People, please! Being a Cheetah Girl on the Disney Channel is a far cry from ballroom dancing.

Posted by: DC | November 1, 2007 10:48 AM

I don't remember this much outrage about Drew Lachey, who was just as much of an amatuer as Sabrina, and he won the whole thing. So basically, the viewers holding it against her are being idiots. Every year there is at least one person from a touring with psuedo hip hop dance moves background. Joey McIntyre the first year, Drew, the second, Willa Ford and Joey Lawrence the third, and Joey Fattone last year. This is the first time one has been clearly the best (I'm sorry but Drew was not better than Stacy, he just had a partner who was a better choreographer), so I really don't know what this complaining is about.

Sabrina is the best dancer. you need to bring her back. you don't bring her back I'll turn to something new maybe not better but not to watch you cheat someone out of a chance to win. I have a feeling this dancing with the stars has been rigged
if the person I think is going to win I'll
never watch the dancing with the stars when or I should say if you return next season.I have been told by many they feel the same as I do.

Posted by: sunshine | November 2, 2007 11:01 PM

I was saddened to see Sabrina leave as well. She was an excellent dancer and so full of energy..like a ball of sunshine. I do not have respect for this show anymore...

Posted by: elle | November 2, 2007 11:23 PM

Dancing with the Stars has been the highlight of my evenings! My husband and I just can't watch it anymore since they rooked Sabrina out of it. I don't care if ones think she's a pro...so were all of the boy-band guys. That's not ballroom.

Bring her back and I'm back!

Hey Jean Arthur! Save the age discrimination and your comments.
Wayne Newton 100 years old? Do the math..
