'Celebrity Apprentice': Backstreet Idiots, Part 1

Let's fast-forward to the end, because this must be said: Could the (sad, over, done, totally overdone) Backstreet Boys be any more creepy? Or obnoxious? Or just downright ridiculous?

Really. They get a chance to do prime-time network TV -- even if Trump's ratings are pitiful -- and they promote themselves as world-class idiots. Seriously. You get a call from a music icon and you not only have your road manager dump on him, but you then proceed to press him out for a charity event on getting Vitamin Water? And wheatgrass? I really, really have to assume that these clueless boys actually did this on purpose, in conjunction with Trump, to get themselves some desperately-needed pub. Otherwise, wow. Stupidity in spades.

But as for the show, I must say, it exceeded expectations. It has gotten tired, this celeb thing where they don't really want to be there save for Piers, so paring down to a duel was fun.

The quick-fire came after all the celebs interviewed with CNBC's Erin Burnett and Jim Cramer. No matter how "integrated" and "multi-platform" NBC's news network is, both Burnett and Cramer sold their journalistic credibility down the fame pipleline. And the cutting of the show really didn't showcase either of them well -- it was more than suggested that Cramer liked Carol because she was a hot supermodel and Burnett caved for Adkins because, well, let's do the dialogue:

Trump, after telling Trace he was Erin's favorite: " Do women generally think you're terrific?"
Trace: Yes, sir!

Okay, then. Point made.

The firing was fascinating. Trump, who has been in Lennox Lewis's corner from Day 1, couldn't save him from disastrous interviews. The snippets of Lennox we got were SO skewed toward "He's as dumb as a bag of rocks" that it was truly shocking. There was the whole "ummm. ummm. yeah. y'know. y'know" going on and it was painful to watch. So, Lennox goes south first.

Second firing? Fascinating and very Trump-like. He doesn't even hide behind any faux reason. He cans Carol because the idea of Piers and Trace fighting it out gets his juices going, and he wants the fangs in the finale. Hey, hard to argue with that. He needs his ratings.

So, the finale is next, and the key will be how Trace gets out from under being saddled with the World's Worst and Most Annoying Boy Band. Really, their mommies need to put them in "time out." Their approach to the Vitamin Water charity was obnoxious, and their stupidity about great musicians who came before was inexcusably stupid.

--JENNIFER FREY

P.S. Quote of the night:

Trace, on Piers: "Somebody asked me if he'd stick me in the back and I said, well, he'd stab me in the forehead. You'll see him coming."

I highly suspect the Backstreet Boys were participants of a "test Trace to the limit" punk. This show is scripted and edited to MAKE for the drama you so enthusiastically enjoyed. Your first evidence is a rider that includes requests for multiple types of beer and wine-for a group that includes an recovered alcoholic, a Biblethumper and a person on a strict weightloss diet.

Posted by: Kathryn | March 21, 2008 12:05 PM

You dared to say something negative about the Backstreet Boys, and this entry was posted on a BSB site. So let me forewarn you that the BSB brigade will probably come out in full force and defend them.

Posted by: Ashlee | March 21, 2008 12:12 PM

I just wanted to say that it was more then a little obvious the BSB were acting and were told to make things difficult for Trace. It is a scripted show that is often poorly edited, so it was painfully obvious from the start. And none of there requests were out of line, and if you watched closely, the rider DID NOT call for 2 rooms, as Trace tried to make it sound like. It asked for a sectioned off area for hair, make-up, etc. Yet another clue this was scripted.

Posted by: Danielle | March 21, 2008 1:38 PM

It's obvious to MOST people that this was acting...on all parts. There are no true "reality shows" anymore. Even Trump has editors working for him. Geez. And I credit BSB for being good actors. They do love to joke around.

Posted by: BSBfan | March 21, 2008 1:41 PM

Ok, why do people take this so seriously? It's reality tv people!! And--tons of editing! I think your little review was alittle to harsh on the Backstreet Boys. Maybe you should re watch it, and this time, look at it as reality tv, with lots of "over acting" and "editing". It happens on all reality shows!!!!!!

Posted by: Serious | March 21, 2008 1:55 PM

I think it's quite obvious that the BSB are in on it with Trump to add extra strain and drama with Trace. An extra task so to speak. This article title and first few paragraphs are completely pointless when you take that into consideration.

