M.I.A. releases new song, remix with Jay-Z; Pavement drummer Gary Young plays a reunion gig; The World Cup kickoff concert was probably really fun
By Ally Schweitzer
- Two songs from M.I.A. are making the rounds: a new track from her forthcoming album "/\/\Y/\" and a remix of the lead single "XXXO" featuring Jay-Z. "Steppin Up"-- about as soothing as a power saw-- premiered yesterday on the BBC. (Though it does not appear on the official album track list.) Between this and the Suicide-sampling "Born Free," Arulpragasam seems to be using her new album as a therapeutic punching bag (and perhaps lending weight Diplo's diss that most of the new album sounds like Skinny Puppy and gives him nightmares). Fortunately for the truffle fry industry, the remix of "XXXO" with Jay-Z puts her safely back in pop territory.
- Matador announced yesterday that original Pavement drummer Gary Young will play one reunion gig with the band in Stockton, CA on June 24th. The label is hyping this one good, so if you're a fan of David Malitzian proportions, buy your ticket NOW! ... ... Why haven't you bought your ticket yet?
- Last night's World Cup kickoff concert in Soweto sounds like it was a lot of fun. Shakira? Amadou & Mariam? Tinariwen? Juanes?! We wish we were there. But reports that Nelson Mandela's great-grandaughter was killed by a drunk driver following the concert are tragic, so everyone please drive safe this weekend.
