Verizon Center Security Guards Vote: No More DCU Coverage
I'm encouraging reader feedback about which teams I should be spending my time with. More Caps? More Wizards? More Hoyas? Less United? Tell me.
Like yesterday, at the phone booth, a security guard stopped me, and told me how much he liked my blog, except for one thing: too much soccer coverage.
"Stick to the other stuff, man," he said. "The other stuff's funny. Nobody gives a [bleep] about soccer. You start talking about Ezekey and all that [bleep], and nobody gives a [bleep]."
By "Ezekey," I assume he meant Bog Hero Esky, who is developing a cult following. I told him this the other day.
"I consider myself a cult leader," Esky said, while nodding, knowingly.
And as long as this is turning into a DCU item, Troy Perkins was just named the MLS goalkeeper of the year. Not bad for a mortgage banker. And this Q&A claims that Troy's salary (about $29k) is the most talked about in professional sports, after A-Rod's.

More Caps! There are plenty of other people covering every aspect of the Redskins. We really don't need any more info on them.
Posted by: DC Domer | October 19, 2006 03:50 PM
More caps.
Posted by: Dan | October 19, 2006 03:53 PM
Definitely more 'Skins--there's only three articles in today's WaPo!
What about local amateur sports? Kickball, rugby, frisbee...I guarantee a blog about the Adams Morgan Beirut League would write itself.
Posted by: DD | October 19, 2006 03:55 PM
I like the mix of Caps and United.
Don't pay attention to Phone Booth staff, especially the second string that gets Caps events.
Posted by: Kim | October 19, 2006 03:57 PM
Disagree w/ the security guards, keep up the DCU coverage.
Posted by: PV | October 19, 2006 03:58 PM
What the crap does an low-paid BAMA like a Verizon security guard know?
MORE UNITED.
LESS of the Chesapeake Watershed Region Indigenous Persons.
Posted by: Section 103 | October 19, 2006 04:00 PM
You're one of the only people that actually gives DCU it's due. You should keep it up. How many other teams around here actually win championships?
The paper has tons of Skin's coverage already. Caps and DCU are the areas that don't get the respect they deserve.
Posted by: niv | October 19, 2006 04:00 PM
Whatever strikes your fancy (as long as it's interesting!) If DCU rocks your boat, go for it. And coverage of Zero Hero is always appreciated.
Posted by: TG | October 19, 2006 04:00 PM
I'm a Caps fan first, but I like that you cover a little of everything. You don't get that everywhere.
Posted by: false_cause | October 19, 2006 04:01 PM
Screw the Caps (ok i just made myself laugh accidentaly).
Agent Zero needs you and the wizznutzz now more than ever!
Posted by: Unsilent Majority | October 19, 2006 04:04 PM
More Caps AND DCU. I read for those reasons. I can read about basketball or football anywhere. No one else is talking about DCU (or hockey).
Posted by: darth_kittius | October 19, 2006 04:04 PM
Props to Section 103 for the TMQ reference!
Posted by: Kim | October 19, 2006 04:06 PM
More cheese!!! And whatever you do, just keep up the great work! And tell us what you put in your coffee, cause it makes you about the most productive person I know (at least compared to the other WashPo sports slackers).
Oh, and maybe some Hens coverage. We don't burn couches, we just win championships (ok, so I'm still living in '03).
Posted by: jhorstma | October 19, 2006 04:07 PM
Keep it as is...I just discovered your blog and I hate it when I discover something, like it, but then all these changes start and it is never as good as it was when I started.
Posted by: Scott | October 19, 2006 04:08 PM
i agree caps and united should be number one, you just dont get it anywhere else!
Posted by: keith | October 19, 2006 04:08 PM
What this blog needs is a surly hottie update.
Posted by: Torino | October 19, 2006 04:09 PM
I love your United stuff! This is one of the best blogs on the site. Not that it's difficult to out-blog Marc Fisher's complaints about squirrels, but still!
Posted by: Emily | October 19, 2006 04:10 PM
Judging by the Caps attendence last night I think the security guard was just worried about his job security. Keep up the great coverage of DC United.
Posted by: Jay | October 19, 2006 04:17 PM
Caps and United. The football and basketball get everything but massages 'with release' in theis paper.
Posted by: will | October 19, 2006 04:17 PM
I wouldn't rely on security guards sense of humor, they're not exactly a reliable benchmark. Also god hates them.
More DCU! :D
Posted by: La Barra | October 19, 2006 04:19 PM
I think a healthy dose of Caps and United coverage, along with a sprinkling of Agent Zero is just what the doctor ordered.
Posted by: John | October 19, 2006 04:21 PM
More DC United...and some Caps. Skins get all the coverage in the Post and don't deserve it. They suck!
Posted by: TeeFree | October 19, 2006 04:24 PM
I need more United! It's like a fever! I gotta have more United! Gotta have more!!! More United!
Posted by: DCsundevil | October 19, 2006 04:25 PM
Ignore football and basketball (NBA & college) since this town is oversaturated with that kind of coverage already. As a die-hard hockey fan I vote MORE CAPS, though including some United ramblings makes for a nice balance.
Posted by: OrderedChaos | October 19, 2006 04:29 PM
Way to take charge of the BOG-Bogger-ha!
Keep up the good stuff man!
Thanx...
P.S.-Wizzzamagizzzkidzzz more, but of course!!!
Posted by: Wise Girls DC- | October 19, 2006 04:30 PM
Definitely keep up the level of United coverage. It's refreshing to read stories of athletes who don't have overinflated egos to match overinflated salaries.
Posted by: Rob | October 19, 2006 04:32 PM
Keep up the great United Coverage.
Posted by: john | October 19, 2006 04:32 PM
More Rugby please! We're two weeks into the PRU's Third Division playoffs and nary a word from the Sports Bog. Also USA Rugby qualified for the World Cup in '07 and the silence on that topic from the Bog was deafening, especially when you consider that Washington RFC is represented on the Eagles.
Posted by: KJ | October 19, 2006 04:33 PM
More props to Section 103, I believe that's the first time I've seen someone called a BAMA in the DC Blogosphere.
Posted by: KJ | October 19, 2006 04:34 PM
I vote for more Wizards.
I think the security guard is very wrong about DC United coverage - I'm not even really a fan myself, but Esky and the rest are, seriously, blog GOLD.
Posted by: Josh | October 19, 2006 04:34 PM
DC United and Caps
More Ezeky! You can't have too much coverage of a cult leader. It's the sordid kind of angle upon which you could base a career.
Posted by: MattMathai | October 19, 2006 04:35 PM
What the hell does a CSC goon know? Keep up the United coverage. You're still making the road trip to the Swamp this Saturday, right?
Posted by: DB | October 19, 2006 04:36 PM
Rob, I'd bet a hefty chunk of my own salary that the two are related.
Posted by: Emily | October 19, 2006 04:38 PM
There's a soccer team in town?
Seriously, having stuck your toe on the sheet of ice, there's no heading back for the warming room now. Or else . . . Onfrozenblog will call you out for it!
Posted by: pucksandbooks | October 19, 2006 04:47 PM
hee hee, way to stick it to the yellow team Bogman!
See you Sat (and let me know what kind of beer goes with the cheese you're bringing on the bus!)