Posted by: Marla | March 21, 2008 2:21 PM

Ok so first of all I'm not sure what your statement of "their stupidity about great musicians who came before was inexcusably stupid." As I recall the boys have been performing since before 1997 so they are not so new that Trace Adkins was before their times, and if anyone who knows the boys saw the show last night. They would know that this was all a SCRIPTED scene I mean come on....The Guys always give to charities,so I don't think that they would be so callous as to act like a bunch of spoiled brats unless they were told to. So don't bash the guys for doing what they were asked.....

Posted by: robin | March 21, 2008 2:35 PM

Anyone around here heard of "reality tv"?? Just checking, because, most of reality tv is scripted and edited to make drama appear!

Posted by: Dee | March 21, 2008 4:30 PM

I have to agree with Kathryn--why else would there be the request for alcohol with AJ being 4-5 years sober now and Nick watching what he eats (and he looks great by the way--good for him. Go on with your wheat grass!)? As Brian pointed out, the requests are for the entire band and crew, not just the four of them. I've been watching these guys for a long time and haven't seen them so quiet and non-conversational. Definitely some editing and "suggested scripting" there. I don't remember hearing anything about Vitamin Water.

Jennifer, have you watched this show before? Or any reality show for that matter? Your word of the day is: melodramatic. Look it up.

PS--the Backstreet Boys were only on for a few minutes. Perhaps you should take your personal bias aside and be a journalist.

Posted by: Lisa | March 21, 2008 7:37 PM

"Perhaps you should take your personal bias aside and be a journalist."

I agree with Lisa on this statement. After watching the show, I saw nothing that could be considered "ridiculous" behavior on the part of the Backstreet Boys. They were polite to Trace, and as someone else pointed out, the list was not only for them; it also included other crew members.

Aside from that, I am confused on how you can judge a muscial group based on five minutes on a reality TV show.

Posted by: Erin | March 21, 2008 8:00 PM

Oh ok yeah! Um they did what they did because it is a competion!! Hello he will have to face those problems on his own. And hello you can say all you want about them, but you can't say anything about what Trace said. I mean come on people!! And who do you think you are calling them stupid, hello what did they ever do wrong? First it was in 2000 and now eight years later like come on!!! Some people really need to learn that they can never top the greatest band alive The Backstreet Boys!! no matter what happens they will always be around like Nick said, As Long As There'll Be Music We'll Be Coming Bck Again!!! And all the fans need to remember is to ALWAYS Keep The Backstreet Pride Alive, just like BSB know they will. Cause BSB is loyal to their fans so their fans are loyal to them!!!

How dare you say anything bad about BSB. You don't have room to talk. Did you ever meet them, know their hardships, or even go to a concert of their? If you ever did you would know that they were just acting. Gosh, I knew all along. Maybe since I'm a fan for 11 years. KTBSPA. Backstreet's are the best band and thanks to you they look bad even though they did nothing wrong.

Posted by: Sarah | March 21, 2008 9:59 PM

the bsb were stupid 10 years ageo and they still are. I feel sorry for Trace !!!!!!!!1

Posted by: randy | March 21, 2008 10:25 PM

I'm still confused on why Trump would hire a group of has-been teenieboppers for a charity event that is catering to celebrities and corporate benefactors - certainly not the BSB demographic. Anyone else anticipating a mass exodus for the restrooms when they take the stage?

Posted by: Ed | March 22, 2008 12:03 AM

Have some of ya'll forgotten that this is a competition? Has this 'journalist' ever given thought that maybe Trump asked BSB to request something ridiculous to put Trace on edge? And also, getting an act that's Trace is not comfortable with? I've been a fan of BSB for 11 years. They're not known to be the kind of guys to be total divas. If you don't believe me, just look up one of their tour riders on the smoking gun. They ask for normal everyday foods for themselves, their band, and their crews (also note the discrepancy of the # of dressing rooms requested and the # asked for on the rider on the show). However, I have actually seen footage from the Saturday Show of Nick actually drinking Wheat Grass (LOL!). He could've requested that from someone else on his own accord. I bet he's doing it by the request of someone else to throw off Trace and get him annoyed though. Also, Note how Nick raises his eyebrows and tries not to bust out laughing by taking a drink of water when Trace questions him about the "wheat grass" request. I know when Nick is trying to keep a cover. That definitely seemed like a Nick Carter-style cover-up. None of us have seen the follow-up to this episode yet. So you don't know if they're being honest or really acting (my vote, from being a fan for so long, and seeing them over the years, is their behavior on that show = acting). Leave your bias at the door, Please.

