What You Need to Know, in Fewer Than 300 Words

Link of the day: Heath Shuler talks to his biggest critic, ShopShuler.com, and promises to reverse the Skins curse. Other link of the day: Gil driving himself to play in the Barry Farms league. (Video of the action here.) (Part I of Mike Wise's Gilbert opus, which deals with Gil's serious childhood stuff, should also be read.)

After DCU's harrowing series win, Ben Olsen calls a teammate "Uncle Gomez" and Peter Nowak says NE should be favored next week. Soriano files for free agency, and the Nats make headway in the Richmond radio market.

A columnist says the Terps are likely destined for Charlotte's bowl, but QB Sam Hollenbach's knee might not be right, and Ralph Friedgen criticizes an assistant. Elsewhere, if UVA hadn't blown that massive lead to the Terps, they'd be tied for the division lead, and a Cavs LB gets engaged.

A columnist says limited access to Ovechkin (and the Caps) shortchanges fans, and Canadians are similarly irritated, maybe because Ovie plays "like a Canadian," while a former teammate hints that Ovie sort of coasts in practice. The Wiz take care of some minor injuries, and Roger Mason will almost definitely be on the final roster (announced today).

And there are dozens of long Red Auerbach profiles. Bill Simmons calls Red "a cross between the Celtics leprechaun, Yoda and God;" Bob Ryan writes about the Auerbach chutzpah, John Feinstein tells of Red insulting David Stern's, um, masculinity; and here's a book excerpt on the origins of the China Doll gang.

It would be fitting to hold Red's memorial on Tuesday morning...say around 11?

Wow. Jeff Freisen calling Ovechkin on not showing up at practices? How about the fans calling out Freisen for not showing up last year?

Woodmont's locker room will never be the same

Never, ever link to a Bill Simmons column again.

That Arenas story is a great read - thanks Dan. This is why I come to your blog everyday so I don't have to look around and find good articles for myself (well for that and to read about tossing objects off of RFK).
