Schwartz Officially In

Council member Carol Schwartz (R-At Large), who has been the sole representative of the GOP on the council since 2004, announced her re-election bid today.
Backed by the local Republican Committee, Schwartz will seek a fifth term as a council member.
"Councilmember Schwartz has a strong record and long history advocating the interests of all DC residents and her announcement is great news for Republicans, Democrats and all DC voters alike," DC Republican Committee Chair Robert J. Kabel said in a statement.
In her statement announcing her decision to run for re-election, Schwartz said: "A lot of people have told me, 'Carol, you don't need this job. Why do you want to continue to work this hard?' And the best answer I can give them is that I am very protective of and, in fact, passionate about this city. I often say that I have gotten over every love affair I've ever had except for the one I've had with DC for nearly 43 years. I wake up in the morning, usually in the early morning, thinking, 'Which problem, which issue, can I tackle today?' If there is such a thing as a calling, this is mine."
Republican Patrick Mara, a D.C. alternate delegate to John McCain at the Republican National Convention, is hoping to unseat the longtime incumbent. He is a manager of government relations at ML Strategies

Actually, she voted for the $611 million before she voted against it....or against it before she was for it. Who can keep track?

"who has been the sole representative of the GOP on the council since 2004" ??????
She was first elected to the council as a Republican in 1984 and has served continuously since 1996 so why is she only credited by the Post for her service since 2004?

She has been "the sole representative of the GOP on the countil since 2004" because David Catania was also a representative of the GOP until he switched his affiliation to "independent" in 2004. Not some grand conspiracy by the Post here, Dan, they're reporting a basic fact.

Maybe the crack reporters at DC Wire can ask to see Schwartz's luxurious private bathroom. Funny how the "woman of the people" can't be bothered with having to use a bathroom with the common folk.

Good luck to Patrick Mara. The time has come for Carol Schwartz to pack up her bags and move out of the public arena. She has been around for 34 years and its time to give others a chance.
Schwartz opposed Mayor Fenty's school restructuring plan and forgot that much of the problems began when she was on the school board and didn't do any planning for the future.
Schwartz opposed the smoking ban which she held hostage in her committee until the Council got fed up and moved it to the health committee.
Schwartz claims to be for Gay rights and DC voting rights but gave donations to elect George Bush who opposes both.
Schwartz is like so many other politicians whose ego is so big they just can't imagine being out of office. Well I think that most residents of the District will not really miss her and she is rich enough to find something else to do with her time.
Maybe Patrick Mara can unseat her and if not, we will have to wait for one of the other Independent candidates running for her seat to do so.
We will vote for Barack Obama who represents change. It is time to "change" the City Council as well. Time to elect someone with new ideas and a passion for the people rather than just a passion to be heard and seen.

Please Big Business and people who live in the Suburbs and rape the good folk of this city. Throw stones hide your hands, true Republicans are smarter than that!!!

Let me get this straight: The Councilmember who authored the extremely liberal "Sick and Safe Day" legislation, who voted against the baseball stadium, who sides with organized labor at every chance, who led the opposition to Fenty's school takeover, who actively opposes school choice for DC students, ...yeah, so SHE'S supported by the DC Republican party? You've got to be kidding me.
