'Desperate' Drama
Wow. For all of the funny, outrageous moments that "Desperate Housewives" is known for, there was one stellar scene that reminded us why "DH" is considered a drama.
Whether it was the writing, acting, directing or editing - or probably a combination of all of these - the moments when Bree approaches Danielle and asks whether Danielle wants to hold her newborn son are perfect. Danielle is vulnerable and hesitant and Bree is so uncharacteristically unsure. Pretty powerful and poignant, don't you agree?
The other "revealing" moments seemed weaker: Susan's confrontation with Mike's dad in prison seemed to have undertones of whiny-ness that Susan just can't seem to shake and Lynette's last scene in the garden when she sees her nemesis, the dead possum.
It would have been more uplifting had Lynette found the possum in a trap and freed it, but that probably would have been more of the expected ending -- and "Desperate Housewives" often delights in giving us the dark and the unexpected, no? Was it too much of a downer?

A Halloween hoot: Danielle dresses up as her mother. (ABC/Ron Tom)
Otherwise, there was some pretty funny stuff: Gaby and Carlos arguing over the money he had embezzled from his business and had hidden from her (and the way Gaby throws back at Carlos: If you take the money and sleep with someone, and that were a job, what would you call it?); Danielle dressing up as her mother for Halloween. Come to think of it, Danielle (Joy Lauren) was a major player in this episode, and not just because she gave birth -- do we want to see more of her in future episodes?
Someone to see more of: Victor's dad, Milton (played by Mike Farrell). He's only been in a few scenes, but he's strong -- has that understated manipulator down perfectly.
But why did "DH" run a Halloween party the weekend after Halloween? Don't they have calendars on Wisteria Lane?
Most implausible scene: the doctor visiting the Scavo home to give Lynette and family good news. When's the last time you heard of anyone whose doctor had time to make a house call? Another unlikely bit: Victor,
tearing out the pages of his calendar to show Gaby he would make time for her. Guess it wouldn't have been as dramatic if he had deleted screens from his wireless device -- but paper -- so years-ago! And, c'mon, with the way they spend money, how long does Carlos think he and Gaby can live on a paltry $9.5 million?
Overall, "Now I Know, Don't Be Scared" was a strong episode... and Edie, who had been off-screen for much of the show, set the wheels in motion for the future. What are your preferences, DH fans? Do you want Edie or Carlos or Gaby or Victor to prevail?
Other thoughts?

The possum was a clear surrogate for Lynette's cancer. So it died rightfully.
I predict that Mike's demons return and he kills Susan, thereby putting her out of our misery. It would work nicely if he used one of Bree's guns and framed her.

it was a terrific episode! the halloween party was hilarious. the only weak part of the episode was - as usual - susan's irritating insistence in dealing with mike. i just wanted her to shut up.
