Mary J. Blige to play Nina Simone; Jazz great Hank Jones dies; Vampire Weekend returns
By Chris Richards
- Sometimes the echo chamber works verrrrrry slowwwwwly: Yesterday, Pitchfork reported that legendary R&B vocalist Mary J. Blige has been cast as legendary jazz vocalist Nina Simone in the forthcoming biopic "Nina." Last week, Variety reported it. But MTV News really had the scoop -- in 2005. Tuns out the film has been in the works for quite some time and will finally begin shooting this September.
- The great jazz pianist Hank Jones died on Sunday at the age of 91. Read his obituary in today's Post.
- Not long after their sold-out show at DAR Constitution Hall, Vampire Weekend has announced a headlining gig at Merriweather Post Pavilion on Sept. 11. They'll have two excellent opening bands in tow: Beach House, (who we profiled in January) and Dum Dum Girls (who we really enjoyed at SXSW). Tickets go on sale on Friday, May 21 at 10 a.m.
