Internet reacts: Who is Arcade Fire? Why did Esperanza Spalding beat our beloved Bieber?

By David Malitz

arcade fire"Never heard of 'em. They must suck." - The Internet (Kyle Gustafson/FTWP)

You can always count on the Internet to deliver some laughs the day after a big event. After the night of upsets at last night's Grammys, we present you with a pair.

The first comes in the form of Who Is Arcade Fire???, a new Tumblr devoted to the puzzled Twitter reactions of people who were unfamiliar with the Canadian rockers before last night's big win. Among those who don't much care for the latest Album of the Year winners -- Tawny Kitaen and Rosie O'Donnell.

Also funny, but in a more disturbing way, was the vandalism done to Best New Artist winner Esperanza Spalding's Wikipedia page. After she beat out Justin Bieber (among others) some True Beliebers went on the attack and defaced her public bio. One of the since-deleted insults? "JUSTIN BIEBER DESERVED IT GO DIE IN A HOLE. WHO THE HECK ARE YOU ANYWAY?"

Memo to Justin Bieber fans vandalizing Esperanza Spalding's Wikipedia page: Remember what a dick everyone thought Kanye West was for grabbing the mike from Taylor Swift before she could accept her MTV award?

That's you.

Even though they are not from the WP area, the Carolina Chocolate Drops could be considered a local Grammy winner. This is because the old-time string band community is so small that even a North Carolina group lives in our neighborhood. I have jammed with several members of the CCDs at Clifftop (the annual old-time pilgrimage that takes place every August in West Virginia). I just though I would let you know that there are a lot of WP readers who are very proud of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. They are our friends. They are not big-label or Nashville or LA or created or notorious. They are just musically gifted, musically educated (Rhiannon has a degree in opera) people who met at a banjo gathering and started a group. So, their Grammy is a very, very big deal to those of us who play and dance to old-time music!
Cheers!

All the threats were ridiculous and uncalled for. Except for the 14 year old girl who changed Esperanza Spalding's middle name to Quesadilla. That was genius.
