Gil: Not Chewing Straws

I just got an e-mail from Reader Rafael, who wondered whether he saw Gil chewing straws during last night's game.

No, Rafael, they were not straws. Remember, Gil got one of his front teeth all knocked out against the Celtics and missed practice on Monday to deal with it.

"We have a great dental plan," Arenas said after the game, according to Hoops World.

I figured we'd read more about this in today's papers, but I didn't see it. Understandably, people were more concerned with Antawn Jamison's knee. (Wash Times says he's out "two to eight weeks," which isn't the most specific of all estimates but isn't that great, regardless. Official Beat Writer Ivan Carter says he's out at least through Saturday. BulletsForever says this isn't that big of a deal.)

Anyhow, at least Matt Watson mentioned the tooth over at FanHouse, because Gilbert's dental behavior yesterday was quite noteworthy. He was wearing a mouthguard to protect the temporary tooth (he called it a veneer), but he let the mouthguard thing dangle out of his mouth throughout 90 percent of the game. He would be out there, bringing the ball up the court, plastic splayed out of his mouth, chomping up and down. Very strange. Maybe you television watchers have more stories?

"It felt funny," Gil said after the game. "You know, I'm not used to it. Sometimes I've got to speak, sometimes I've got to breathe. So I was just gasping for air a little bit. It's in my mouth when I'm driving. When I'm in the open court, I'm going to chew on it."

"Yeah, I noticed it," Jarvis Hayes said. "He's got to call the plays. It's pretty hard to talk with a mouthpiece in your mouth."

Gil said he'll get a permanent tooth installed on Friday. I asked whether he saved the old tooth, the one that fell out.

"There's no tooth fairy," he said. "I'm not gonna get money for that."
