Ward 2 Democrats Endorse Evans, Brown
Longtime Council member Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) won the endorsement of the Ward 2 Democrats last night in his re-election bid.
In a media release, Evans's campaign touted the support he has already received from Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) and the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club. "These endorsements prove that there is a profound movement of support for Jack Evans to fix our schools, make our neighborhoods safer and improve the delivery of city services," the release reads.
In the Sept. 9 Democratic primary, Evans, a 17-year incumbent, is facing a challenge from lawyer Cary Silverman, president of the Mount Vernon Square Neighborhood Association.
Council member Kwame Brown (D-At Large), who is seeking a second term, also received a nod from the Ward 2 Democrats. "We're running a grassroots campaign and voters from across Ward 2 including Shaw, Logan Circle, Georgetown, and Dupont Circle want to be a part of improving the District," he said in a press release.
Two potential opponents have lined up to run against Brown in the primary. Activist parent Clarence Cherry and George "The Underdog" Jackson, which is how he is listed by the Board of Elections and Ethics.
Nominating petitions to become an official candidate are due next week.

I went to the event last night, here's the impression I got:
The incumbent polluted the sidewalk with an abundance of staff, making the walkway hardly moveable. He even provided paid-for transportation to the older voters with KFC dinners awaiting their arrival. Seems a little chicken to me.
As Evans and 3 colleagues lingered outside the event after they had won; one of the colleagues had the audacity to made erroneous and chastising remarks regarding Silverman's lawn signs. He was told by the other colleagues to "be nice" as he snarled at a couple of Silverman's staff as they walked by. Sore Winners?

There was definitely a lot of fried chicken, thats for sure.
I believe the vote tally was 105 Evans - 67 Silverman which is a 61%-39% breakdown. Indeed I'd say an excellent showing for the underdog who had no chicken.

I was at the Ward 2 Democratic Endorsement Meeting and I was flabbergasted by the lack of structure that DC shows for its voting constituency. First, you do not have to show ID to get a ballot? Really? Aren't you just inviting voter fraud with such a lax system?
I also noticed a disproportionate amount of chicken being distributed, but not to ALL of his voters. It was odd, that only some people (typically the bussed in workers/and voters) were privy to those lovely chicken dinners. I believe in incentives to get voters to the polls (rides and such), but baiting voters with free dinners is a bit tacky. I feel bad that an incumbent would have to stoop to such tricks to get people to come out and support him. If he is paying these people with chicken now to come out and vote... what will he give them to come out and vote next time. What promises has he made? This time its chicken... I wonder what he will give away next time to get people to support him.
The other "great" thing I saw at the Endorsement meeting was individuals filling out ballots for others. I don't know if they forgot their glasses and couldn't read it, but something is off when other "paid" voters are filling out ballots for their friends.
It was almost a mockery of the voting system here in DC.
I think as "one of the greatest cities in the world" (to quote our great Mayor) I think we can do better.

Come on DC Conservatives. Take a few years out from making your millions and devote it to DC. We need to rid ourselves of these knuckleheads! I saw some guy named Smallberries posting here. Is he for real?

I'd heard of the tradition of paying for votes with food before, but this was the first time I'd seen it in my own neighborhood.
The room was full of union people, who were there because - in part - Evans supported them in their opposition to the anti-noise bill. Their red t-shirts were huddled in the right side of the hall.
And there were the KF-Seniors, bused in for their meal of KFC.
Some things are sold for 30 pieces of silver or a mess of pottage. But people in this city - who constantly carp about our lack of voting representation in Congress -are willing to sell their vote for a wing, a thigh, and a breast.
And Jack's campaign warchest can buy plenty of dinner specials, complete with mashed potatoes and slaw. Hooray for democracy!

You might have mentioned that our 17 year Councilmember barely got the Ward II Dimocratic endorsement last evening, even though he had a paid army of workers and out spent Cary Silvermen at least 100 - 1.
