Re-Evaluating Tennis, If We Must
You know it's a slow news day when commenters feel the need duke it out over whether tennis or NASCAR is more of a "sport." I should save everyone the trouble of debating and say right now that it's tennis, by a mile (go ahead and challenge me, if you must). Nevertheless, here's how it all went down.
Michael Wilbon says tennis is on the up-and-up since its demotion to "niche sport" in recent years, thanks to Rafael Nadal's stunning Wimbledon victory.
(Though if you asked me, which you didn't, it wasn't such a stunner at all. We knew it would come down to Roger "Giggles" Federer and Nadal, and Federer had to lose sometime. But I digress. . .)
Wilbon's welcoming of tennis back to mainstream sports is laughable to reader bal503, who kicks off the insult fest with this little remark:
bal503: NASCAR gets better ratings on a bad day.
Oh, no he didn't.
sajboy: To actually mention NASCAR to any sport is a joke. NASCAR is not a sport. People who think NASCAR is a sport are the same who think WWF is "real" wrestling. Please bal503, take some laps around your neighborhood to clear your head.
docvader76: NASCAR gets better ratings because the number of white trash hicks who watch it far outnumber the fans who watch tennis. It doesn't take much brainpower to watch 4 hours of left turns. And that's why they watch it :)
Oh, yes he did. Git 'er done, bal503.
bal503: docvader76- It doesn't take much brain power to watch two people hit a ball back and forth until one misses either. It's not C-Span. sajboy- I was simply mentioning that the pooularity of tennis (on TV) has declined to the point that NASCAR gets better ratings. It's not because the people don't like tennis, they just don't tennis players. After reading your comments, I now see why.
What do you think? Will the popular kids invite tennis to eat lunch with them anytime soon?
I think I'm done with this and ready to find out how much cheddar Cynthia Rodriguez will be getting from A-Rod. Now that will be what I call a stunner.
