What You Need to Know, in a Bunch of Words

Lead story: Heath Shuler returns to D.C., while Stop Shuler hangs 'em up and other athletes mostly lose their races. Also, major Bog friend OffTheMeter launches his visit-all-337-Division I-Arenas challenge in Comcast tonight.

Etan gives a play-by-play of his fight with Brendan while Eddie Jordan says such fights happen "all over the league," and the Pacers could be without Maryland's Sarunas Jasikevicius tonight after a luggage injury. Also, Canada puts Ovechkin on SportsCentre promos, and he's ahead of last year's scoring pace.

While teammates say Bog fave Adam Archuleta's confidence is broken, the somber video pitchman says his contract was a distraction and the criticism will "make me a better player," which would be nice. Incidentally, the WashTimes predicts a 6-10 finish.

Maryland basketball looks more-than-respectable against Hampton (which wasn't embarrassed), setting up tonight's matchup with Mike Lonergan and plucky Vermont, as D.J. Strawberry predicts "something special" for the Terps this season. Bog friend Rick Maese points out that Gary Williams has less official job security than any ACC coach, and a recruiting analyst says "Georgetown owns D.C." Va. Tech cuts out the taunting, Terpish kickers Dan Ennis and Nick Novak hang out, and this week's opponent (Miami) suffers an actual sports tragedy as a DT is killed.

The Nats--who apparently reached out to Bobby Valentine during their managerial search--hire 10 new scouts, including a failed Tampa Bay GM and "some of the brightest minds in baseball." Manny Acta campaigns for the job, axed color man Tom Paciorek says he must have rubbed Stan Kasten the wrong way and Buck Martinez could be his replacement. The O's are still interested in Soriano, and Nick Johnson has surgery. Also, the Phillies are expected to be a major player for Soriano, who doesn't want to leave the East Coast and is beloved by new Phillies [first base coach] Davey Lopes.

And more people copy our basketball experiments as LeBron James says the new ball is "just not good."

This just in: MLS Goalkeeper of the year Troy Perkins (who I happened to run into in the pasta aisle of the Reston Safeway yesterday) thinks LeBron also doesn't know what he's talking about.

I'm glad to read the Georgetown is back in recruiting the best local talent. If you've got your foot in the door to the WCAC, you're golden. Here's to the Hoyas staying on top for a long time. Now if we could just get Gary Williams to quit ducking us. :-)

So much great talent in local high school basketball is getting shipped out of town. If Gary wants to stay competitive with Georgetown he needs to do a better job with guys like Linas Kleiza, Kevin Durant, Keith Bogans, Joe Forte, and Roger Mason jr.

True Unsilent. As a DeMatha grad - it is stunning to me to see the Hoyas getting commitments from top Stags. Big John never even considered going anywhere near DeMatha - and Gary's always had a few. I never knew the real reason why, but it is surprising that JTIII, Gonzaga grad and all, is making this happen. P.S. Freeman is a better player than both Bogans and Forte were in high school. Hoyas fans should be very excited about that.

Well from a Stag grad that's some high praise indeed. I haven't seen Freeman play so I'll reserve judgement until I see him (probably vs. Good Counsel).

But is he better than my boy (and future U of A star) Jerryd "Not Skip" Bayless?

Posted by: Unsilent Majority | November 8, 2006 11:21 AM

I just realized that DeMatha is playing on ESPNU twice this season...now I just need ESPNU.

They'd still be better with Mike Hibbs.

Posted by: Unsilent Majority | November 8, 2006 11:22 AM

Not to criticize Hibbs, because I don't know him as well, but Mike Jones is doing a very good job, and he seems to be making a long-term commitment to the school, which I like. Not to say that Hibbs wouldn't have done just as well. Plus Jones took good care of my brother. Where does your boy Bayless play?

Posted by: tmc | November 8, 2006 11:53 AM

He's from Phoenix. I haven't checked the shooting guard rankings but I know he's top five in the class.

Mike Jones is doing an excellent job, I just wish it could have worked out better for Hibbs. However I'm sure he'll do well at Good Counsel.

Before Georgetown fans gripe about Gary ducking them, why don't the Hoyas stop ducking GWU?

Posted by: Vincent | November 8, 2006 12:03 PM

speaking of DeMatha, Brian Westbrook is on the Brian Mitchell show...bastard.

Posted by: Unsilent Majority | November 8, 2006 12:54 PM

Shouldn't DeMatha be on ESPNHS? or ESPNPS?

And I think ESPNU is now widely available in 73 homes across the country.

Just so you know...Davy Lopes is not the skipper (manager) of the Philles, Charlie Manuel is. Lopes has been hired as a coach, although he may end up as manager if the Philles don't start well next year and decide to fire Manuel.

Oh Vincent, that comment fromt he Hoya fan was a joke aimed at the stupidity of Maryland and GW fans for whining about Georgetown ducking them. Face it, we just don't care.

Dan, you got another mention in Ted's blog.
