Dead Animals and Caps Fans

The great thing about doing a sports blog is you go where the stories are, without any preconceived assignments, and thus you can quickly change directions when events warrant. Which is why I just spent way too much time this morning staring at RoadkillRampage, a site which warns viewers away from its violent content and openly admits that it's "a waste of time, useless and had no redeeming value what so ever." If you have any sense at all, you won't follow this link. And thank goodness I don't eat breakfast. Blech.

Naturally, I stumbled upon bloody, leaking animal carcasses because I attended the Caps game last night. And while talking to some random fans, I ended up meeting the site's creator, diehard Caps supporter Andrew Mickert, who at some point told me that he "takes pictures of dead animals on the side of the road."

"Why?" I asked.

"No one else does it," he said, which I guess says pretty much everything you need to know about the Internet.

(Before you attempt to hurt Andrew, bear in mind that he never harms any animals; he merely visually chronicles their automobile-related demise and dismemberment and repeated smashing. Also, that his explanation for his hobby--"it started as an accident"--would be an excellent slogan for his site.)

"I just drive around looking for dead animals; I'll drive around with my nephew for five or six hours looking for roadkill," he said. "It's getting to be that season."

I always think of mid-October as the season for baseball playoffs, and the start of basketball, and raking leaves, and Halloween candy. Now, I will also think of it as showtime for visual roadkill bloggers.

(Also, I'm not trying to suggest that this speaks to any greater truth about hockey fans, although you should feel free to come to that conclusion yourself.)

I read this with gape-jawed wonder, mostly hoping that it wouldn't be a direct reference to us Caps fans ourselves. Besides, I think last night was more of a "tumbleweed" night than an "animal carcass" night.

But that's just me.

OK, so now how are you going to smoothly segue to your Thursday cheese post?
