'Project Runway': The Gunny Awards

Amy and Herbie rocked the Grammys. Daniel Day-Lewis will drink of the winner's "milkshake" at the upcoming Oscars. But with the last challenge of the "Project Runway" season airing last night, it's time for "The Gunnys."

Named for Washington favorite son Tim Gunn (natty co-host and Corcoran alum), the Official "Channel This" trophy, THE GUNNY, recognizes the highlights and lowlights of the "PR" season as the final four contestants (thanks to a surprise tie) prepare collections for New York Fashion Week. The winners will be announced next week on the day of the reunion show, based on your online comments and our whim. Herewith, the nominees:

BEST WINNING DESIGN
1. CHRISTIAN: For his stunning "Spanish military" black-and-white outfit last night based on the 17th-century Murillo painting. (To recap: This week, the five remaining contestants visited the Met and each created a look inspired by an artwork at the museum.)
2. RICKY LINGERIE: The Levi's design that launched a thousand sniffles.
3. COSTUME CHRIS: The Spandex design for the pro wrestling diva on-the-go.
4. JACK: Not for nothing he's Mr. Menswear. (The Tiki Barber challenge.)
5. VICTORYA: Way back when, she won the Sarah Jessica Parker challenge; by the time we get to Bryant Park, SJP's movie will be right around the corner.

MOST GRACIOUS BUH-BYE
1. SWEET P: Among the Final Five last night, she was the only one Auf'd, for her multicolored dress inspired by Hondecoeter's 17th-century painting "Peacocks."
2. RICKY: Like Johnson's baby shampoo, he produced no tears.
3. ELISA: Her I'm-at-peace au revoir had a certain "je-ne-sais-FWAH!" (still our favorite sound-effect of the season).
4. JACK: Exiting due to illness, he was so classy that we still miss him.

BEST SUPPORTING ROLE IN KEEPING COSTUME CHRIS ON THE SHOW
1. ROBERTO CAVALLI: If the famed designer doesn't give Chris his highest vote last night, Chris and Rami don't deadlock and the Great Costumer goes home -- again.
2. JACK: His departure led to the once-Auf'd Chris's return.
3. TIM GUNN: Without his sage guidance, Chris stumbles like a model snared in a too-long train.
4. THE SANDMAN: Chris naps in the lounge last night while the others toil. (Perhaps Cavalli just has a soft spot for the siesta.)

MOST PREDICTABLE DESIGN
1. RAMI THE MAD DRAPER: Last night, he chose to be inspired by Kallimachos's marble statue of Aphrodite. Wethinks he could have designed that draped dress with his eyes closed and his dress form upside-down.
2. CHRIS: As he himself likes to drone: "Oh, puh-leeez." His pewter costume monstrosity last night -- inspired by an 18th-century Nattier painting of a noblewoman -- was a runway rerun.

WORST TEAM PLAYER (aka THE JEFFREY SEBELIA "ACHIEVEMENT" AWARD)
1. RAMI
2. VICTORYA

THE SANTINO RICE TRASH-TALK AWARD
1. CHRISTIAN
2. RAMI
3. MICHAEL KORS

BEST DESIGN CHALLENGE
1. THE CANDY STORE: PIECES FROM REESE'S
2. SARAH JESSICA PARKER: ONCE BITTEN
3. LEVI'S: THE 501 DASH
4. WWE WRESTLING DIVAS
5. TIKI BARBER SUITS UP
6. THE ART OF FASHION: THE MET

Vote early and often as we gear up for next week's Reunion Show, typically our fave episode of the season. And then we'll look forward to the showdown winner of Rami vs. Chris facing off against Christian and Jillian at Bryant Park.

Fierce.

BEST WINNING DESIGN - CHRISTIAN (absolutely FIERCE!)

MOST GRACIOUS BUH-BYE - ELISA (I wish they showed the spaceship pick her up to return her to her planet)

BEST SUPPORTING ROLE IN KEEPING COSTUME CHRIS ON THE SHOW - JACK (talk about getting a second chance!)

MOST PREDICTABLE DESIGN - RAMI (you're hot but man, show us some range!)

