No Self-Oppression on D.C Voting Rights; That's Congress' Job

The D.C. Council has whittled away and added to Mayor Adrian M. Fenty's $5.7 billion spending plan. Many of the changes are about dollars and cents, but the council has also found something that just makes sense, according to Chairman Vincent C.Gray (D).

There's no money involved. Yet.

The council plans to strike a section that bans the city from using federal funds to pay the salaries of employees whose job duties would include gaining voting representation in Congress.

The provision has been carried over from budget to budget every year, Gray said.

"It's been left there under the assumption that Congress was going to do it" anyway, meaning ban the use of federal funds to win voting rights, Gray said. No secret that Congress has historically been resistant to District voting rights.

Congress indeed may impose a ban, Gray continued, "But let them do it."
