Hot Local Sporting Events

Two not-to-be missed upcoming events on the local sports calendar.

1) Next Tuesday night at the D.C. Improv, the Second Annual Funniest Sports Celebrity in Washington contest. I was asked to compete, but I said no way, so I'm a judge. Post columnist Mike Wise was asked to compete, but he didn't want me to struggle with a conflict-of-interest, so he's a judge, too. The other judges include Caps forward-turned-defenseman-turned-forward Ben Clymer, and Chip, the mascot from California Tortilla. The contestants thus far include sports talk radio person Scott Jackson, sports talk radio person Bram Weinstein, sports talk radio person Marc Sterne, defending comedy champion and D.C. Divas fullback Monica Livingston, NBC4 anchor Lindsay Czarniak and some guy I've never heard of named Peter Rosenberg. You could make a strong argument that, of all these people, only Ben Clymer counts as a legitimate D.C. sports celebrity (although there are rumors that someone from DCU might get involved), but the event is for charity, and Mike Wise will likely be highly entertaining.

(For example, well-placed sources tell me that Wise performed a killer karaoke rendition of "Livin' on a Prayer," his trademark tune, somewhere in Washington last night. If anyone has video, please share.)

2) Today through Sunday, we'll be treated to the first fully-rated scrabble tournament in D.C. since the national championships were held here in 1990, live at the Best Western Capitol Skyline in SW. I mean, we're talking about 15 of the top 100 rated players in the country!!!! The winner of the expert division gets $1,500. Plus, there's a bonus prize for the best word describing this week's mid-term elections. Plus, the stars of Stefan Fatsis's "Word Freak" will be there, as will Stefan Fatsis. (Read Stefan's latest Scrabble masterpiece here.) (And you can see the full entry list here.) This is the sort of red-hot action you can expect. Plus, this will be one of the first local tourneys to use the 2006 Official Word List, whose new additions include "BLOG." Also "PERV."

Action starts at noon today, and at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tailgaters welcome. Also smoke bombs, if the Barra Brava guys are bored this weekend.

I enjoyed Word Freak but I don't think I could sit through an actual tournament. Call me crazy but I'm going to see the Wiz this weekend.

Tuesday night is the one that's caught my eye. The chance to see Uncle Bram and Nigel Sterne make asses of themselves has me all atwitter.

What would the BOG do without our WiseBOG production?!

WGDC-stands strong behind Czarniak or Weinstein winning BIG on Tuesday night!!!

Let's hope Wise doesn't bust out Jesse's Girl there-ha!!!

I'll bring the smoke bombs if someone's got the keg.