WORST TEAM PLAYER (aka THE JEFFREY SEBELIA "ACHIEVEMENT" AWARD)- VICTORYA The Ice Queen

THE SANTINO RICE TRASH-TALK AWARD - CHRISTIAN (giiirrrll, don't hold back)

BEST DESIGN CHALLENGE - tie: SARAH JESSICA PARKER: ONCE BITTEN and TIKI BARBER SUIT (PLEASE DO A FEW MORE MEN'S CLOTHING CHALLENGES)

MOST OVERRATED - Jillian, I think she's kind of a boring and slightly dated designer, kick her out of the finally and keep Rami and Chris

MOST UNDERRATED - Chris March, I think given time to work on his designs, he put together a good collection that tastefully over the top.

Chris and Rami both produced yawn-inducing designs last night. I've been wondering how sweet p is still on the show. Her design was awful last week, awfuller last night. She can never design like Christian or Chris. Glad she is out. I don't know why Rami is on either. What induced a tie out of his yet-again-draped dress?

Making both Rami & Chris prepare collections for Fashion Week is a safety net for PR and adds a little more drama. They can't be sure w/Chris that he won't show up w/a bunch of his supersized drag queen clothes and at least w/Rami they know everything will be meticulous and tasteful.

On the other hand, everyone else's love of Christian proves that I must know absolutely nothing. The shirt he made last night was the 'Puffy Shirt' from 'Seinfeld'. He stood there talking about how everyting was wearable separately and the judges just nodded like they'd taken a big swig of the kool-aid.

BEST WINNING DESIGN
CHRISTIAN: All the others listed are so boring.

MOST GRACIOUS BUH-BYE
ELISA: I need an attitude from her planet.

BEST SUPPORTING ROLE IN KEEPING COSTUME CHRIS ON THE SHOW

JACK: Leading Man
THE SANDMAN: he. Best Supporting role.

MOST PREDICTABLE DESIGN
RAMI THE MAD DRAPER

WORST TEAM PLAYER (aka THE JEFFREY SEBELIA "ACHIEVEMENT" AWARD)
RAMI: Sweet P cried.

THE SANTINO RICE TRASH-TALK AWARD
CHRISTIAN

BEST DESIGN CHALLENGE
THE ART OF FASHION: THE MET

Posted by: Long on PR | February 14, 2008 1:38 PM

BEST WINNING DESIGN
Abstain -- Jillian/Victorya's Goth-punk overcoat wasn't on the list.

MOST GRACIOUS BUH-BYE
ELISA -- she might've been bat-crap crazy and of questionable talent, but she was always nice, centered and gracious, even in defeat.

BEST SUPPORTING ROLE IN KEEPING COSTUME CHRIS ON THE SHOW
tie: JACK/TIM GUNN

MOST PREDICTABLE DESIGN
RAMI THE MAD DRAPER -- man, I love his work, but he's really been bringing the one-note symphony all season, hasn't he?

WORST TEAM PLAYER (aka THE JEFFREY SEBELIA "ACHIEVEMENT" AWARD)
VICTORYA -- bossy, uncompromising and wrong is a very bad combination.

THE SANTINO RICE TRASH-TALK AWARD
CHRISTIAN -- lord help me, I dislike little Mango, but he does know how to talk poo.

BEST DESIGN CHALLENGE
again, abstain -- the avante-garde pairs challenge where rami-sweepee, jillian-victorya and xtian-chris rocked out both of their outfits was easily the most challenging (nice last minute twist) and provided the overall highest quality of results.

MOST UNDERRATED:
I'm nominating Jillian. Yeah, she made it to the Final 3/4 and has consistently scored high, but I really feel like she's been off the radar when anyone discusses the hard-core talent. It's almost like she's invisible because everybody expects her to do well.

MoST OVERRATED:
I wanted to say Xtian, becasue he annoys me so much, but, dammit, little Mango is just too darn talented. Then I was gonna' say Rami, because he's so one-note, but, dammit, what he does is (to quote Tim Gunn) just gorgeous. Frankly, at this point, other than the "why were they still there" folks (I'm looking at your SweePee), not sure there's anyone to nominate for this one.

My new favorite phrase of the week:
"bat-crap crazy"

Thanks WoW! If I'm running through Old Town Alexandria in nothing but Christian's puffy white shirt, I give the post permission to describe me using that phrase.
