The Pace Setter

A Monday morning feature in which D.C. Wire charts Mayor Adrian M. Fenty's quest for athletic glory.

The 37-year-old mayor is well known for his love of running and triathloning. And all that training--and Vitamin Water--is paying off. Fenty (D) participated in the 2008 National Marathon on Saturday and, despite aides telling us he had been a bit under the weather last week, finished strong in 3 hours, 40 minutes, 5 seconds. We believe that's a personal record for the mayor. His pace was 8:24 per mile, good for 398th among the race's 1,387 competitors.

How does that compare to his finish in the 2007 National Marathon? Blows it away. Fenty ran 4:08:03, a 9:28 per mile pace, good for 503rd place a year ago.

Remember, Fenty often says marathoning is not his strong suit. He's more of a 10-mile guy. Here is some video of Fenty over the weekend courtesy of WRC-TV Ch. 4.

Pace Setter bonus item: Council member Kwame R. Brown (D-At Large) ran the half-marathon Saturday and finished in 2:24:04, an 11-minute mile pace.
