'Heroes': Baffling, but Better

When "Heroes" gets more confusing, does that mean it's getting better?

Well, then, let's chalk up last night's episode as "better."

I suppose the best news of the night is that Hiro is finally out of 17th century Japan, although not before we had to sit through one last mini-episode of "The Last Samurai." Hiro did a lot of transporting throughout the show (at one point to avoid a possible beheading) but it was only at the end that he made it back to modern times, ditching his girlfriend and reuniting with BFF Ando at the office.

Kensei, a.k.a. Adam, also transported forward where he met up with Peter Petrelli who's still stuck in a de-populated New York circa 2008. Their mission: save the world.

Maya (Dania Ramirez), you look confused. Join the club. (NBC)

Peter and his cute Irish girlfriend had to endure a horrible power scrubbing before they were split up. Will we see the Irish lass again or is she stuck in the horrible future?

After dreaming of Mommy and birthday cakes, it looks like Peter is finally over his amnesia.

Big episode for Matt (Greg Grunberg's Emmy-award entry perhaps?) who managed to out-nightmare his own Daddy, thus pulling Molly out of her coma.

Bad episode for Noah. He set fire to those depressing paintings that predicted his own demise and, back home in California, he learned that Claire was being a bad daughter with that new boyfriend of hers. It looks like the Bennetts are moving again!

How cute was it that Claire and Fly Boy were making out listening to emo-rock on their Sprint cellphones. (Subliminal message: Buy Sprint products and you too can kiss a pretty girl who can re-generate).

DL - still alive? Or is Niki just seeing things? But then DL's shot again? Help, "Heroes" fans, I'm losing my grip on the plot line!

Oh, wait, "Heroes" voice-over guy just told me my questions will be answered in NEXT week's episode. Phew.

Of course DL isn't still alive. I thought Parkman's daddy standing there staring at Niki (not to mention Mohindrance pointing out her talking to nobody bit) made that pretty clear. But I also liked the fact that the writers finally gave Parkman some power/character development that didn't entail alternate futures or waving a gun around. Speaking of which, I've continually been amused by the fact that the Company issues those giant custom hand cannons as standard sidearms. The show's armorer must have a thing for competitive target shooting.

Apparently, immortality is included under regeneration. So Peter will live forever as will Claire(but as a 16 year old). She'd better learn to sword fight, or else someone will take her Quickening.

Confusing dialog:
Mohinder: I'm secretly trying to bring down the Company

Bob: Well then, you'd better take this gum.

Questions:
Is Mrs. Petrelli immune form the virus too?

Are the handguns there due to product placement?

"take this gun" not gum (damned laptop keyboards). Although giving gum to a saboteur makes more sense than giving him a gun.

Oh yeah, that made me suspect that Bob knew what Mohinder was up to all along. He sure didn't seem surprised when the good doctor dropped his little bombshell.

Ok, so didn't they do the apocalyptic future thing last year? They're saving the world from mass destruction again?

Posted by: bigeugene | November 6, 2007 12:32 PM

23112 is correct--D.L. was a Morrie induced nightmare to insight Nikki to go all Jessica on Bob's ass. Clearer now?

It was a better episode. I'm really looking forward to next week's with more explanations re: Adam and Elle.

Hiro thinks Kensei is dead. Since we know that Kensei is alive as Adam, and he threatened to hurt everyone Hiro loves, I think that there will be a big showdown between Hiro and Kensei/Adam.

It was implied that Adam worked for the Company and was behind turning Matt's father evil. I wonder what Adam will do with Peter. I don't think Adam wants to save the world.

Why didn't Peter use his powers when he and his girlfriend were captured in the future?

"Why didn't Peter use his powers when he and his girlfriend were captured in the future?"

Peter didn't really even know who he was until his mom got hold of him, and it seemed like every time he manifested any of his powers, it was purely reactive/ instinct, not intentional.

John, we don't know if Peter is still in post-apocalypse NYC. He teleported to the room full of furniture, remember? Who knows where that's located and at what point in time.