Those soccer players sound a hell of lot more interesting than the local NFL & NBA representatives. More United & Caps please.
Posted by: Mr. Smith | October 19, 2006 05:04 PM
More field hockey!
(well, in general, can we bump up the high-school sports please? It has fallen to New York Times-level of insignificance)
Posted by: El Norte | October 19, 2006 05:12 PM
More Hoyas.
Posted by: KC | October 19, 2006 05:34 PM
More United, more United, more United. Esky cracks me up, Boswell is hilarious, as is Ben Olsen.. I like a litlte bit of Caps, but the Redskins and Wizards coverage is overwhelming.. I like a little of your different perspective, but would prefer to see you focus on the less-covered United (and Caps.. a little.. but, not a lot.. a little).
Keep up the good work.
Posted by: Michael N. | October 19, 2006 05:39 PM
Fear the Headgear...keep the United coverage...and Caps stuff, why not...it's not hurting anyone.

Do NOT cut back on the coverage of DC United. Do not listen to the neanderthal ranting of the Verizon Center security guards. He acts like because of United all the other teams in town don't get enough coverage. God forbid your writing about United prevents some pertinent information about the Deadskins or CFKA Bullets from being reported.

Dear. Mr. Steinberg,
Please do not write any more items about the name Ezekey.
My full name is Sherman Ezekey and as a result of this page, I have gotten several unsolicited prank calls from (I assume) your readers. Granted 2 out of the 3 were annyoing yet good natured inquiries about the authenticity of my name, but the other call was laced with profanities and made me quite uncomfortable. Were my two grade school aged children home when I played my home's voicemail they surely would have heard the tirade.
Again, I realize that you were merely passing along a funny anecdote that seemed blog-worthy, but I must ask you to leave the name "Ezekey" off of the Washington Post's website in the future.
Thank you,
Sherman

More United, MLS & Caps!
Posted by: m | October 19, 2006 07:04 PM
Hey Sherman:
Get off your high horse. You probably don't exist except in the office of Dan Snyder and sees Dan Steinberg as somewhat of a threat to the Redskins' media penetration.
Well, what are $75 jerseys (don't buy them since they'll be selling for $9.99 by spring at TJ Maxx), four vanity stores, $20 parking, warm beer, cold coffee, and Jock Jams buying you?
A LOSING FOOTBALL TEAM! LOSERS!
Oh, more DC United, please.
Posted by: King Tuchas | October 19, 2006 07:25 PM
Sherman, don't provoke the masses.

