Flyers Fans on Caps Fans
Stepping off the escalator onto the upper concourse before the game, I met Jaclyn and Roger, two of the few here from Philadelphia to root for the Flyers. They'd been to Verizon Center for games before, so I wondered if the fans seemed different during the playoffs.
"Well yeah; it's packed here because of the bandwagoners," Jaclyn said.
"Yeah, the bandwagoners," Roger said.
But it's a playoff game. Of course there would be plenty of Capitals fans, right?
"But the thing I love about Flyers fans is that if you go to a game in Philadelphia, you can go up to anyone and they'll be so knowledgeable about the team and its history," Jaclyn said. "Here, they don't know anything about the Capitals or hockey. They're just here because their team is winning."
I don't know if Jaclyn actually tested any Capitals fans on their hockey knowledge, but she seemed pretty sure.
"I mean, even Donald Brashear said Capitals fans are bandwagoners," she added.
To be fair, he didn't exactly say that.
I caught up with some more understanding (perhaps because their team was ahead) Flyers fans after the second period. CJ Hornberger and David Bowes of Philadelphia have been Flyers fans "since birth," according to Hornberger, and have been season ticket-holders through the good -- and the not so good -- years.
"Philadelphia is a hockey town, though," Hornberger said. "Here [in Washington], it's hasn't been a good place for hockey for a while. It's hard to come to the games when the team's not winning. But we're glad the fans are showing up now."
Really? So they don't mind all that red?
"We're just rooting for the NHL right now," Bowes said. "The league needs all the support it can get. . . It's the only league where the players aren't all making millions and millions of dollars -- except Alex Ovechkin."
"Oh yeah, they got the golden child right there with Ovie," Hornberger said. "That's all you need to put fans in the seats."
