Special Barra Beer of the Week, for Tailgating, and All That
Some people have asked me how I'll decide among the weekend's bounty of blogable events: from this evening's Miss Dallas Week pageant to tonight's Caps game to tomorrow's Wizards home opener to Sunday's United and Redskins games. The sad/happy truth is, various family obligations will probably make this a non-blog weekend for me. However, I hereby promise to bring a six-pack of this week's recommended tailgating beer, Dead Guy Ale, to the Barra on Sunday, to replace a few of their possessions I might have accidentally borrowed last weekend. (One of those possessions might have been called Hop-Ocalypse, which, if nothing else, has a great logo.) Anyhow, I never thought of this before resident beer expert Hoppy Jeff Wells sent me his piece on Dead Guy for last week's pre-Halloween beer recommendation and I forgot to post it and then needed to find a justification for posting it this week. But seriously, with all that skull imagery, Rogue is a natural for a Barra tailgate. I'm gonna push the Elders to make some sort of informal declaration about Dead Guy at some point. Maybe when I drop by on Sunday. Here's what Hoppy Jeff writes:
A "Rogue" is defined as a "vagrant, a tramp, a mischievous person," and the story of the Newport, Oregon brewery of the same name is not so far from that definition. Jack Joyce was a corporate lawyer and executive at Nike during the early '80s. After helping in the rapid growth of the fledgling company (he was one of the visionaries behind the Air Jordan ad campaign), Jack decided he had enough with the corporate world and decided to get into the gourmet food/beverage business. After meeting a brewer on an airplane (John Maier, who would eventually become Rogue's world-renowned brewmaster), Jack and two other partners decided to start a brewery.
Founded in 1988, Rogue Ales has become one of America's most creative and award-winning breweries. In addition to producing more than 40 styles of ales and lagers, the brewery also produces two distilled rums, owns and operates six pubs and restaurants, runs a B&B ("bed and beer"), and continues to win design and marketing awards. In fact, the brewery has even started a "Rogue Nation," whose members are given a passport, a citizenship card, a "Beer Manifesto" and a "Principles of the Rogue Revolution" speech guide.
Dead Guy Ale, the brewery's flagship beer, is the perfect brew for the [previously upcoming] Halloween occasion (or a Barra Brava tailgate). "Gratefully dedicated to the Rogue in each of us," Dead Guy is a German-style Maibock. Never in the habit of following any rules, Rogue uses its own "PacMan" ale yeast instead of a traditional lager yeast. The brewery describes the beer as "deep honey in color with a malty aroma, rich hearty flavor and a well balanced finish." To further intrigue customers who decided to celebrate the spooky holiday (or the spookier tailgate) with them, the brewery does a limited run of 22 oz. bottles of Dead Guy Ale that "Glow in the Dark."
(Ed. note: Maybe I'll try to find some cheese, too, so that that one romantic couple in the Barra stops yelling at me.)

I'll make a pre-tailgate declaration on the Dead Guy right now. It better chase down The Captain well or there's gonna be hell to pay.

Unfortunatly, one of the romantic couple is in Milwaukee, and the cheese cannot be accepted without her. Id be there, but thats just not right!
We will happily accept such cheese at the United season opener next year, though ;)

Dan, be sure to ask for Pints. He's our King of homebrewed beer. He'll let you know if that stuff is worthy. Ask for me (Dave Brother) too, I like cheese. :o)

We're gonna be 'charring', as you put it, more flesh at La Barra Brava's tailgate, so drop by the grills and share a little with the cooks, bitte. Thanks for helping spread the word about the passion we all feel for United and how much fun it is!
Last game at RFK this year for DCU, sigh.
