Aretha Franklin recovering from surgery; Justin Bieber actually surprised by Grammy nods?; 9:30 Club is raffling for charity

- Aretha Franklin underwent surgery on Thursday, calling the procedure "highly successful" in a statement released to the Associated Press. "God is still in control," Franklin said in the statement. "I had superb doctors and nurses whom were blessed by all the prayers of the city and the country." The 68-year-old soul icon did not say, however, what she was being treated for.

- Has the ubiquitous Justin Bieber been taking "how-to-act-surprised" lessons from the also-ubiquitous Taylor Swift? The Biebs says he was "shell-shocked" by his Grammy nominations on Wednesday night.

- Tis the season for do-gooding! Washington's 9:30 Club is hosting its annual holiday raffle to support local charities. Fans can trade a canned good, a new or clean used garment or five dollars at the 9:30 box office for a raffle ticket. Weekly winners will be awarded with a grab bag of music-related goodies and a grand prize winner, selected at the end of the month, will win a pair of tickets to every 9:30 Club show in 2011.

- For those who can't wait for January's Dismemberment Plan reunion shows: Did you know that D-Plan guitarist Jason Caddell's new band Poor But Sexy is playing at the Velvet Lounge tonight? Bonus beats: Plan bassist Eric Axelson will be joining the group on percussion.
