Down Goes George, Down Goes George
Just when it seemed like all was right for George Washington (see below) comes today's Giant President Head race. (Btw, how much do I have to write about George Washington before I get a link on gwhoops.com? Anyone? Anyone? Do you need weekly SirValiant Brown updates? Where-are-they-now sessions with Nimbo Hammons and Eric Withers? A Glen Sitney retrospective? Here's more on Mike O'Connor 5 innings, 3 hits, 0 runs, taken out for a pinch hitter with a 1-0 lead. His replacement was newcomer Chris Booker, whose forkball, as Boz says, "isn't forking." And now he's gone.)
So the Giant President Head race: Touchdown Teddy is quickly eliminated by running in the wrong direction, Abe bolts out ahead of the pack, and in the jostling somehow George goes down. Hard. "I think George hurt himself," Nats beat writer Barry Svrluga says. George gets back up and pulls it together, but obviously something is wrong. He keeps grabbing at one of his legs. It's almost like a Barbaro situation. If there had been a jockey, George would have been pulled up and taken behind a tent. You wanted to look away, just in case. "George really hurt himself," Barry says. "This is the first real injury." The replay flashes on the non-jumbo-tron. "Oh yeah, he ran into Tom's head," Barry says.
"One of the best gimmicks in sports," Boz says.
(Major Wingate is gone from Tennessee. "I've had it with these [bleepity-bleep] snakes on this [bleepity-bleep] basketball player!" an e-mailer notes. If he stole that line from any bloggers, I apologize.)
