Be specific: Katy Goodman talks Bruise Cruise

By David Malitz

Yesterday I chatted with Katy Goodman for an upcoming Weekend section story (look for it on March 4) about her debut album of enchanting, lovelorn pop recorded under the name La Sera. Goodman also plays bass for Vivian Girls, a trio whose fuzzy, lo-fi rumble has made them indie breakout stars.

This weekend Vivian Girls will play perhaps their most bizarre concert to date as part of the Bruise Cruise Festival. The band will set sail from Miami to the Bahamas and back -- along with the likes of the Black Lips, Surfer Blood, Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall and more -- playing rock-and-roll on the seas. Goodman briefly explained her enthusiasm about the upcoming water-based gig.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I’m so excited. These shows are with all of our good friends, so it's going to be really fun. I like the fact that it’s not a regular, small boat. It’s a gigantic Carnival cruise ship. Most of the people on the ship don’t even know we’re going to be there. We’re just a small portion.

"I’m envisioning some 12-year-old girl, or boy, on this Carnival cruise with their parents just being like, “[Expletive] you, Mom and Dad! I’m gonna go to the lido deck by myself!” And then all of a sudden there’s this punk show going on. I really hope we help get one pre-teen into punk. And their parents will be so bummed that they took their kid on this one Carnival cruise ship that happened to be completely littered with punk kids. I think it’s going to be really hilarious and awesome.

"And apparently they have a full gym with yoga classes and a running track. So I’m going to be taking some yoga classes. I have to buy a bathing suit actually, now that we’re talking about this. Don’t have a bathing suit yet!"
