Featured Commenter: Nate in the PDX

Meet Redskins Insider celebrity Nate in the PDX:

Real name (optional): naaah... just Nate.

"Keeping with the hat theme, and throwing in a jersey for good measure. Yes, that's RI on the laptop in the background. A shamelessly staged photo, shot by my darling wife, 'Mrs. Nate.'"

Location: Portland, OR.

Occupation: I work on the internet.

If you had to always use your real name, would you still comment?

Probably, but with nowhere near the frequency or inanity of the comments I have posted.

How long have you been coming to Redskins Insider and how often do you read it/comment?

Reader since La Canfora's first post (August 1, 2006), commenter since November '06, beloved/loathed "regular" since some time thereafter. I check the blog all the time, for new threads and to catch up on the conversation in the comments. I take the blog and the conversation in the comments waaaaaaay too seriously.

How do we know if it's Nate in the PDX or an imposter?

I dunno, I tend to go on at length without actually saying anything, and my copious commenting on what's ostensibly a football blog belies a profound ignorance of football. And I like to use unnecessarily big words. And I tend to free-associate and wander off topic, given a very short attention span.

Have you met anyone through the blog in person?

Oh, have I. Portland guys: Redskin Willie, Stumped, Stumptown Chris, Chia Pet, dchandlr; P Diddy up in Seattle; NY area guys: chRIs LaRRy, jm220, ArtMonkToTheSticks, connskins, Bucktown Skins Fan; Jasons La Canfora and Reid; and all the people who came out to our big DC "shabingus" meet-up... yes, I'm going to try and list them all off the top of my head: Cindy Boren, dcsween, MV Dame, 4-12, Dorf, Alex35332, Lisa, Learned Hand, Mark from 21132, Redcoat, SMACK, Eagles Fan Adam, Redskirt, talent evaluator, and Shock (sorry if I missed anyone).

What other blogs (on washingtonpost.com or elsewhere) do you read?

On WashPo, this one and Steinbog and Caps Insider; UniWatch; The Onion AV Club (not strictly speaking a blog, but an incredibly smart and funny commenting community); and the forum on frankblack.net.

Do you have your own blog?

Nope.

Have you ever fought in any epic comment battles?

Hmm... For a while I was being really unfriendly to newcomers who I felt were maliciously disrupting the conversation on RI, and I made a lot of people feel unwelcome on the blog, and rightly earned the nickname "Barney Fife." And as mentioned above, I am a little overzealous about the blog itself and its commenting community. So I've pissed off some people, as evinced by the regular stream of comments which malign me in various ways, but none of the perpetrators has ever engaged me in real dialog, on or off the blog, so nothing you could characterize as epic.

How long have you been a fan of the Redskins?

Thanks to my big brother, I've been a fan since I was a wee lad. Happily, right when I was old enough to start paying attention and really getting into it, Joe Gibbs was hired and, you know, good things happened.

How do you think the team will do this year?

Oof. New, first-time head coach + new offense, unproven QB, tough division, blah blah blah... I believe in Jason Campbell, and I like Zorn, and I think they'll lead us to 8-8 or maybe a little better. Regardless of the record, it will be a MUCH more fun team to watch with Zorn at the helm. I hope.

What other teams do you root for?

The Nats, the Caps, the Wiz, the United, UVa, Portland Beavers, Portsmouth FC, and underdogs in general.

Chris Larry's question: What would be your fantasy job related to the Skins?

Middle linebacker.

Sombrero Guy's question: Who is your favorite (former) [Redskin] of all time?

John Riggins.

NatsNut's question: How did you come up with your moniker?

An incredible lack of creativity (my first name) plus a lame joke on the pop culture phenomenon of referring to your town by its airport code ("the PDX")

O's Exec's question: What's more painful to watch, a Nats game or "Jon and Kate Plus 8?"

This is why I'm glad I don't have a TV in my house: I don't have to make lesser-of-two-evils choices like this one.

