'Heroes': As for New Episodes, It's Dead to Us

Do we honestly believe that Nathan is dead? Do we honestly believe that Niki is dead?

Yeah, those appeared to be real bullets that penetrated the Flying Man just as he was about to expose the Company (did no one in that room see that trench-coated assassin?). And it sure looked as if Niki got all-blowed-up after saving Monica.

If they do somehow survive, who knows when they'll return -- thanks heaps, writers' strike. Mr. NBC voice-over guy said new episodes return "in 2008." Could be January (doubt it). Maybe March. We may be Hero-less until next fall. As for that being the last episode for a while, I'd say it was a tad underwhelming.

Sylar was a trigger-happy fool who wound up getting a hold of Claire's valuable blood. Yes, indeed, he's "back" (what a cliché) and it looks as though he'll be a major player in Volume 3 -- "Villains" -- whenever that airs.

Maya, the remaining half of the Wonder Twins, almost went down after taking a bullet from Sylar, but Suresh shot her up with Claire's blood before the bad man made off with it. So Maya, and those messy tears of her, live on.

The world is safe from the deadly virus thanks to a team effort by Hiro, Matt, Nathan and Peter, who made a helluva catch before that vial could crash to the floor (but does his Irish lass remain in a hellish alternate future?) Adam, I assume, is gone for good -- stuck underground for eternity. As for Elle: She continues to deal with Daddy issues and we learn what a very bad Daddy he was -- making her light up neighborhoods against her will at age 7. Now that's just plain mean.

Looks as if Noah's going back to the Company to save his family -- even though no one in his family is happy about it.

So, we bid farewell to the Heroes for now -- giving us months, possibly many months, to think about just how Niki and Nathan survived their various calamities.

We were promised two Heroes would bite the dust, but it was surprising that Ali Larter was one of the two killed off... I thought she was pretty popular with male fans and one of the "bigger" names on the show... I thought for sure Maya was a goner, especially with everyone recently hating on the wondertwins. Though we didn't actually see her die so who knows...

I agree that it was a pretty underwhelming episode. It still feels like the show is going in circles instead of moving forward, but I do hope it's back soon.

Makes sense to me to have Niki die. She'd lost her powers and had the virus, she still had been dealing with the conflicting personalities, and (most importantly) having both her and D.L. die under what were relatively mundane but criminal causes sets up Micah as a next-gen Hero who has true cause to Make The World A Better Place. Also, even without superpowers, Niki actually went out as a real hero. I think bringing her back would take the impact out of her sacrifice. And yes, I think Nathan's dead. Oh, and Adam's fate reminds me of how Sloane ended up on Alias...nice bit of tieback there. :)

"It still feels like the show is going in circles instead of moving forward..." Amen to that, SeaTac.

Can anyone name one of the new characters introduced in this "Volume" (other than Adam) that did anything to advance or enhance the series one iota?

Zilch. Nada. I thought so.

(Technically, Adam doesn't count because he is considered one of the original heroes. His presence was implied in the first season even if he didn't appear.)

This show really needs to get back to basics and focus on the core characters we've been invested in since the beginning. Elle, the Mexican twins, Micah's little friend, West, and even Molly from Vol. I, are just junking up the story lines.

I hope the writers are following this blog. Wise up, Kring!

I liked Elle as an addition to the cast and her dad is the perfect evil bureaucrat.

I think Nikki is gone for good. I believe Ali Larter was being let go from the show because the writers just couldn't think of anything interesting to do with her. I believe Nathan will probably came back, I mean his brother has absorbed power of the magic blood from Claire and Adam.

I was hoping that Sylar would be killed. I'm really sick of his character. Mohinder too!

We all know that Nathan only needs Peter's blood to live. I just wonder how many episodes will go by before they show that. Nathan also needs a haircut. Who shot him? Noah?

Posted by: Leya | December 4, 2007 1:48 PM

It sure looked like Noah to me, Leya. Guess old HRG is a Company tool again.

Too bad Peter never was around Linderman, then he could just heal Nathan. Of course, all he has to do is cut his finger and press it into one of Nathan's wounds to start the Claire/Adam healing process. This would be another bit of Christ-like metaphor for Peter...such as his sacrifice for the greater good last season, seeing into the hearts (and minds) of others, ascending into the heavens, temptation by evil, and now the power of the blood.

And speaking of the assassin...could it have been Noah? His first assignment back with the company to prove his loyalty? After all, if Peter's mom was willing to sacrifice him if needed...wouldn't she be able to go along with Bob and have Nathan killed before he spills the beans on everyone?

Now Elle, who I though was a little over the top with the "look at me...I'm a little sadistic psycho," might actually be coming around to working with the good guys. She could still keep her edge (like Wolverine or Punisher) while trying to stop Daddy and his company. Nobody says she has to convert to being a good person, just less inclined to killing innocents. The look on her face when Shuresh said she had saved him and Molly was the validation she had always wanted and never gotten from Daddy Bob.