What's confusing is the whole time-travel paradox , a la Lost. Peter would probably not even have been born when Adam hatched his plan with Morrie (assuming Morrie and Adam are the same age). What affect will Peter's traveling back in time have on the future of the Company and everyone else. Oh yeah, and Peter was dead before he was alive in post-apoc NYC. See what I mean.

There's something going on with this Adam guy. I feel like there's a chance that HE'S Claire's real father, not Nathan Patrelli. I guess I think that because they both have regenerative powers and they're both blonde. I could easily be wrong, but if I'm right, Peter Patrelli isn't her uncle, and they're free to pursue some kind of relationship, which was weirdly hinted at last season.

Anyone know where a screen shot of peter's scrub down is available???? mmmmm...how dirty boys REALLY get clean!

Posted by: Petershots | November 6, 2007 04:11 PM

Since "Adam" appears to be immortal, if not really just very long-lived w/regenerative powers, he and Claire could be related, but probably through either Claire's mother or even Peter's bloodline. I'm almost starting to think that Adam is the progenitor of all the Heroes bloodlines, since he started out in feudal Japan and could have even started Hiro's bloodline while there. Think of the implications if Adam is the great-grandfather (many times over) of ALL the Heroes? Makes me think of sci-fi writer Phillip Jose Farmer's detailed and interlocking "histories" of all the classic 18th-20th century heroes, such as Tarzan, Doc Savage and the Scarlet Pimpernel.

OK, the fact that Hiro is out of feudal Japan is good and the surprise ending which at least tries to give the dreadful Hiro in feudal Japan arc a point is better. But as much as I like this show - and the shots of Peter in the shower - I can't help but feel we've been down this road before. You know the whole jump to the future to see that someone did a bad, bad thing to New York City which only the cheerleader can prevent - seems to me the reruns started before the writer's strike.

Maybe I was in a grumpy mood when watching but my reaction to the Parkman scene when he was being all sad about his Dad, saying about how his Dad made him feel like he was "too slow, too fat" was to yell out in my best Bette Davis voice, "But'cha are Matt, but'cha are!" Again that whole thing with Parkman and Molly makes me feel like I'm watching a Dateline Predator Raw episode.

Again this is my second favorite show on TV ("Lost" is number one with a bullet) but For the first time last night I began to worry about the fate of the show. I hate posts that talk about leaping over certain aquatic species but damn if I don't smell some salt water in the air. Still there was some good, such as Claire and Fly-Boy, the paintings and the ending.

I'm having trouble with the repeat plot points as well.. oh boy new york's in trouble again, better find the cheerleader... there's gotta be something else the heros can save!!! but i do really like the show, so i'm sticking it out for now at least. i also was definitely glad to see that the hiro/kenzei subplot actually had a sort of point... finally!

Posted by: | November 6, 2007 11:00 PM

Did Kenzei really teleport? I just thought he had just lived through all the centuries since he's indestructible... though it's nice to see that he also seems to have found the fountain of youth.. which must be a bonus of being indestructible.

Also, how did Bob know Parkman had the same powers as his dad and not just the hearing thing? Up until now, it doesn't seem that the type of power a person has is genetic (though obviously just having a power runs in certain families, until now has anyone had the same power as one of their kin?).

Posted by: SeaTac | November 6, 2007 11:04 PM

I really enjoyed the episode.

Parkman actually being able to pull something off was both a shocker and welcomed.

I really really really don't want Noah Bennette to die. Although someone should tell him that burning the paintings don't mean it won't happen. Also, does flyboy seem creepy to anyone else? There's something about that flyer that just aint right.

If Peter's mom doesn't have some kind of indestructable power as well. She sure is tough because that woman has lived thru 2 destructions of NY by now.

I think the end of the world theme might be recurring because whenever the heros stop the world from ending one way, they don't necessarily stop the threat of it ending. So when Peter didn't blow up, something else was set in motion. The company was able to develop a virus that ends the world. When they stop that something else will be in play. It's like final destination. It's just interesting to see how they go at it in the next season.

I wouldn't really consider an exploding man and a virus developed by the company to "cure" heroes, that appears to have crossed over to the general population, the same story line. 24 had a nuclear explosion season 2, and a virus season 3. They have to save the world from something to be heroes!