Ask and answer another question to add to this interview.

What will be the dominant theme of the [Redskins]' next season? Jason Campbell's "make-or-break-year" becomes his breakthrough season

Anita's still fine.

Nate, you really don't have a TV? Congrats, you're the only one in the entire world!

Sorry guy it's just United, not the United.

Posted by: Editor | July 30, 2008 12:43 PM

sorry, Editor, that was a little too inside-y, I guess... there's a running "the United" joke over on the Sports Bog that I was referencing.

Me gusta Nate, but no TV....wow...just wow....

My question for Nate: You are on a 10 car ride ... only one 8-track tape can be played and one of them must be played. Do you choose Steely Dan or the Dallas Cowboys fight song, with interviews?

Posted by: dcsween | July 30, 2008 1:07 PM

Lindsay is looking good

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

In your moms world it's "Me love you long time."

Posted by: Anonymous | July 30, 2008 1:16 PM

I think that's a trick question, sween. The Cowboys don't have a fight song, do they?

Besides, there's already a tape stuck in the deck, and it's "Sympathy for the Devil," over and over.

Sad to day the cowboys do have a fight song, but being that it was written in the 60's or 50's by people who were not at all hip or cool you can immagen its not a great song. The Eagles have a better song.

Yay Nate! Every big sis wants to see her baby brothers name in print and you are a master commentator so it's fitting that you were chosen for this honor! We're so proud!! Gray said 'yiphoo' (her weird mix between yippee and yahoo) and was so excited to see your pic! Love you!

Posted by: 6 pack Ab | July 30, 2008 3:38 PM

How do we know this is the real Nate and not fake Nate?

Posted by: Q-Tip | July 30, 2008 3:39 PM

I would love to see a bio of The Truth.

Any chance of that, Bonita?

Posted by: Q-Tip | July 30, 2008 3:45 PM

Nate has his sister commenting on his blog commenter profile. Wow. That's embarrassing. Not to diss the whole idea of the blog commenter profile, but this is funny.

Posted by: JDP | July 30, 2008 4:04 PM

The United are no joke.

Ben Olsen

Posted by: JDP | July 30, 2008 7:54 PM

What the hell, this isn't letting me post about Durant Brooks. The blog comments are censored!

Ben Olsen is a lesser human being to Durant Brooks.

Nate,

Papa John's or POPPPPPEYYYYYEEEESSSS????

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | July 30, 2008 8:32 PM

Can't believe nobody asked Nate a beer question!

Posted by: kost52 | July 30, 2008 9:22 PM

OK.

Nate, do you want a beer?

Posted by: charlie | July 30, 2008 9:25 PM

THe big problem with that question is that it might make Nate feel limited to "a" beer. That's not how he rolls.

Posted by: cload & daggar | July 30, 2008 10:16 PM

Coupla things on beer:

Yes.

And tomorrow night, I hope to be putting back a few with our man Dorf, who's on a northwest trip and rolling through Portland. We're going to a Beavers game to enjoy their "Thirsty Thursday" promotion. And I hope we can send Dorf back east with a serious case of Beaver Fever.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | July 30, 2008 11:19 PM

Dorf is rolling through the Northwest? Awesome.

Posted by: P Diddy | July 31, 2008 12:15 AM

Follow up question. How did you become a Pompey fan?

Posted by: Skinz | July 31, 2008 10:41 AM

I *heart* Nate in the PDX

Posted by: Chia Pet | July 31, 2008 11:32 AM

Congratulations on your continuing fame Nate, more power to your (drinking) elbow.

I think the Pompey link is because Nate originally hails from the Portsmouth, VA area Skinz.

Posted by: Redcoat | July 31, 2008 12:57 PM

Nate to cameraperson, "Make sure you get my good side".

Posted by: SMACK | July 31, 2008 3:05 PM

I have had a case of beaver feaver since I was 11. But it was probably someting different.