The DC United coverage is a must! Don't stop!
Posted by: Katey14 | October 19, 2006 08:16 PM
Keep it up, I need my United coverage. We ought to buy that security guard a ticket or two (and a few beers) - the game is alot more fun if your watching the game and not back-towards the field :)
Posted by: Zman | October 19, 2006 08:33 PM
Everybody loves the United coverage. All my friends mention it whenever we talk about the Bog. Keep the United coverage.
Posted by: Kinney | October 19, 2006 08:54 PM
I'd like there to be more Caps coverage, but overall, I think you do a great job. For the most part, keep up what you're doing, it's entertaining as hell!
Posted by: Bean | October 19, 2006 10:33 PM
Don't keep it mainstream. Don't let those gridiron types keep you down. United y Caps. You'll do the town a favor by providing us one fewer needless Redskins commentary.

More Freddy Adu!!!!!

Having only just stumbled upon this blog recently, I can say that it is a refreshing blast of air.
Tired of reading yet another story about the overpaid 'Skins or their maniacal owner? How about the "feel good" story of a mortgage banker/safe hands kind of guy.
Seems pretty simple stuff, really.
Keep up the United coverage and the wacky antics of their players.

UNITED UNITED UNITED UNITED UNITED UNITED UNITED UNITED UNITED UNITED UNITED... UNITED. I love the coverage, you give great a great aspect of the team that no one else covers. I mean sure I'd like to hear about the skins too, but like I don't enough already, and that security guard... well let's just say the Caps seem to be clinging on to whatever fans they can right now.
Posted by: Chris | October 20, 2006 02:04 AM
Are you kidding me? There's basketball and football coverage all over the place! Soccer is one thing that deserves a lot more respect, and your column brings this country just one step closer to sanity.
P.S. I'm sure Antwon Jamison and Clinton Portis curse up a storm as well. Esky just does it better.
P.P.S. I guess the Caps could use a bit more coverage. They suck (with the exception of this last game and their scoring bonanza), but they're still interesting.
Posted by: Confused... | October 20, 2006 06:57 AM
Faceball gets too much Post space as it is.
And Sweatball is no better. United and Gorillas on Skates is the way to go.
Esky, Josh, Bozilla and the boys, now that's bog feed.
VAMOS United

Definitely more D.C. United Dan! Four titles in ten years, enough said. There's a reason why that guy is a security guard. When was the last time that pointy ball team with the short owner won anything?
Tip for the SE bus ride: Don't sit in the seat next to the toilet. Have fun and make sure to sit in the Screaming Eagles section on Sunday the 29th at RFK.
Posted by: Rack United! | October 20, 2006 08:10 AM
Excuse my prior comment. I meant STAND in the Screaming Eagle section as no one sits. Pardon my faux pas.

Security Guards have it in for DC United and its fans, cause they're the only fans who get actively involved in the game

More Mason!
A sports-specific focus is lame and has been done a million times before. Focus on the personalities who make for good posts. If they all play for the Mystics, so be it. This town needs sports heroes, and learning just how crazy and funny these lunatics are only makes us love them more.
Posted by: bryc3 | October 20, 2006 09:22 AM
more united coverage please! thanks for the great work. vamos united!
Posted by: bjs | October 20, 2006 09:52 AM
As long as Portis isn't dressing up in funny costumes, Gilbert and these guys on the United are the only ones interesting to read about. And the Wizards have their own blog devoted to how quirky Arenas is or what his nickname should be, so keep up the United coverage!

by all means, do what you enjoy. My team is United. You don't need to denegrate any other sport or team to get to the stories that interest you, and you don't now! (Unlike a certain other unnamed blogger whose initials are Marc Fisher.)
I enjoy your stuff because you so obviously enjoy doing it. Can't wait to hear the report from Hoffa Park.
Be safe, and watch out for the empties on the ride home.
Posted by: fisherst | October 20, 2006 11:11 AM
i personally vote for the wizards, but can understand that the united and caps need some more coverage.
whatever it is, no skins! these guys get so much attention in this town, and there is plenty of other great sports.
love the personal inside stuff though, no matter what sport.
Posted by: g | October 20, 2006 12:04 PM
Write about whatever entertains you because that entertains us also.
That being said, I only read for the coverage of DC United and would prefer more coverage of them.
Thanks for the coverage you already give. You're doing great work.
