World's Best Hockey Player Eats Skittles at Wiz Game
So I'm sitting in my behind-the-backboard media seats at the Wiz exhibition game last night, and naturally I'm sort of not paying attention to the game. (I mean, if NBA regular season games don't really mean anything, what exactly do preseason games mean? Can a game mean less than nothing?)
So I'm sitting there, and I'm looking around, and I see a man in a bright pink t-shirt that says "Love Metal," which is pretty noteworthy in itself, and he's next to a woman with a very loud red and black outfit and very blond hair, and I'm like, ok, that's Alex Ovechkin, sitting 20 rows back in a corner section of a Wizards exhibition game, completely anonymous. He was eating Skittles. (The Wizards PR people later told me that they would have gotten him better seats, but he never asked.)
There were multiple public displays of affection between AO and his GF. His dad was also there; when the "Bubble Vision" came on the jumbotron, in which fans' faces are distorted and everyone laughs, his dad stuck out his tongue and put his hands by his ears, apparently in an effort to make it onto the Bubble Vision. He didn't make it.
I watched this for a good while. I saw two young guys a few rows away pointing, but that was it. No autographs, no photos, no nothing. Just a family, hanging out and watching Rasho Nesterovic face off against Brendan Haywood. You gotta hope he retains that anonymity for a little while longer, although it seems hopeless. Thanks largely to people like me.
Anyhow, when they left at halftime, I went up and talked to the people who were sitting behind them.
"Really, it was?" said Will Hawkins when I told him about Ovie. "I would never, ever in a million years have guessed that that was a professional hockey player. I just thought he was some random rich guy."
"They seemed like a very nice couple," Cassie Bottge said.
"They didn't even touch their nachos," pointed out Marc Peters, and it was true, although upon seeing that congealed florescent tub of cheese I didn't blame them.
Then I was alerted to the fact that Brian Sutherby, Steve Eminger and Brooks Laich were sitting courtside at the game. Like, first row. (Personally, I was equally excited to see occasional Bog contributor Unsilent Majority from Kissing Suzy Kolber at the game, which says something about bloggers, I guess.)
Anyhow, I went up and briefly chatted with Sutherby, asking for help with the suggested Russian Alex nicknames. ("I'll leave that to you guys," he said, although he did point out that Eminger's nickname is "Jim." Still haven't figured that one out.) The Caps trio were there partly because they had the time off, and partly because Eminger and Laich are Raptors fans.
And then a television reporter came up and asked to interview the guys, and I was like, "Well, I guess everyone knows the Caps are here now," and so the television reporter talked to Laich for a while and then left. Later, I discussed the interview with the television reporter. And the television reporter was like, "what do you mean, the Caps were here?" And I was like, "But you were interviewing them???" And the television reporter was like, "I thought they were fans."
Yup, to the TV reporter, Laich was just "a fan at tonight's game named Brooks." Didn't even ask for his last name. I promised the TV reporter that his or her identity would not be revealed.
The three front-row Caps, who were all very stylishly dressed, left after the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, a source tells me, "Michael Ruffin took a sweaty header right into their seats." Could have been interesting.
