Ovechkin's iPod
The Wizards, Thrashers and Caps are all downtown as we type, and never let it be said that NBA and NHL guys don't have much in common. Brooks Laich, for instance, watched "Scarface" last night. Seriously. Ben Clymer, on the other hand, watched "Grey's Anatomy" and "The O.C." Despite the absence of Mischa Barton. "I think she just doesn't know she loves me yet," Clymer said.
Anyhow, I came down to here to write about actual hockey stuff, but I got distracted when I walked into the Caps dressing room and Justin Timberlake was serenading the team, quite loudly. Making the Caps the second D.C. pro sports team to listen to Justin Timberlake. I asked who was responsible for the music choice.
"If you hear any bad Russian dance music, it's Ovie," Matt Bradley said. "If not, it's Petty," as in, Matt Pettinger.
(Meanwhile, Caps dialogue:
Clymer [complaining]: My caller ID hasn't shown Sutherby all year.
Brian Sutherby [explaining]: He's not on my line any more.
Clymer: See, that's how you've changed.
Sutherby: Hey, some of us are moving up in this world.
Clymer: That's what happens when you get a letter on your shirt.
Laich: I don't rememer there being an 'A' in Sutherby.
Clymer: You had to think about that one, didn't you.
Eventually, Ovie's iPod was unhooked and a different iPod was plugged in. Steve Eminger took control and selected, I kid you not, Bryan Adams. Those wacky Canadians.
So naturally, I liberated Ovie's iPod and figured I'd record his playlist for posterity. But he has like 14,735 songs on there, so I gave up, and figured I'd just list the A artists. Even that took me like three hours to write down. So I just sat there in the dressing room, listening to Bryan Adams and staring at Ovie's iPod. Here's what I wrote down, which, you have to admit, is about as diverse a group of "A" artists as any athlete could possibly be expected to have:

i love this kid. nothing wrong with jtim bringing the sexy back to the locker room.
seriously, some choice artists there: art of noise (!), asian dub foundation (!!!), afrika (as in bambaataa!!!!) shox, aretha franklin (soul sister #1), and of course the softcore vanilla orgy that is ABBA.
as for the obligatory aerosmith power ballad, well, everyone has their guilty
besides, i bet brashear brings the pain with some real school hardcore and metal.

the locker room exchange is the best - please keep that up
it's great to see a side of sports that isn't necessarily breakdown of the play and what the team needs to improve on etc.

THAT is a great off-the-beaten-path post. I'm thinking I should be happy that I don't know who most of the "A" artists are. He's obviously too young for "Asia".
And the Clymber, Suts, Laich exchange is wonderful.
Too bad you won't be at the game tonight.
