Major League Greed

Fantasy sports nerds, rejoice!

The Supreme Court rejected a request yesterday to settle a dispute between Major League Baseball and the fantasy sports industry. MLB wants fantasy baseball sites to pay up for using players' names and statistics.

According to the story, "lower courts said the Web sites had a free-speech right to publish information about the players' performances on the field, just as the media do."

The Supreme Court agreed with the previous ruling, probably because the justices didn't want to have to disband their league. You know how Ruth Bader Ginsburg loves her fantasy baseball.

We're safe for now thanks to free speech and such, but readers are nevertheless miffed at MLB for threatening the right to geek out, fantasy sports style.

JQsunset: Well, at least the Supremes got this one right. Lord knows what they're smoking over at the MLB offices to believe that suits like this are a good idea.

mjarvis: That's a great idea...suing your biggest fans.

Right up there with suing your friendly neighborhood dry cleaners for $54 million for a pair of lost pants.

askgees: Only these scumbags would fight to hurt their fans. Not one other major sport has filed suit. Baseball is a joke.

They may not have filed, askgees, but they sure aren't on your side: "Baseball's petition had been supported by the NFL, the NBA and the NHL." What a bunch of lemmings.

justjunkemail: Major League Baseball is no longer an American past time. It's all about money, money, money and that is exactly why I don't attend or support professional sports.

oneman: This type of suit is typical of corporate greed that we face in America today, they think every last dime must be squeezed, controlled and owned by someone, nothing belongs to the people anymore, back off MLB! Remember who still pays the bills around here.

HillRat: Ha ha ha! Greedy, money grubbing professional sports got dealt the back hand of reality today.

Let's celebrate, shall we? Fantasy baseball free-for-all, starting now! (MLB, you can just put it on my tab.)
