In Case You Missed It...
The Sports Bogger asked, "Is D.C. Now a Hockey Town?"
NTPNate's response and the exchange that follows are just fantastic, and completely worthy of a copy-and-paste:
NTPNate: DC's a winners town, just like always. As long as we have a playoff-caliber hockey team, we'll be a hockey town.
Pfft: Which is exactly why DC fans don't compare to the Flyers' fans. We're there supporting our team rain or shine.
right back at ya: That's exactly why Philly fans are losers.

Dear God, why did I read this??

Well it doesn't help that the Post only gives one guy to cover hockey, as opposed to the writers that are hired to cover football, baseball, and basketball.
Mike Wise's article is indicative of that trend as he regurgitated the Caps' surge since the trade deadline, a good two weeks after it's been focused on every other news outlet. I guess the Post is scrambling to find features on the Caps since they neglected them all season, hence the feature on Sergei Fedorov by Wise the other day.
The old farts need to get off their chairs at the WP and get some hockey features in the paper, as opposed to paying AP for all the hockey bits.
If they can send Dave Sheinin everywhere to cover the O's, they can definitely send someone to cover the games on the road for the Caps next year.
Sheinin lived across the street from me in Baltimore when I was there, and he was gone for long periods of time traveling with the team.

Not sure about all that. If DC were STRICTLY a winner's town, then DC United would be averaging more like 35,000 instead of 21,000.
That local team has more trophies in the last 15 years then all the other local pros combined.

Look, I'm a huge Caps fan, but I don't begrudge the Post for having only one guy covering the Caps. They were terrible for the last 5 years, hockey is tied for #4 in DC with soccer... a full time beat reporter of Tarik's quality - who writes games stories, keeps a blog and does chats - works for me.
What I don't understand are people who complain that the Caps don't get enough coverage and then complain about two well written pieces by Mike Wise. Maybe he should have hopped on the bandwagon back in January, but I don't blame him for not doing it. Those were two really good pieces he wrote, and I expect we will see much more.

If DC were not a Hockey town we would have lost our team in the early 80's just like the other teams that folded. What has kept the Caps going for over the last 25 years since the "Save the Caps" drive has been the "Die Hard" 12,000 Caps fans that come every night regardless of what the teams record is.

Question: Is DC now a good or at least a decent sports town since four of our five pro sports teams made the playoffs in the same year (DC United, Redskins, Wizards and Caps)?
PS: does this blog give extra credit for considering DC United a major professional team? Mike Wise should take note.
