Taking sides: Who are the arena rockers of tomorrow?
Today, Arcade Fire is at the top of the charts. Last night, Green Day headlined to scores of fans at Jiffy Lube Live. We sigh. Seems like only yesterday (or yester-decade) that both acts were scrappy little rock bands with stadium-sized dreams.
But who are the arena rockers of tomorrow? Click Track's contributors mulled it over in our weekly Taking sides post. Read our picks after the jump and nominate your own future-arena-rockers in the comments.
Allison Stewart: I could see the Gaslight Anthem getting to the arena someday. I'm not saying I'd wish that for them -- I don't think anybody in their right mind would wish that on anybody -- but they have the goods, for sure. The, uh, anthemic songs, the work ethic, the willingness to steal (in the best possible way) from elders like Springsteen and U2. It's like they're an arena band already, but nobody's noticed yet.
Chris Richards: My pick also hails from the great state of New Jersey and wears its Springsteen influences like a teenager doused in too much cologne on his first date: Titus Andronicus. These days, they're releasing brainy concept albums about the Civil War. In future days, they'll have gotten their high-minded ya-yas out and will be rocking 20,000 faces at once.
David Malitz: I'm going to cheat and recycle something I already wrote by nominating We Were Promised Jetpacks. Everything's there for them: They have a soaring sound, they have a babyfaced lead singer, and they're incredibly young. When I saw them last year, people sang along with every word -- (the ones who didn't were too busy intensely staring at singer Adam Thompson.) My darkhorse pick is Deerhunter, who keep getting more popular even as they continue to make weird, woozy music. Singer Bradford Cox has a bit of cult of personality going and I get faint Smashing Pumpkins-vibe from them. Both of these bands have (or will develop) a sound big enough for arenas, but WWPJ are a bit more likely to get there at this point.