Posted by: Anna J. | March 22, 2008 1:18 AM

I just laughed cause a fan just said Backstreet Boys look bad because of the critisism they're receiving for their acting skills. Seriously, get a grip. Think for a moment. I'm sure they signed a contract and read a script for this show. They knew good and well some people would not exactly see this role as a favorable one. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and honestly, as a fan of Trace and BSB, I think BSB crossed the line with their "acting". But hey, Trump tried to reach a certain demographic with this episode, I'm sure, and it wasn't the still obsessive, way past their teenage years BSB fans.

Hmm I dont think they're hasbeen at all. I mean have you seen their tour dates? They're only ALL OVER THE WORLD. And they must not be that bad if Trump asked them to be on the show. I mean they didnt just come in on their own. Some people need to learn the facts before they write anything ignorant.

Posted by: | March 22, 2008 1:43 PM

sad? over? done? totally overdone? Really.. are you sure? A good journalist does some homework before posting an article.. clearly you are not much of an expert. Go get your facts about the BSB before writing a ridiculous rant which lacks absolutely any credibility.

The backstreet boys have successfully launched their 6th album and are now touring the world. How many bands can you say that about?

Posted by: saijal | March 23, 2008 5:20 AM

LOL!! I cannot believe this writer thought the BSB were being genuine! It's called television and they were clearly acting. If you knew anything about the band, you would know that they are one of the most down to earth and humble groups out there.

Posted by: Kiran | March 23, 2008 5:40 AM

BSB were totally obnoxious on this show...came across as very immature and demanding even for a charity event...Would this group be acting this way for publicity? I highly doubt it - they sure are a highly hated group now. I hope the Brit doesn;t win this show because of the bsb acting up... Go Trace!!!

Posted by: Roshni | March 23, 2008 10:43 AM

Regardless if the Back Street Asses were acting or not, it DID NOT help their career. I wouldn't buy their music now for 10 cents.

Posted by: AnneLouise | March 23, 2008 1:38 PM

How dare you say anything bad about the boys??
They don't need any help in publicity...if they did, they wouldn't have been around for 15 years, and still fill up the stadiums where they play..if anything they helped that pitiful show get some audience by getting their fans to watch it.

Posted by: BSB FAN | March 23, 2008 10:00 PM

FYI: BLOGs are not innately supposed to be "journalism," objective, or "just the facts" (though some may be). If a BLOG is like anything related to "news", it is more akin to a column, where readers purposefully seek the opinions of their favorite writers.

There are other places to be fanatical about BSB.

Why not leave this BLOG for true fans of Jennifer?

And truly, I find it incredibly ironic that BSB fans here will claim that the BSB had to be acting because "if you knew the band" you'd know they could never be so awful. They must have been acting because "reality TV" is not real. Uh huh. And the ways you "KNOW" the band--those ARE real, right?

Bands' images are handcrafted to create a certain audience and appeal. How can any fans claim they "know" anything about a band?

Bottom-line: whether they were acting or not, and whatever you think you know about celebrities, including BSB, it's all crafted, read FAKE, to some degree.

A fan is only ever a bystander to crafted behaviors, and never truly can "know" a celebrity.

How lame.

Could this BLOG be anymore creepy!?!?

Posted by: Manuela | March 24, 2008 10:19 AM

What I'm actually hoping might happen is that the visiting Country Music All-Stars might pick up the instruments they have autographed for auction, begin to play them, and entertain the heck out of the crowd - while Trace tells the BSB that they can just stay in the green room and drink their wheat grass juice because their services are no longer needed. Let's hear Trace's deep voice say "BSB - You're FIRED!"

Posted by: JEAN | March 24, 2008 1:58 PM

Wow, how dare a group of performers who need to be in good health and at high energy levels for their performance ask for such crazy things as "vitamin water" and "wheatgrass." How dare they attempt to take care of themselves. And never mind their ridiculous food requirements, like "a small fruit tray," "a small veggie tray," and "a tray of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches." Don't they know that this is for charity? In return to their free performance where all ticket sales will go to Trace and Piers's charities, they should ask for nothing more than tap water and saltines.

Seriously, most of the things they listed can be picked up at the local 7-11 for cheap. Vitamin water? Honestly, they sell that everywhere. Wheatgrass? There was a jamba juice that sells wheat grass shots right down the street, less than 200 feet away from the hotel they were meeting. It is New York, after all. Trace spent more time complaining about the wheat grass then it would have taken him to physically walk over to the store and pick some up. And who's fault is that? The BSB for making a simple request, or Trace Adkins for injecting drama into the situation and acting as though they were asking him to move the Earth and Sky?

