Be specific: Chromeo's P-Thugg talks about playing with Daryl Hall, and how he sort of met Prince that one time
By Allison Stewart
In support of their upcoming disc "Business Casual," Montreal-based electro duo Chromeo kick off the American leg of their tour with a Monday night date at the 9:30 Club. Click Track spoke with keyboard/talk box-playing P-Thugg about Daryl Hall, with whom Chromeo shared a much-talked-about Bonnaroo set, and another, less endearing '80s icon.
You sang with Daryl Hall, and I'm sure you're tired of talking about it but I have to ask you about it because it looked like you were having so much fun.
Oh, it was even more fun than it looked. That was really something I will remember all my life. We're there playing [Hall and Oates'] catalog of massive hits. It wasn’t even about our songs to me. It was just being on stage and performing these huge songs: "I Can't Go For That," "Kiss on My List" ... It was incredible, being side by side with these massive hits.
Even as a guilty pleasure, Hall and Oates don’t seem to get any credit.
To me they're not even a guilty pleasure, they're great music for real, you know? Hall and Oates is not guilty! There's nothing guilty about them.
(On being in proximity to the Purple One, after the jump)
Who else from the '80s would you like to meet? I'm guessing Prince.
Prince, yeah. I mean, Prince looks ... we played at the Montreux Jazz Festival a few weeks ago. The lineup was us, Janelle Monae and Jamie Lidell, and Prince didn't come for our show, of course, but he came to watch Janelle Monae from backstage, and I was literally an inch away from him the whole show. I was literally like, rubbing shoulders with him.
I'm not sure he would really click with me. He looked like a bit of an [word we absolutely cannot print]. I don't know if you can print that. Musically he's one of my idols and he's a genius for sure. When you're on that level of experience and greatness, you know, you've gotta have something negative or else you're not balanced. I guess that's his balance.
