One More Bowl Game You Won't Be Watching
The NCAA approved Washington as host of the Congressional Bowl yesterday, an honor slightly more prestigious than being chosen as a contestant on Flavor of Love.
The Congressional Bowl, likely between Navy and one lucky ACC team, will be the first college football bowl game to be held in the District.
Readers can't wait, and by can't wait I mean couldn't care less:
kmp1: The Congressional Bowl? What a joke. What student/athlete or alumni is going to be happy coming to DC to play a game on the Winter solstice, five days before Christmas, when it's probably warmer back at their own school. There's far too many college bowl games as it is. There's what, 110 Div 1 football programs around the country? How many bowl games are there now? 30? 35? That's more than half the Div 1 schools qualifying for a bowl game now. But the NCAA would have you believe there's no way they could have a playoff system for football. What a joke.
Readers are so turned off by the idea of another bowl game that they've turned into blubbering messes, spewing out sarcasm and witty puns:
unc1dmo: OHHHH....Please clear my calendar now... NOT !!!!!
bs2004: May it rot with the detritus of The Garden State Bowl, Bluebonnet Bowl, Heritage Bowl, Seattle Bowl, and Freedom Bowl. Put them all in the Toilet Bowl.
unc1dmo: not another "who gives a flying XXXX" meaningless toilet bowl game between 2 Mediocre STIFFS.....
The Toilet Bowl! I see what both you did there. Very good. Spot on.
clandestinetomcat: Is Congress running the NCAA or do all people in power not listen? The People demand NCAA football playoffs, not more bowl games.
Take it to the Hill.

being from Indiana University, I've learned to appreciate any bowl game, no matter how small. I do think there are too many bowl games already, but if they ditched something like the humanitarian bowl (Boise,ID) in favor of this one, I don't think you'd see many complaints. Plus as a former resident of the DC area, I would take any excuse to visit my old hometown.

Worst idea ever! Nobody could possible have stood up in the NCAA meeting and spoken out for this idea. I can't even think of one good reason to do this. The weather? No. The facility? No. Why would Navy ever agree to this? Don't they want to have a chance to go on the road to some place warm or at least just get away? Bowl Game in DC in December!!?? My Best guess is that there will 15,000 people in the stands and that The Beverly Hillbilly reruns will pull a better rating. UNBELIEVABLE!

I wish they'd have a Tidy Bowl, pitting the two worst teams of the year against each other. Winners reap a statue in the shape of a Porcelain God; losers, a bronzed, bristly brush.

Thor, I love the Idea... take the two worst winless teams in the NCAA and have em throw down. Now THAT is something I'd pay money for.
Seriously though, DC is not a college football city. I'm glad we have something now though... even if it's a joke.

I figure it'll be what, maybe 10 years before they run out of teams to play in bowls? Right now, with 119 teams in 1A (I'm not calling it THAT) and 35 or so bowl games that means we need roughly another 25 bowls. Problem is, if DC (and all of its college football glory) is getting a nod they must be running out of places to stage them. I wonder who we beat out? Huntington, WV? Toledo, OH?
I've got it!! They can institute bowls in foreign countries, like the "EuroDisney Bowl" in Paris, and the "Dracula Bowl" in Romania. Surely there are some UConn fans just dying to see the sights in Transylvania.
Just think of the boon to the participatory ribbon & medal industry!

What a bunch of losers. With Navy in this game each year they win enough games to qualify, the game will not only be fun to watch but will sell well in this area.

As much as I want to jump up and down about the fact that I'll be able to attend a bowl game without getting on a plane, does the Congressional Bowl really mean anything? Will a match-up of Navy and some lowly ACC team really change the college landscape? I don't think so.
Why don't they just institute a playoff and put us all out of our misery.