Methinks that the author doth protest too much. Their requests were all reasonable, cheap, easy to find, and conductive to a better performance. I'm sure that Trace is a hundred times more demanding and picky when he takes his daughter to a restaurant than the BSB have ever been before a performance.

Posted by: Shocked | March 25, 2008 7:41 AM

One more note: If this is really "all for charity," then why is Trace chartering not one, but TWO private jets? Why not fly them in first class, and tell them, "Suck it up, it's all for charity." Heck, why not fly them in coach?

Trace quibbled a lot about whether the BSB would really "need" things like vitamin water and sandwiches. I think they do. Vitamins and water are pretty darn necessary. But if "need" is really such an issue, do Trace's passengers really "need" two private jets? Why charter two private jets which would each cost tens of thousands of dollars, and then quibble over a few bottles of vitamin water that costs only a dollar or two apiece? It's blatant hypocrisy, and really manipulative editing.

Posted by: Shocked | March 25, 2008 7:50 AM

HA! I absolutely LOVE all of the comments defending BSB on here. TRUE, DEDICATED fans know our boys aren't REALLY like that. And even if they did ask for wheatgrass, who's to say editing and trace's "I'm so much better than them" attitude didn't play a role in spinning them the wrong way? And the Backstreet Boys are FOUR PEOPLE who have a large band who travels with them as well. I don't see why getting them a few bottles of beer, some tea, and some room temperature water is that big a deal. Heck, throw in some wheatgrass, like that is REALLY gonna ruin trace's chances of winning. KTBSPA!

Posted by: Divya | March 26, 2008 6:15 PM

The journalist and bloggers here are ABSOLUTELY ridiculous. First thing, if you watch a show as ridiculously stupid and unrespected as THE APPRENTICE, then you seriously have no business judging anyone else. I have many points to go off of by your remarks about the backstreet boys but i will start with this: To the blogger who wrote "people who say 'they know the backstreet boys' really don't"-- that's just because you're NOT a fan and you don't know. BSB are INCREDIBLY close with their fans. they have a fan phone line, which you can call whenever, they go on their fan club EXTREMELY often to chat with fans and post many video blogs, and they really have no problem meeting fans IN PERSON. I have met the boys 3 times in my life, one time i was with AJ for over an hour and a half, and they are seriously the most genuinely nice people I have ever met. They have all the fame and money in the world and they really don't care or are pompous at all. In fact..i will have VIP tickets this summer and will meet them again. So moving on from that point, this was completely scripted just like ALL OTHER REALITY SHOWS EVER..first things first, NO ONE watches the apprentice that are of importance anyway, so it definitely did not ruin their career. And you said "you wouldn't buy their albums anymore" after you said they were already "has-beens" ..so did you even think they had a new album, anyway? And the DEFINITION of a has-been is when someone needs to go on the celebrity apprentice and compete with other celebrities to not be fired by DONALD TRUMP (WHO CARES?) for money. The boys are in for a good laugh whenever and I'm sure they are already laughing over all of your ridiculous and stupid comments. And for the quote "The World's most annoying and worst boyband"- honey, are you serious? They are BY FAR..not even in comparison..the most successful boy band, EVER, to date. in fact they are on the list of top 10 successful bands EVER in history..over 100 million albums sold. WAY more than nsync, 98 degrees, LFO, all the other 90s groups, and way more than any of the newcomers of the millenium. Look up the list-- they outbeat the beatles, madonna, britney spears, just to name a few. IT took them 17 hours to get out of an airport one time because their fans were hanging on their airplane. They are the only band EVER to close down times square because too many fans were clogging up the streets and they feared someone would die. Good journalists do research before making completely ridiculous and WRONG remarks so I really hope that you learn that after taking someone else's job at the washington post. And also.. really, who cares about Trace? You ask any girl in america if they'd rather be with a BSB or trace, and i'd guarantee they'd go "BSB! Who's Trace?" Last thing..BSB fans ARE NOT fans you want to mess with. We have been with the guys through thick and thin (and through all their issues that you are obviously not familiar with) for 15 years and care a lot about them..it has been declared many times that they have more staying power and long-lasting fans than just about every other band in history. So don't mess.

And also..the guys NEVER ask for or have that much stuff in their dressing rooms/backstage. And yes, i would know. I'm not just one of those people that "claim to know people that they love". I am not claiming I know them- I don't. But i have met them several times and have seen the way they acted and the things they ask for--one time they coincidentally were staying at the same hotel as me in Chicago..one time i met them at a club in my own city..things like this really do happen. SO before you go and judge someone about appearing on a show that NOBODY CARES ABOUT..then learn to actually reasearch, lady.