Some good potential in this last chapter to move the story and characters forward, but I agree that they need to stop spreading themselves so thin and start focusing main storylines on the big players here. Although I admit I like Micah and his cousin teaming up to fight evil like in the comics. About time someone besides Hiro used their powers for somethings besides an excuse to whine or kill people.

I know it doesn't pay to think too hard about the show, but can anyone tell me why Peter had to rip the vault door off its hinges instead of just walking through it using DL's power? Is that too much to ask?

Posted by: SteveH | December 4, 2007 2:24 PM

Dramatic license, and the writers needed to leave enough time for his brother to get there. Plus, it just looks cool :-)

Posted by: Chaz | December 4, 2007 2:36 PM

Thanks SteveH - I was wondering the exact same thing. Also, I may have seen it wrong, but did Nikki enter the burning building by going through the wall (like DL could do)? That confused me as I don't think she has that power, but I could have seen it wrong.

Did last night's episode have anyone else wondering if Adam was Nathan and Peter's father? I think they would have revealed that if it were the case, though.

I'm also curious as to how long Claire or Adam's blood retains regenerative power once it's injected into someone. I would assume that Nathan would need a new dose at this point, but Noah seemed rather fearless last night days after receiving Claire's blood....

Destroying a virus is decidedly anti-climactic compared to stopping a nuclear explosion. Besides, if the virus got out, all Peter had to do was go back in time by a few seconds and stop it. In fact, all he has to do now is to go back in time to stop Nathan's assassin. But Peter (bless his heart) isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer (and Matt is now the smart one in the group). Can Peter absorb Nathan's courage and decisiveness?

Now that the virus has been destroyed and the future changed, the Irish chick is just another illegal Irish immigrant in NYC. She's probably waiting tables at Ri-Ra.

I, too, suspect that HRG is the assassin. The company seems to be able to transport people all over the county in the blink of an eye, so why can;t he get to Odessa?

Ali LArter is nice to look at, but Nikki didn't add much to the season, so killing her off will help Kring keep the budget down.

Adam can get out. Remember Kill Bill Vol 2?

Posted by: Connor MacLeod | December 5, 2007 10:41 AM

Yeah, I also wondered why Peter didn't just go back and stop the bullets from hitting Nathan. And you're right...pretty sad when Matt is the smart one. Kind of like having a C student be President one day :-)

As to the long-term effects of the healing blood, since it works so fast, I think it probably only works to heal the damage and then is attacked and destroyed by the recipient's immune system. It wouldn't make sense for the recipient to "revert" back to their old damaged self since the damage was physically healed.

As for Adam, I could see him going even more insane from claustrophobia, but over time he should be able to claw his way out. Not a pretty site when he emerges though :-)

Seems like there are two categories of writers on heroes, Bad-ass and Punk-ass. Bad-ass writers have Sylar and Adam go on killing sprees, Nikki ripping dudes in half and DL yanking Linderman's brain right out of his head. Kewl! The Punk-ass writers created Molly and her Two Dads, dumb-as-a-bag-of-hair Peter and the Claire romance plotline. So so lame!

Bad-ass writers rule!

I hope the show has the balls to kill off Molly. What good is she anyway?

Posted by: Amused | December 5, 2007 4:54 PM

Amused...you amused me...LOL! Bad-ass writers rule, indeed!

Posted by: Chaz | December 5, 2007 6:09 PM

Mohinder, Matt, Molly, and Maya move from Manhattan to Minneapolis, or maybe Missoula. Making money as merchants, they melt into the masses and away from my memory.

Posted by: Alli Teration | December 5, 2007 8:49 PM

Can the punk-ass writers please stay on strike while the bad-ass ones return?

Posted by: Connor MacLeod | December 6, 2007 9:52 AM

I was really hoping Peter would be the one to bite. He bores me to tears. Also, even though I don't see how it would advance the plot, I would really like for Christopher Eccleston to come back. FanTAStic!

Posted by: tamerlane | December 7, 2007 12:58 PM

Alli--ha! Maybe Micah can join them, to do his magic modification of machines to help them motor out of Midtown, while Matt mindreads, Mohinder monologues, and Maya gets motherly with Molly. Oh, and they adopt Mr. Muggles, too!

Leya--respectfully disagree about the haircut. Adrian Pasdar is SMOKIN' HOT with the shaggy locks, a great improvement over his preppy politician look. I think they picked the wrong Petrelli brother to spend half the season shirtless.

I think Nathan's mother shot him. She was at the end, all dressed in black, looking frazzled telling someone "it's done".

Posted by: BLH | December 12, 2007 1:00 AM

Nathan's mother? I think she was on the receiving end of the news, not the giving end. I think the Haitian shot him. That Haitian guy - you never know which side he's on.

I've been posting under this nom de blog for a while. It's intentional, and base on the parallels between Connor and Adam Monroe. Anyway, when Adam Monroe claws out of that coffin, I'll take his quickening. The cheerleader will be next. There can be only one.
