Nobody's Laughing
Okay, so the Baltimore Orioles aren't exactly one half of the next great sports rivalry just yet, but they are above .500 after 40 games. Not too shabby.
O's fans are still in pain.
Post columnist Thomas Boswell raves all about it in his latest column: "Before this season, everybody said the Orioles would be a laughingstock. Now, the joke is on them. It's the Orioles, in a scene out of a slapstick circus, who grin when they win, slap hands and, hats up, act like fools. Very happy fools."
The O's may be happy fools, but their fans are depressed. Or maybe they just know how this story is supposed to end:
shanks1: Enjoy it now because it won't last. Angelos has driven me from being a life-long O's fan. I don't wish them well or ill - I've just become alienated and indifferent.
WrongDog: O's always start strong and then fade as predictably as a sunset.
2greekdc: I'm a diehard O's fan, but just wait another month or two and they wlll be the laughing stocks of MLB, as will the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Let's not forget the 2000 season when the O's lost 34 of their final 38 games or the 2005 when they were in first place on June 15. Were the ending to those seasons abberrations? I think not. Just wait a bit and you will see the true colors of the O's.
CantSeetheHD: "Alienated and indifferent" sums up the way I feel about the team, but it doesn't come close to the venom I feel toward Angelos, and I think many actual O's fans in Baltimore feel similarly. . . And, Boz...I know you all at the Post think you still have some obligation to cover the O's, but this is not the Mets and the Yanks. Nothing makes me want to cancel my subscription (yes, I still get the actual paper) like seeing ANYTHING about the O's, let alone a FEATURE EDITORIAL, on the front page of the Sports section, be it above or below the fold. You guys need to cut that cord, Boz.
See what I mean? Indifference, sad cliches, empty threats. . . What will it take to make O's fans happy again, short of a World Series? (I mean, let's get real here.)

I don't see much point writing about a team owned by a coward who lacks the courage to go on without being subsidized by the Nats. Giving his team coverage rewards bad behavior.

Another example of the Post pushing away O's fans. How quickly you all forget that this was once the proudest franchise in baseball -- with the best winning percentage for 30 years, from the mid-60's to early-90's.
Its a fall from grace, but the Post's turn (particularly the once eloquent Boswell) to me has been the unkindest cut of all. Every time I see dwindling crowds in both Baltimore and D.C. I'm reminded of why the Expos should still be in Montreal.
I'm looking forward to better days, with Ripken as owner and McPhail calling all the shots...a guy can hope.

In spite of Nats fans' whining, the Post has a responsibility to covers the Os. Thirty years of no other MLB team in the area developed many Os fans (in spite of Angelos) in the Washington metro area. There may be as many fans who will cancel their subscriptions if you DON'T cover the Os. As far as the Nats 'subsidizing' the Os, the MASN split was the price for invading territory ceded to the Os long ago. The bottom line is that fans will come in droves to both the Yard and the new Nats' stadium when each team puts a truly competitive product on the field. I think each team is moving in that direction by developing talent in the minor leagues.

For what little it's worth, I still hate it when DC area fans cheer "O" during the Star Spangled Banner. That's a Baltimore tradition that should have no place in our stadiums.

smz42: It isn't a split, Angelo$ owns 90% of the subpar network that Nats games are televised on. Why should the Nats have to pay money to another team in another city. The Yankees, Cubs, Giants and Dodgers don't have to subsidize the lesser teams in their region, why should the Nats? Angelo$ is a coward who is afraid of competition, either in the box office or his division.

the biggest difference between the o's of the previous ten years and now is dave trembley. he has the respect of the players, which perlozzo and mazilli did not. also, the chemistry is better than any team since the '89 team. they may not finish with a winning record, but they will not be a laughingstock. as a life-long o's fan, i love this year's gritty, fun-loving bunch, and i believe the macphail has set the right path.

Hey Lindsay,
Please ignore nasty Dave above. I am an Orioles fan who lives in Baltimore and enjoy reading the Post's
perspectives of the O's. Yes, I have been deeply dissapointed by them but you gotta have hope!

YOU can be proud of this tradition! Its borish, rude and bush league.

I cheer "O" during the anthem at Capitals games because we drive down to DC from Baltimore. We are Caps season ticket holders from Baltimore. so, how about after us Baltimorons yell "O", then the DC/Virginia area Nats fans that are offended by it yell "V". Then everyone will be dumb, confused, and happy.
As for the Orioles, it is actually fun to watch a team that is truly rebuilding for the long term. It gives a fan a chance to feel more of a part of it too. They seem to have good character as well.

Dave,
If O's fans in Baltimore are so happy thne why is the attendance so poor ?? Washington teams have plenty of support - that is why we still have the Redskins. Do I have to remind you of the Baltimore Colts that moved to Indy ???
One more thing -
Lindsay Applebaum is hot.

The O's play better teams than the nats. The O's have Camden Yards. The O's have alot of history both good and bad but i will allways be happy as long as they are in Baltimore.

This might be one of the dumbest posts I've seen in a long time. I think if you ask the majority of Orioles fans, they are happy. They love this team this year. They like the team finally has a direction. Maybe you should stick to writing about Washington teams that no one cares about.
