Arenas Thinks, We Wait
My apologies for not posting since Friday. I was in Atlantic City, and they do not condone blogging from the casinos. Some advice: don't put it all on red. . .or black. Put half on each color every time. It's a futile activity, but you'll never lose.
Someone who doesn't have to worry much about money is Antawn Jamison, who just re-signed with the Wizards for a four-year, $50 million extension (how's that for a segue?).
With Jamison locked up, the Wizards have turned their focus to Gilbert Arenas, who is en route to China for some promotional business (probably drawing more inspirational stick figures).
The Golden State Warriors are offering Arenas a five-year deal worth just over $100, and the Wizards have countered with maximum-level contract -- a six-year, $124-ish million offer.
However, Washington will ask Arenas to take less than the max in order to help the team remain under the luxury tax threshold, according to the Post's Ivan Carter.
When he lands in China, Arenas is set to have a phone chat with Wizards Owner Abe Pollin. It's a long flight -- plenty of time to think.
In the meantime, let's check out what readers are saying:
DC Man88: please withdraw the Gilby offer and make room for Lebron in 2010.
Monte: ^ahahahahahahaha
I feel you, Monte.
Prison Balls: Bye Bye Gil...he's going back to the Warriors...
Wizzy: Lets see if Gilbert is a man of his word, he said he would re-up if Antawn did and he has. DAMN the Warriors for driving up the price, now (if accepted), we will have to waaay overpay someone of questionable health.
Anonymous: If Arenas signs a max deal with us it will end with both EG and EJ getting fired within the next season or 2. What a huge mistake Ernie is ruining the team for years to come.
KeepArenasInDC08: Why is Ernie so bad? Is it the fact that the Wizards have gone to the playoffs four years in a row after a decade long absence. Or is it the fact that his three biggest deals have netted 7 all-star appearances and some respect in this league.
Bart: I think it's worthwhile to ask him to take less. We've offered the max. If he takes less, we get to sign more players and he gets tremendous amount of goodwill from the DC fans. Win win for everybody.
psps23: Arenas isn't going anywhere. The Wiz have already committed to giving Arenas the contract he wants. The only variable is whether Arenas wants the max from the Wiz or if he's going to take a slight pay-cut for the betterment of the team. Better accept to accept it now Gil haters, he isn't going anywhere (unless a big-time sign and trade happens, which seems highly unlikely to me).
I've got to agree with psps here. Whether Arenas takes less than the maximum or not, we'll probably see him in this town for years to come. Here's the question, though: Is he worth the money? You decide.

Don't take what you can't afford to lose.

You lose if it lands on green, which is why it's profitable for the casinos.

Playing not to lose is lame. There's only one way to live life. Balls out, full speed ahead, and with lots of tequila.
