Be Specific: Country singer Justin Moore on the perils of pranking Brad Paisley

A Southern rock-inspired country singer in the mode of Jason Aldean, Justin Moore may be the biggest Nashville success story you haven't heard of. He's currently flogging the third hit single from his self-titled summer '09 debut disc, and is about to embark on the latest leg of his seemingly never-ending stint as a tour opener for Brad Paisley. (Moore and Paisley, along with Darius Rucker, play at Jiffy Lube Live on Saturday.) Moore talked to Click Track about his debut -- and about the hazards of releasing a song titled "I Could Kick Your Ass."

Tell me a little bit about how your debut got assembled. I know it was in a very novel way.

I'd been writing in Nashville for about eight years and had a whole lot of songs that I really liked and was considering for the record. I kept going into the label and was like, "This has got to make the record and that's got to make the record." And our label president was like, "Dude, we ain't putting a box set out for your first album." They came to me with this idea of putting two songs up a week on my website and letting fans vote for which songs they liked, and those ended up being what was on the album.

That must have been nerve wracking for you.

I picked a collection of songs that I thought would be fine with me, but there were a couple songs that I thought would be too personal. I was really happy when they chose them.

I understand that there's been some pranking going on during the tour [between Moore and Paisley].

Yeah, when we were out on [the last leg], he got us a few times, actually. I'm kind of worried because in honor of going back out on [Paisley]'s H20 tour, I sent all of my band and crew out onstage in nothing but Speedos and scuba gear and pranked him. And that happened to be, coincidentally, the night he fell onstage and hurt his side. And I got blamed for that, too… It's pretty funny -- it's on YouTube. So I know he's got it in for us when we go back out with him.

When you write a song called "I Could Kick Your Ass," you're pretty much inviting people to take you on. Has that happened yet?

You know, it's funny. Last night-not me, but a guy was trying to come backstage and he got all confrontational…He just sucker-punched my guitar player right in the face, and he's got a big gash under his eye and a black eye right now. That's the first time we've had a major issue. I don't know if he was inspired by the song or not. Hopefully not.