When I watched the "wheatgrass" incident, I could not stop laughing. The Backstreet Boys were so obviously deadpanning, it was hilarious that Trace took it all at face value. They were all practically cracking up behind their sips of tea. I don't know what Trace is playing at, because the way he treated the Backstreet Boys is not how you treat any performer, Trace himself included. The first thing he did, before even trying to meet the demands, was say that there was no way all of this was necessary. For a guy who went out to tell them he was their go-to man for what they needed, he didn't really deliver anything except condescension. If he wasn't just as full of it as the Backstreet Boys seemed to be, then he would've said he'd do his best, but there was a good chance it wasn't possible to pull off, and if that was okay, what can he do to make up for it. I do believe a real diva would throw a fit over Trace's attitude instead of conceding to it. What I find even more ironic is that the minutes Trace "wasted" talking to the band were minutes that he didn't even need to give up, if he'd just agreed to try to meet the demands with no questions asked in the first place. Now he has even less time to get it together because he wasted his time procrastinating. I hope Trace gets his act together for his other tasks, cause I sure didn't see him doing much else besides griping over the Backstreet Boys and chartering two private jets for his country music buddies. Now that's what I call a waste of time. Demands, much?

Posted by: Emily | March 27, 2008 9:08 PM

That dude Trace is trippin just give the boyz what they need! Damn its his job he needs to quit complainin. He was hating on them before he even met them, that says alot right there.

Posted by: Monica | March 27, 2008 11:32 PM

It was so obvious that the BSB were acting! I have followed this band for over 10 years now and know they are always doing charity events and using their fame for good causes. Yes, their requests were demanding but I also think this was scripted and a test for Trace. Trump even said he wanted to see if they could handle the PRESSURE. They didn't have much air time but they were very quiet when they were talking with Trace, and let me tell you, these guys are anything but! But when it was all said and done, they still took the stage EVEN without the wheatgrass. So, apparently, they aren't divas like you all thought. Has-beens? Do you live under a rock?

Posted by: Fallon | March 28, 2008 7:04 AM

Whoever "scripted" the BSB part of "acting" divos made a poor choice. It made the BSB come across as spoiled, uncharitable, and immature young men. It did not make them look positive in the public light. I would hope that if "acting" is the case that they admit it to repair the damage that this show has caused to their reputation. If you are fans maybe you know but to the rest of us it made the BSB look very unfavorable.

Posted by: Momofmany34 | March 28, 2008 8:40 AM

"But when it was all said and done, they still took the stage EVEN without the wheatgrass."

Oh, the horror! I had no idea such inhumane practices still go on in this country! Look, regardless of whether or not they were told to give Trace a hard time, they should have known doing so would only make themselves look like complete tools. They have free will and were already booked as the entertainment, they could have easily said whatever you need, we'll do, whatever you provide for us, it'll be fine, because this is for a great cause. Not to mention they were only there for a couple of hours. Deal with it. I was no Trace Adkins fan prior to this, but I am now. I was no BSB fan before, but now I think they're morons, for behaving that way, and for not knowing better than to behave that way.

Posted by: kdm | March 28, 2008 11:05 AM

BSB is as washed up today as they were when their former manager/creator got arrested.
A bunch of punked out boys trying to make someone else some cash.
Male prostitutes. Plain and simple.

Posted by: CSchultz | March 28, 2008 1:54 PM

I am a producer for the show "The Apprentice" Although I am not allowed to right this using the full name of the group in question; I am allowed to use the initials BSB. As for all the comments of the BSB parts being scripted, that is totally false. Although we do script some scenes in the show, this was not one of them. I hate to tell you BSB fans out there, but they were rude from the time they walked through the door. They knew this was a charity event and they knew who Trace was. They decided on their own to give Trace Adkins (one of the most decent human beings I have ever met) a hard time. The booze was for their road crew, not for the BSB. Mr. Trump was appalled by their behavior and is going through the right connections to have a show produced within the next month of just the BSB footage, of which 98% was not approved by the BSB for airing on the "Celebrity Apprentice". Our lawyers are confident that we will be able to show this in full on a prime time special in April. Sorry BSB fans, when you see this show, unedited, you may no longer be fans of this group.

Thank you for saying what I was thinking. I'm not sure why Trump would have a group of has beens on his show...who do they think they are. Their requests were a disgrace. Didn't anyone tell them this was a charity auction. Trace Adkins disdain for their requests was more than justified.
